Title: Joseph PATTERSON
Post by: Marla on Thursday 21 January 10 10:56 GMT (UK)
I am working on ancestry again after a long time away from it.  I am interested in Joseph Patterson.  All I know is that he was a Catholic from Ireland and that he was born on March 15, 1793.  His wife's name was Roseann Tewell.  Any suggestions on how to proceed?

I am also searching the surname, RIGGINS, but do not know what part of the UK to search.

I am sure the name is very common, but I don't think he ended up in Iowa.  He is buried at St. Rose Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant, in Martin County, Indiana.  He had a son, James S. Patterson, born Oct. 9, 1832 and a grandaughter, Catherine Theresa (Katie) Patterson, who was my great grandmother.

I know so little about him but I  am not aware of him being in Iowa.  :-\

Since his birth, and marriage if he married in Ireland, are before civil registration, you will need to research church records to find out anything about Joseph. To do this you will need to know what parish he was born in to check if any records have survived.

Some parish details are available on the IrishGenealogy website (free) at : http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/  This site only includes some Dublin and Kerry records at the moment.

Other pay-sites are available which cover different counties and areas - e.g. IFHF, Emerald ancestors etc

Thank you, Shane.  I appreciate all the help I can get!  I understand a lot of parish records were destroyed, but the hunt is on. . . This is a hobby that takes a lot of patience.  It only pays off in tiny tidbits at a time, but the tidbits are tremendous!

I appreciate your help!
