Hello everybody
Is there someone out there who can help me with my research on William Boyd and Janet (Jane) Hepburn.
What I have is Janet was born in Cambusnethan in 1815 daughter of James Hepburn and her mother Margaret Douglas.
Janet married William Boyd. I do not have any information on him at all. All I know he is my Great great grandfather. Janet died at no. 9 Hope Street Newmains on 27th March 1868.
I would love more info of her husband William :-* :-*
-
Hello fancy nancy,
James Hepburn and Margaret Douglas were my GGGG Grand-parents through their daughter Margaret Hepburn (born 22 Oct 1813 Cambusnethan, married to Thomas Smith, died 03 Mar 1893 Whitestripe, Newmains). Sorry, I don't have any info on Janet and William Boyd. The only other info I have on James and Margaret is that he was a Coal Miner. Do you have anything on their births, marriage or deaths, or their ancestors?
Canisp.
Edit - Just found James Hepburn and Margaret Douglas married on 29 Oct 1808 Cambusnethan, and had 6 daughters - Catharine 1809, Jean 1811, Margaret 1813, Janet 1815, Helen 1817 and Mary 1820. Any other children?
-
Thanks Canisp
I do have all their Daughters names I also have the date of Catherine's death as 1851'
William Boyd is my G.G.Grandfather, he and Janet had a Son called Archibald
so it's the Boyd family that I am very interested in.
So if you or anybody else can help me I would be very happy
Thanks again
Nancy

Since William is still alive at the time of Janet's death in 1868 I looked for him on the 1871 census...and here is the household at 14 Brow Street, in Cambusnethen as indexed on Ancestry
William Boyd, age 52, b. Cumbernauld, occ: Furnance Keeper
Maria Bay Boyd, age 37, wife
Archabald Boyd, age 13, son
Jane Boyd, age 1, dau.
William Boyd, age17, son
which indicates that William had married again and had a child since 1868. A search on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for Mar* anything and William Boyd marriage turns up 7 possibles between 1868 and 1871 but there is only one that resembers the suname Bay....
1869 BOYD WILLIAM BOW MARION CARLUKE /LANARK 629/00 0039
and sure enough this is your William....and the record will give you his parents names. Now that you have him pinpointed in 1871 perhaps you can take the reins and find him on subsequent census returns and/or his death.
Best wishes
Jean

Many thanks Jean,
I will start doing my homework now

Hello Nancy,
The 1841 Census for "North Muir, Cambusnethan" shows William and "Jean" Boyd with the following children, both born in Lanarkshire -
John Glasford Boyd 5
James Boyd 1
The 1851 Census for "Woodhall, Cambusnethan" shows William and "Jean" Boyd with the following children, all born in Cambusnethan -
John Boyd 14
James Boyd 10
George Boyd 9
Margaret Boyd 7
Robert Boyd 4
Catherine Boyd 1
The 1861 Census for "No18 Cambusnethan" shows William and "Jean" Boyd with the following children, all born in Cambusnethan -
James Boyd 20
George Boyd 18
Margt Boyd 16
Robt Boyd 13
Catherine Boyd 10
Wm Boyd 9
Archd Boyd 2
Regarding the information on the Ancestry.com 1871 Census it has Jane Boyd age "1" but this is probably a mistake as it also lists her as a Scholar. As said elsewhere Jane was born in 1861.

I have plenty of info on William Boyd who married Jean/Jane Boyd. He was my gt granddad x4 his Son George was my line on the tree. I have been trying for years to work out who John Glasford boyd was, because When James was Born in 1840 he was listed as child one and George was child 2. How much info can you share.

Hi Robbie,
Here's what I've managed to "dig-up" for you, no William Boyd though, sorry. (Or his 2nd wife)
There is a monumental inscription in the old churchyard that reads -
"1854 This is the intended burial place of James Hepburn and Margaret Douglas. Their daughter Margaret died 3rd March 1893 aged 76 years. Her husband Thomas Smith died 23rd August 1876 aged 65 years".
The burial records for the old churchyard plots only begin in the last quarter of the 19th century, so there will, no doubt, have been many internments between 1854 (the date of the erection of the headstone) and Thomas' death in 1876. For this plot the entries are as follows -
(All subsquent dates are of internment)
Owners of this plot were James Hepburn and Margaret Douglas.
Interred in the South lair -
MARGARET SMITH, aged 63 years, 4th September 1896.
Interred in the Centre lair -
MARGARET SMITH, aged 76 years, 6th March 1893.
Interred in the North lair -
JOHN SMITH, aged 7 years, 6th December 1892.
JOHN SMITH, aged 10 months, 24th January 1893.
-------------------------
The next 2 are "Pauper burials".
THOMAS CHALMERS, Newmains, aged 7 weeks.
Parents - Robert Chalmers and Margaret Boyd.
Interred in common ground. 7th January 1867.
JANE BOYD, housewife, Newmains, aged 54 years, married.
Parents - James Hepburn and Margaret Douglas.
Interred in the old churchyard, 30th March 1868.
(She may well have been put in the Hepburn family plot).
The following 11 burials are all in one plot in the old walled "Private" burial ground, adjacent to the old churchyard. The plot number is 604.
MARY JANE CHALMERS, housewife, Newmains, aged 55 years, married.
Parents - William Dunbar and Jane Miller.
Interred 1st May 1877.
THOMAS CHALMERS, furnace keeper, Newmains, aged 59 years, widower.
Parents - Thomas Chalmers and Elizabeth Stevenson.
Interred 22nd March 1880.
WILLIAM CHALMERS, Mossneuk, aged 6 years.
Parents - Robert Chalmers and Margaret Boyd.
Interred 1st September 1881.
MARGARET CHALMERS, housewife, Newmains, aged 40 years, married.
Parents - William Boyd and Jane Hepburn.
Interred 2nd March 1885.
ROBERT CHALMERS, coal miner, Newmains, aged 40 years, widower.
Parents - Thomas Chalmers and Mary Jane Dunbar.
Interred 7th June 1886.
JOHN CHALMERS, Newmains, aged 5 years.
Parents - Robert Chalmers and Margaret Boyd.
Interred 6th June 1887.
MARY JANE D. CHALMERS, Newmains, aged 9 months.
Parents - William Chalmers and Fanny Weir.
Interred 19th January 1895.
SAMUEL CHALMERS, Cambusnethan, aged 1 month.
Parents - Samuel Chalmers and Isabella Paterson.
Interred 9th April 1896.
SAMUEL CHALMERS, miner, Cambusnethan, aged 23 years, married.
Parents - Robert Chalmers and Margaret Boyd.
Interred 1st July 1896.
MAGGIE CHALMERS, Newmains, aged 1 year 8 months.
Parents - James Chalmers and Marion McEwan.
Interred 16th September 1898.
NEWBORN MALE CHALMERS, Crindledyke, aged "few minutes".
Parents - Thomas Chalmers and Margaret Stewart.
Interred 28th September 1898.
The next (and last) 2 are buried in the new cemetery.
MARGARET MOONEY CHALMERS, schoolgirl, Newmains, aged 12 years 11 months.
Parents - William Chalmers and Fanny Weir.
Interred section E1845. 9th March 1910.
Plot owner - William Chalmers, coal miner, 20 Main Street Newmains.
JOHN CHALMERS, coal miner, died Glasgow royal Infirmary, usual residence Newmains. Aged 53 years, married.
Parents - Thomas Chalmers and Mary Jane Dunbar.
Interred section E1629. 15th April 1912.
Plot owner - Thomas Chalmers, coal miner, 22 Houldsworth Street Newmains.
(There are some internments for the children of John Boyd and Abigail Borland, also children of George Boyd and Martha Morton. Ring any bells?)
Hope this helps,
Lodger.
-
Hi Lodger,
Thanks for the info, it is much appreciated.
George Boyd and Martha Morton is my direct line. I know they had 9 children. James Born 1879 was my gt.grand dad. If you have any info of there children that died, that would be great so I can add it to my tree. John Boyd and Abigail Borland....Hmm I thought John would have been William Boyd b1818 Unlce, as Williams Dad was called James boyd. As far as I can recall he died prior to the 1841 cenus, but the family came from Cumbernauld and James(the father was possibly from Ireland)
So what ever info you have is much appreciated indeed. Can you tell me where I can find the info too?
Once again, thanks very much indeed.
Robbie

Hi Robbie,
I found 3 burials for children of George Boyd and Martha Morton. All 3 were pauper's burials, and all 3 were buried in the old churchyard. This makes me think that they may have been interred in a family plot, perhaps the Hepburn plot.
MARTHA BOYD, Newmains, aged 5 months.
Interred 19th March 1874.
STILLBORN MALE BOYD, Dalziel.
Interred 1st May 1875.
JOHN McC. BOYD, Dalziel, aged 7 years.
Interred 26th January 1876.
Hope this info fills in some blanks for you.
Cholera was rife in Cambusnethan and Dalziel at that time, so it may have taken these children.
Lodger.

Hi
Thanks again for the info, I have added it to my tree. Can you tell me how I can find this info regarding the burials?
Its a pity I cant find anything for William Boyd, so I guess I am stuck for now. There does apprear to be alot of illnesses in those area's during that time.
Do you look at other family names too. I have been doing this for years and every so often I get stuck. I do have a family puzzle to try and solve, but keep hitting a brick wall.
Going Back to George Boyd b1842, apparently he had 2 older brothers one called John Glasford boyd, he shows up on the 1861 cenus, then dissappears and I cant find anything else!
The other mystery I have to try and solve is in connection with the Wylie family in the Eagelsham Area.
Robbie

Hi Lodger,
Have you managed to find anything else on the Boyd family?
Robbie
-
Hi Robbie,
I have given you everything I had on the family, were you looking for something in particular?
Lodger
-
Hi
Thanks for all your help. I am due up in scotland in a few weeks so wanted to know the address for the cambusnethan cemetary, so I could go and see the headstones for myself. Also did you have anything on the other side of my family tree, the scoulfields and camerons who were in blantyre and hamilton.
Thanks and Happy new year
Robbie
-
Hi Lodger,
My PC has crashed and I had to rebuild. Do you still have the pictures of the Hepburn headstones you sent me earlier this year?
Your help is much appreciated.
Thanks
Robbie
-
Hi Robbie, Yes I still have them, send me your email address in a PM.
-
Hi Lodger,
Very long time no speak. I guess you are still doing research. Thanks for all you previous assistance. When we last spoke, you mentioned info about John Boyd and Abigail Boreland and there Children. John Boyd may have been the family member I have been looking for as I cant find him listed anywhere are the 1851 census. It is quite likely he was the eldest child of Willam Boyd and Jean Hepburn, although it states James Boyd was the 1st registered child in 1840. Can you let me know what info you have on John Boyd and Abigail Boreland, as they seemed to be in the Cambusnethan area.
Your help is very much appreciated.
Best Regards,
Robbie

Hi Robbie, here's what I have on burial records for John & Abigail.
MARGARET BOYD, Coltness, aged 1 year.
Parents - John Boyd & Abella Borland.
Interred in plot 93 common ground on 11th March 1861.
JANE LIMOND BOYD, Coltness Mains, aged 7 years.
Parents - John Boyd & Abigail Borland.
Interred in plot 93 common ground on 28th March 1862.
HELEN MORTON, housewife, Cambusnethan, aged 32 years, married.
Parents - John Boyd & Abigail Borland.
Interred in C331 on 7th September 1880.
No sign of John or Abigail but the records I have end at 1917 and there are gaps about 1902 - 05.
I find it amazing that the 1st 2 children are both in the same common grave, one year apart. I wonder if the gravedigger was a friend or relation?
Good luck,
Lodger
-
Hi Lodger,
Thanks for that. I may need to go back to the drawing board with that though as I need to be sure its the right John Boyd.
Also, I am looking at another branch of the tree...Clark and Wylie side. John Clark died aged 43 in Cambusnethan...I just need to find a bit more about his sisters. His parents were James Clark(he was a Farmer) and his Mother was called Marion Wylie. Orignally from Fenwick
Thanks
Robbie
-
Hi Robbie,
There is an entry in the common ground register for John Clark -
JOHN CLARK, waggon driver, Chapel, aged 43 years, married.
Parents - James Clark & Marion Wylie.
Interred in common ground on 16th December 1862.
2 questions for you.
A. Was John's wife Janet Sillers?
B. Were James' parents James Clark & Agnes Logan?
Lodger.
-
Hi there,
My Word how do you do it! Well done for finding that. I already knew about John Clark dying young. You are correct that his wife Janet Sellars(sillars) and his father James...not sure about James's Parents names but I suppose they would fit as he did have a daughter called Agnes.......I was more keen on the Wylie Side because there is some connection to Lord Wylie I beleive, but never getting any further.
James Clark was listed as a Farmer on John's death cert, but I have nothing on Marion Wylie. The Wylie name carried through a couple of generations in the UK but still appears in USA, where a distant cousin lives who I will see hopefully next year and her GtGT Gran had a box of paperwork that we will delve into.
Interesting indeed.
Is there other information on James & Marion??
Thank you very much, you are a great help
Robbie

Brilliant,
Not so sure about James Clark though...It would depend if his wife was Marion Clark(m.s Wylie) plus on John Clarks death cert is says both Parents Deceased..I may need to dig up the death record for James Clark.
Thanks again!

-
Hi there,
Long time no speak. Im not sure if they are the same boyds, because the Boyd Im looking for is John Glasford Boyd born in 1837. He appears on the Census with our relations in 1851, however the 1st child born to William and Jean was James Boyd born in 1840...Thats what got me thinking about the John Boyd and Abigail.
Have you got any further back with the Boyds or any further forward? I still go to Scotland regular, so I may pop in one day. I am desperate for some old pictures too. Do you have any??
Speak soon
Robbie

Hi again Lodger,
Is there a way I can find this information out about the burials? i.e a website I can check as there are several more I would like to see in Lanarkshire?
Thanks
