Title: Researching the surname CORINGO - COMPLETED WITH THANKS
Post by: ashe on Wednesday 20 January 10 22:30 GMT (UK)
Hi All

Require help in breaking down my brick wall....

My request is to search for the unusual surname CORINGO, with any Christian name through out Australian BDM records.

The surname CORINGO cannot be found on SA records. I have tried Qld, NSW, Vic online indexes to no avail, but maybe I have missed the name???  Also have tried the surname with a K.

Know this is a tall order, but many eyes are better than one.

Would appreciate anyone's help.

There are no Coringo names on the early Electoral Rolls in NSW, Queensland, Victoria or Western Australia.

There are just three Coringleys and two Corringtons.

Hi Dee, Wivenhoe, Jamjar and Judith

Wow the brick wall has come tumbling down very quickly ;D ;D ;D

Quickly perusing the info have no doubt that this is the correct family with all the different spellings of the name, and will need time to digest everything.

Wivenhoe, that familytree site bears out with Dee's research - documented is Clara's marriage to Masterman, and father's name Simon Coringo.

Jamjar, the inquest info is most interesting. Will follow up.

Judith, the death notice for Margaret Cornigo - feel it is important and connected with Dee's research and family history, as below.

Dee, so much info  :o - most grateful. At this stage the info that stands out is

Frances HALL aged 81 died at CFIELD in 1940
Father = Simon CORNIGO &  Mother = Margt  LATIMER
Ref = 8178

and

Percival Lathmer NEWMAN born 30th October 1880 at Kooringa.
Father = Charles NEWMAN & Mother = Mary Jane CORNIGO
Ref = Bur 250/385

Percival Howard Latimer was my grandfather. On his marriage cert Broken Hill 1907, it is documented that he was born in Melrose SA, father=John Henry Latimer, mother=Mary Jane Coringo. Researched the JH Latimer side back to England and with dates etc. came to the conclusion that Percival was the result of a liaision  ???

The Newman name is puzzling but could be correct as JH Latimer did not arrive in Australia till June 1880. On Percival's death cert (Vic 1946) the informant is not a family member and any details are not known.

Need time-out as the mind is in overdrive and get the info prioritised.....any clarification of what I've said will be most grateful.

Hugs to you all
Ashe

Ashe, I'm sure this is the info you needed to break down your brick wall and that the name has just been spelt of transcribed in different ways.  And yes, death certificates are not necessarily totally accurate, but with what you have from that and what we have here, I'm really happy for you.

Here's a bit more......Frances Rose's children......

To Frances Rose Harriet CORNIGO & William James HALL……

Minnie Ethelene HALL born 9th February 1883 at Kent Town
Ref =  Nor  298/68

Marion Frances HALL born 9th December 1880 at Norwood.
Ref = Ade  251/227

Ref = Nor  325/118

Albert Edward HALL born  10th November 1885 at Norwood.

Hi Dee

I certainly agree that the info was needed and am jumping over the moon.

From Percival's age stated on his marriage cert it put him born abt 1881-82 not 1880 (it happens), but one wonders why he would state that John Henry Latimer was his father - will probably never know.

Also his name on your finding his birth details Percival Lathmer (mispelt for Latimer?)Newman poses more questions; where is Howard his second name, and why is Latimer there? Am not sure that SA birth records will give me any further details of Percival than you have already given me?

Is it possible for some more lookups please, as follows:

A possible marriage of Mary Jane to Newman before her marriage to Ramage.
The death of Margaret McLean/McGlynn.
A second marriage of Simon to Margaret Latimer

And does it mean that the family name is not Latimer but Newman instead   ::)
Oh for DNA testing  ;D

Many thanks
Ashe

Here's Margaret Cornigo's death.....

Margaret CORNIGO aged 75 of Kent Town,  and widow of Symon CORNIGO, died 13th April 1907 at Kent Town.
Ref = Nor 324/ 413

The notice that Judith found in the newspaper said  that she died at her daughter's home in Kent Town. That would have been Frances Rose Harriet Hall, so I think there was just the one Margaret, not two.

No births in South Australia to a Margaret LATIMER.

I can see 4 births to a John Henry LATIMER but with an Ida Ord TURNER in the 1880s…all up north at Gladstone or Booyoolie.

Between 1846 and 1899 there are 27 births to a Charles NEWMAN (with no second given name) out of 309 NEWMAN births. There are 7 mothers of these children.

There was a Benjamin NEWMAN having children at Kooringa at that time…..wonder if he and Charles were brothers…..

Now here’s a thought…..could  Percival Latimer have been fostered or adopted by John Henry LATIMER if he was an illegitimate child born to a very young Mary Jane? Maybe her Ramage husband wouldn't have him?

Dee
Title: Re: Researching the surname CORINGO

Not sure if there was only one Margaret, as the list posted of Mary Jane, Frances etc. the mother was Margaret McLean/McGlynn. On Simon's BISA - Married  Mgt  who was born 3rd September 1831 IRL. Sounds correct, but with Frances Hall death notice the mother was Margaret Latimer - where did the Latimer come from?

Researched JH Latimer family with Ida Turner at Gladstone. It took me back to Newcastle-on-Tyne England where both originated from. They were married there Jun quarter 1879. Good thought Dee re Percival being fostered/adopted.....had obtained JHL's will in the hope of finding some mention of Percival but there was nothing.

Ashe,

To answer your PM request for more information, and so that other Rootschatters can continue to follow the thread, here’s what I found……

Simon CORNEJO aged 31 married Margaret MACGLINN aged 26 on 25th September 1858 at St Mary Church, Kooringa.
Fathers = Jose CORNEJO & John MACGLINN
Ref =  Bur 35/5

So yet another spelling of the name.

Here’s the death of their baby son Henry that I missed…..

Henry White CORNEGO aged 3 days of  Worlds End died on 5th February 1866 at Worlds End.
Father = Simon CORNEGO
Ref = Bur 22/351

The death of Mary Jane CORNIGO who married Robert RAMAGE……
She died aged 84 as a resident of Parkside on 7th May 1946 at Parkside.
Husband Robert listed as deceased.
Ref =  Ade 700/2149

Robert died 15 years earlier.
He was aged 68 and resident of Dulwich when he died on 24th July 1931 at Dulwich.
Ref = Nor  530/285

Hope that helps.    :)

Sure does.....it has filled in the gaps and given me another generation to research....later. ;D

Now to find if Percival stayed with his mum Mary-Jane or was reared elsewhere......and where does the Latimer name fit in. A trip to SA definately on the agenda.

You said that you had been to the Princess Royal station, was that a sheep station and in what area?

Many thanks

Ashe, the Pricess Royal Station was sheep I think, and is out from Burra.
Have a look at
http://www.burracreekwines.com.au/about.php?id=286

As for the Latimer mentioned on the HALLdeath certificate, remember that information on death certificates is not necessarily accurate. In fact, it can often be totally wrong, as the informant may not really know the correct information.

An example.....death certificate of my gg-grandfather BUTTON had him being born in Birminham, England. In fact, he was born in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire.

Ashe, I've just found something rather interesting, though it doesn't directly connect to your Cornego family.

The National Archives of Australia website has no mention of Cornego/Cornigo.

BUT....there are 21 entries for people with the name Cornejo, and most of them are from South American countries.

I thought this was worth mentioning, as BISA has Simon coming from Chile, and his marriage record giving his name as CORNEJO.

Hi Dee, Wivenhoe, Jamjar and Judith

Before I complete this thread here is a quick update as follows:

Have been in contact with descendents from two of Mary Jane’s sisters, Frances and Louisa, and awaiting a reply from descendents of Isabel.

Dee...the lead from the NAA; all those Cornejo’s arriving here were in the 20th century. Have requested a search for the 19th century.

Contacted the NLA to see what information they had on the SA Spanish Muleteers in the 1850’s. They sent me a couple of newspapers articles, plus the titles of a couple of publications re the copper mines in the Burra area. (have learnt so much of SA history)

Have found one of the ships that transported 200 mules and 14 Chillian natives, the “Malacca” in 1855, plus a photo of the Portuguese Galleon. There was another ship in 1856 with 22 Chillian natives.

Re Margaret McGlinn, a family story is that she landed in SA after the ship was wrecked off the SA coast.

I will complete this thread now and if I decide to research the Ramage’s and Newman’s will make new threads.

Many thanks for all your contributions, especially you Dee..... in helping find my family.

Many thanks for the update, Ashe. It's lovely to hear what has happened as a result of help given on RC , and also to know more of the story. The story of the Chilean muleteers is  a new one to me, and as you say....we learn more all the time through family history.

Great that you've now made family contacts!

Good luck with your continuing research.

The grave site of Simon Carnigo. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/201619557
Because you needed another spelling for his name.  :)
From the family relationships on the headstone there is no doubt that it is him. The headstone is clearly not contemporaneous with his death. It looks as if someone was compiling family information in the second half of the 20th century... or later if it's you yourself.
