Title: Census Look Up - James Paterson, MacOrriston Farm, nr Thornhill
Post by: Jerzy on Sunday 17 January 10 16:52 GMT (UK)
I'm trying to find out information on a James Paterson who appears to be listed at MacOrriston Farm near Thornhill in 1891.  I have tried to do a 1901 census search but I am not sure which district Thornhill comes under when searching on Scotlands People and searching 'all' brings back quite a few!  Although he may not be part of my family line, I believe he may have brought up my grandfather from the age of 5 and if I can get some census info on him or the farm it may help to get me over the brick wall I have hit at this point.  Fingers crossed!

Hi Jerzy
A quick reply. When I was a child, land north of the river Forth from our farm on the Stirlingshire and therefore south side, was regarded as Perthshire. Thornhill is in Stirling Council's administrative area but I'm almost sure you'll find it under Perthshire 100 years ago.

I also found a document by searching Macorriston farm. It described an axe head in the collection of Smith art gallery and Museum in Stirling, found by George Paterson of Macorriston Farm in 1902.

Good luck

Mary

Mary, thanks for your info it was very helpful and you were right - I found Macorrston under Perthshire.  I now know who lived at the farm around the time I'm interested in - I just need to find how, if they are connected to my tree or not.

Kincardine parish ... was owned by Stewarts of Ardvorlich at one point. I have McFarlanes there.
