Title: Easington Lane
Post by: peterbmillzz on Monday 18 January 10 20:15 GMT (UK)
Hi all
can anyone get me a photo of my Grand fathers grave.  He died in 1932 and will be burried in the lane cemetery.  His name is Patrick Riley 1891-1932, he was Roman Catholic if that helps.

Thanks in advance.
Cheers
Peter

Today I had a wander round Easington Lane cemetery as you requested.  It's not a big place at all - perhaps 30 minutes to get round the lot.
However, I didn't see Patrick's grave.

Although there were several old gravestones, the vast majority are post WWII, so I wonder if there'd been an earlier cemetery in another location.

A few headstones had been tipped on to their face, so clearly I couldn't check these ones.

Frank I thank you very much, given how cold it is here in Berkshire it must be Freezing up there.
I have not been to the Lane since I was about 10 years old (50 yrs ago.......my how time flies) so my memory or knowledge of another Graveyard is, well, non existant.  I have a map of the Lane dated 1896 and it shows the cemetery as being in Murton Lane?
A question though, are there any graves at St Micheals RC Church?
Thanks again Frank

(Just checking my A-Z) - yes it's in Murton Lane, Peter.

I've no idea whether or not there are graves at St Michaels (Houghton, I presume) - I'll check that one out.  Give me a few days...

Actually the weather hasn't been too bad today. It's turning cold now though  :(

Hi, ST Michaels church is in Easinton Lane, a different place to St Michaels church in Houghton (2 miles apart). There are only a few headstones left at the front of Easington Lane church, so if your relative is buried here and has a headstone he will be buried in Murton Lane for sure   :)

He was born 1891 in Brandon and Died in Hougton Le Spring (RD) in 1932.  As I said he was Roman Catholic, not sure if that will make a difference.
Thanks again
Peter

do you have a street address as houghton covers quite a large area, he could also be in Hetton cemetery or Houghton or Easington Lane, or Newbottle or even Herrington

Lilywhite Terrace and High street all still exist today and are in Easington Lane, so hopefully he was still there when he died. I will look at the buried records for Easington Lane 1st. I go to the records office on the 3rd March so I will be in contact then. If i find a match in the records I will go to the cemetery and hopefully get a photo if there is a headstone, I live in Hetton so its not far

Thanks for your time.  I am sure you have your own stuff to do so please don't spend an age on this.
Thanks again.
I assume you are doing your own history in that area or is it that you live nearby?

I was last in "the Lane " about 45 to 50 years ago.  If only I had asked these questions then.  But as a 10 year old Boy it all meant nothing to me.  Perhaps at that time Robinsons Buildings would still be there, ( he lived there in 1911). Certainly I know Gargles Farm was as it was only demolished a few years ago.  This is where my GMother was a servant.

I am doing my own tree and need to go there sometime anyway to look for a grave for myself. I live 2 minutes away. Yes Gargles Farm was demolished and has a small housing estate built there

Using the updated search on Sunderland's BMD it appears Patrick died 30/5/1932 so this will cut the time frame down looking for his burial.

Peter,

I went to School (RC) with Rileys who still lived either in or within a couple of doors of 46 High Street, EL. They were still there until at least the late eighties when I moved away and lost contact. Very strong family resemblence to the photograph.

Hi, I went to Easington Lane graveyard yesterday and cannot find a headstone. So i will look at the buried records in March at Durham to double check he is there. They also  have lists of who had a headstone and who doesn't and sometimes it tells you roughly where it should  be, but not always.  I did notice some fallen stones so it maybe he did have one but it has since been removed.

The burial record of the church where he was buried from will include the burial ground. St Michael's RC, Houghton-le-Spring has a churchyard and I would be looking at these church burial records first.

Good luck,

Hi Parrot Lady,

I came across your emails re: Resident in Easington Lane.
I was born there in 1953 and lived there until I moved on to pastures new in 1976.
I am interested in finding out my family tree and how my parents came to live there, mining I presume.

But my point is, is Durham Records Office the best place to go to begin my Family Tree search for old Easington Lane residents and can I access their archives on the internet?

Hope you can help,

Cheers

Hi Trev
you can get some info here.................
http://nd.durham.gov.uk/gro/newgro.nsf/search?open&C0326955070407042009
And as you know the best place to start is Census Records.

Hi Trev,
You can obviously get info from the census, but I go to the records office regularly ( you need to book at least 2 weeks in advance). There you can view the christening records which give you the parents names and quite often the birth date is written at the side. You can view the marriage certificates providing you know the church they were married in , that also applies to christenings. You can print out the marriage certificates for 50p each. You can view the buriel records which tells you when they were buried and their last address and age when they died. Some parishes have grave indexes so you can look to see if they had a headstone and roughly where in the churchyard it was .  I had a relative who was in Winterton asylum for years in the 1890's and you can view his health records and why he was in there in the 1st place. If you're really into family history you have to go!!!!!

Also worth a look

But as Marie says, start with Census info from what you know already.

Sorry but this is the answer you didn't want to hear.  Patrick Riley is not buried in Easington Lane Cemetery or South Hetton or Hetton le Hole or Houghton le Spring. They are all the obvious ones I thought he could be in if he wasn't in the Easington Lane one . I'm guessing he must have moved before he died.
