Is anyone able to view the New York Passenger Lists to see if there is a listing for a Percy William Brooks, born Chard, Somerset in 1874 please?
-
I don't see Percy William Brooks with that exact birthdate, but there are quite a few William Brooks, born c1874 (I'm not taking the time to search each record for a place of birth). Do you have an approximate time that he arrived in New York, please?

Hi Lisa,
No I'm afraid I don't have an exact date. Its a bit of a long shot really. Ancestry came up with a hint which suggested the NY Passenger Lists but my membership doesn't allow me to view. I have Percy William on an 1891 census in the UK, but then no trace. I do know the family was split up when the mother died, so I may be completely wrong to chase this hint. Please don't go to any time or trouble if its not obvious, but thank you very much for getting in touch.
Best regards,
Anne

Hi Anne: No trouble; I was hoping to narrow the search. Did family members have a common occupation, please? It might help identify him. Will have a look for him now.

I'm not finding Percy William sailing to the States. There is the possibility that he sailed to Canada and then entered the States. I cannot view Canadian passenger lists.
There are border crossings from Canada to the States for William Brooks in 1913 and 1916 with his family. William was born in Somerset in 1874. However, he states his mother's name was Sarah, not Rosanna. He also has "J" as a middle initial in 1916.
There is still a chance that he sailed and I didn't find it.

Thanks for trying Lisa, but I fear this long shot is a bit too long!
If I manage to unearth anything more relevant I will get back to you.
Best regards
Anne
