Title: POTTER in South Australia
Post by: tina09 on Saturday 16 January 10 10:50 GMT (UK)
I am looking for any information on the Potter family in particular Walter Potter, His father was Lazarus, He was born about 1865. His 1st marriage was in 1891 to Constance Butterfield and they had 3 children. In 1910 he remarried Beryl May Dowdell.
I would like to find his mother name and if he had any siblings and the children he had in his 2nd marriage.

There are 4 children registered to a  Lazarus POTTER and  a Mary Hannah HUDSON in South Australia but they are all born in the late 1890s and early 1900s so they are not the ones you are looking for.    :-\

I see this Lazarus fits with your query on the Cambridge Board

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=3hgn6h7pjbl95t04bmq2l87n04&topic=417784.new

I have found nothing further in SA.
Only Walter listing Lazarus as father at marriage, (prior to children of Lazarus' second marriage) Walters second marriage lists father as Nazareth in index
No deaths of children listing Lazarus as father and no births of children to Lazarus (prior to second marriage)

Have PMed the 3 births listed to Walters 1910 marriage to Beryl May Rosaville Dowdell. (She is the daughter of James - I have an interest in his sister Annie Rose - the marriage of Walter and Beryl was at Annie's home.  ;) )

Hopefully someone may find something over the border in Vic

Cheers Kris  :)

Another researcher's material makes mention of CLARA POTTER, daughter of LAZARUS POTTER.

There is a Lazarus POTTER b.c1839 with parents Joseph and Hannah on the 1841 census in Cambridgeshire, West Wratting.  His eight siblings include a an older sister Susan b.1838 and younger brother Christopher b.1840 whose births are on free bdm with 2nd given name Ketteridge/Kitteridge, but no registration on free bdm for Lazarus.

Marriage
POTTER Joseph
KITTERIDGE Hannah
17 Oct 1818      Shudy Camps, Cambridge, England

Lazarus's age was given as 42 years at the time of his marriage in 1889 ie b.1845 however he was marrying a much younger woman ;)  Mary Hannah HUDSON gave her age as 25 years in 1889 ie b. 1864 however her death registration shows a birth in c1859.  Pity Lazarus's father is noted as unrecorded on the marriage reg.

The Lazarus POTTER arriving in 1855 aged 15 is a match with the Lazarus b. 1839 on the 1841 census.

Something not adding up here if the newspaper information is correct.

Yes Cando
I do agree there are conflicts in the dates.

http://www.royalblood.co.uk/D112/I112992.html

The author of this tree { others' work viewed always with caution!} lists the children to JOSEPH and HANNAH, but LAZARUS is not there among the offspring.

The birthing schedule is steady and there is not even a real gap where he may have arrived.First child 1819. Last 1845. So where he came from on the census is a mystery.

We could consider perhaps that he was "adopted into the family".

You certainly have a point Sue. Susan is 4 years, Lazarus is 2 years  and Christoper 1 year  on the 1841.

Perhaps Susan was not immediately registered at birth as she would be noted as 3 years of age on the 1841 census which was taken on 7 Jun 1841.  Civil reg only commenced in July 1837 so perhaps not everyone was prompt in registering their offspring as they should have been.  I understand it was not compulsory.  I found this snippet quite interesting Originally, the registrars had to travel around and visit the people who had an event and make a note of the details. A new Act of 1874 removed this and it was up to the people to visit the local registrar office to record the event.

Births Mar 1838
POTTER Susan Ketteridge  Linton 14/77

Births June 1840
POTTER Christopher Kitteridge  Linton 14/71

If you do a search for a Lazarus POTTER and no other identifying data, on the 1841 census, there is only one result...the following.

1841 Census West Wratting, Cambridgeshire
POTTER, Joseph 40     Not born county
POTTER, Hannah 40
POTTER, Elizabeth 20
POTTER, James  15
POTTER, Hannah  15
POTTER, William 13
POTTER, Josiah   9
POTTER, Joseph 6
POTTER, Susan  4
POTTER, Lazarus 2
POTTER, Christopher  1      All born county except Head of house, Joseph who on the 1851 census is born Suffolk.

1851 Census does not show a younger son than Christopher.  There are two grandsons James 5 years and Albert 11 months.

Hannah is aged 51 on the 1851 census...possibly her birth below as place of birth is H......., Cambridge.

KETTERIDGE Hannah
Birth 14 Apr 1798  Horseheath, Cambridge Eng.
Baptism 28 Apr 1798  Horseheath, Cambridge, Eng
Father Christopher KETTERIDGE     Mother Mary

I haven't seen any online tree so can only work from the indexes and census.

South Australian Government Gazette 1859
List of unclaimed Letters at the General Post Office at June 1859
POTTER, Lazarus

Brands South Australian Directory
1901
POTTER Lazarus P 7 7

South Australian Directory 1924
POTTER Lazarus lbr Wolseley
POTTER Richard lbr Wolseley
POTTERlbr  Wolseley

I wonder about Nazareth as Walter's father on the 2nd marriage.  I would suggest an error...both biblical names.

Cheers

Thank you, especially for the news paper article I have one from an adelaide paper. From what I researched Lazarus was born in 1837 to Elizabeth Potter and William Martin in Cambridgeshire, I have a copy of the extract and everyone assumes that Joseph and Hannah are his parents based on the censes. His age quoted in the newspaper stories do appear to be wrong based on the birth record.

Walter Potter had 3 children in his 1st marriage, Edwin Leslie, Mary Adelaine and Edith Annie. I think he had a sister Alice but I am certain that their was at least 1 more. This is where I get really stuck Trying to find out more on Walter.

and on the death indexes.  Have you seen the headstone at Bordertown Cemetery.

Was the immigration record of Lazarus aged 15 years on the CAROLINE in 1855 correct?

Cheers

Lazarus' baptism is listed in the linked thread on the Cambridge Board.

His birth lists him as MARTIN

MARTIN Lazarus Martin Sep 1/4 1839 Linton 14 73

It looks like his uncle was aboard the same ship. Will check the details on the passenger list at the library.

Cheers Kris  :)

I think it would be about right. Cambridgeshires CAMDEX online records have him being born 5th July 1839 died 27 July 1936 which means he was more like 97 when he died, Yes I have a copy of the Headstone at Bordertowm Cemetery

Interesting information,
Lazarus Potter, came to Australia in 1855 on the ship the "caroline", but what is interesting is that in the Biographical entries for South Australia that he has a 1st marriage to a Mary Baker nee Eveers who died in 1888. Is this the lady that you mean because I have so far not found any information on her, I know that Lazarus had 3 children in his 1st marriage WALTER, ALICE and ? , This is the line that I am meant to descend from so it is all really helpful.
Can you share any sources about Mary , thank you ::)

Yes that's my Tree on Ancestry, But my subscription has expired. Also the tree is no way near 100 right. The line from Edith Potter to Lazarus is fine but from there I am still refining it.
Edith Richards was my GGrandma and Lazarus was her grandfather she told me that he was married to a Mary Seward, I think in the marriage records there is a record of their union, but I will need to double check

I am it appears related to Lazarus Potter as I have only just found out so I am blown away to find out this information as there has been a gap in family history beyond our grandparents for myself that I have only just begun to explore..... through his son Walter Potter's second marriage our more recent family generations eminates from SA and particularly Wolsely my Great grandfather was Walter, whose son was William Walter George Potter one of three children ( 2 other siblings Daisy who married G. Cameron....... and Dorothy) to Walter Potter and Beryl May Dowdell, our line has lived in the Wimmera, Dimboola / Antwerp regions for a long time since leaving Wolsely.
