Title: William GABBITAS baptism, c.1754
Post by: Alexander. on Monday 18 January 10 02:46 GMT (UK)
Hi, I am looking for a baptism for William GABBITAS, who married Elizabeth CHAPPELL in 1787 in Newark. He lived to a ripe old age, appearing on the 1841 census in Southwell, and dying there in 1845 (age 91), though he was buried back at Newark.

This info gives him a birth date of abt 1754. I see from the IGI that there is a possible one in Walesby in that year, but that seems unlikely because there was already a large Gabbitas clan at Newark by that time. However, I can't find a Newark baptism for William.

Thanks,
Alexander

Hi Alexander
I too have William Gabbitas among my ancestors and he is the earliest that I have of that clan. I haven't done much on that side of the family lately.
I don't know whether I should mention the name here but there are 7-8 entries for William Gabbitas born around 1754 on Genes Reunited. 6-7 are for the one born in Walesby but there is one born 1756 with birthplace Newark. I haven't made contact with any of these so far.

Thanks Annie for checking.

Eric, I haven't checked Genes Reunited, but I don't subscribe to that - however I do have an incomplete tree on there. Which of William's children are you descended from? His son William (b. 1789) is my ancestor.

Thanks,
Alexander

The link is a long way back, and involves several female relatives.
I am descended from the daughter Elizabeth who married George Waller in 1812. Their grandaughter Eliza Waller married Jim Whitehead, who was my mother's grandfather. At that time they were in Eccleshall Bierlow but moved to Beeston. My grandmother was born in Eccleshall Bierlow but baptised in Beeston!

Hi Eric,

I just noticed that William Gabbitas (b.1789) had a son called George Waller GABBITAS (b. 1831) via his second marriage to Prothasa Wilkinson Goodwin. This child must have been named after his brother-in-law, which seems a bit strange...the families must have been close or something.

Interestingly my grandma's grandmother was a Gabbitas, and my grandma's family ended up in Beeston, where she was born and baptised. Maybe that was just where Gabbitas descendants liked to go!  ;D

Could it be that William's mother was a Waller and that is why George has the Waller given name.

That is a possibility, the Gabbitas and Waller families could be related further back as well.

Hi Alexander,

A little late catching up with this thread.

My great x5 grandmother was Elizabeth Gabbitas (6 Aug 1760 - 13 Mar 1832) who married John Hooton.    Is she any relation to your William Gabbitas ?

Hi,

Sorry for my delay in replying.

Where was your Elizabeth Gabbitas born?

If she was born at Newark then she was no doubt some relation of my William Gabbitas. However seeing as I haven't been able to find a baptism for William yet, we can't know for sure.

Who were Elizabeth's parents?

Hi Alexander,

Maybe not the same Elizabeth Gabbitas, as mine was born in East Drayton, father Thomas Gabbitas and mother Mary Robinson.   There were a number of Gabbitas families in Nottinghamshire at the time.

Is your William among these ?   www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=/eng/search/ancestorsearchresults.asp

Or is this him ?    www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/SearchResults.pl?RecordType=Baptisms&RecordID=4098841

Good hunting
