I am looking for descendants of Henry and/or William Eyre (siblings) born about 1870 in Sheffield. (Sons of Thomas Eyre - a filemaker, and Mary Anne Eyre).
Other siblings are Ann Elizabeth Eyre (bn c. 1859), and Mary Eyre (bn c.1861)
I am researching the father (Thomas') brother Henry, (my ggrandfather) and can assist with much general family information.
** I can track this family through to the 1871 Census but cannot find any of them after that date.
Anyone descended from this line can possibly assist me in tracking this (my) Eyre line back prior to the 1790's.
Thanks
Ed. Eyre (NZ)

Hi Ed
Yes, I think the 1881 is right
Here is Ralph Henry in 1901 at the same address - sister Mary in the household, right age to match the 1871 daughter Mary.
1901: 20 Norroy Street, Brightside Bierlow, Sheffield
RG13/ Piece: 4379/ Folio: 176/ Page: 37
Head: Ralph H EYRE 33, single, Conical Spring Temperer [worker] b Sheffield
Sister: Mary EYRE 39, single, b Sheffield (abt 1862)
Brother: Charles EYRE 22, single, b Sheffield [imbecile]
DEATH: Ralph Henry EYRE - age 40 - Sheffield

1881: 20 Norroy Street - Brightside Bierlow, Sheffield

Mrs DARNELL is nee Ann Eliza/Elizabeth EYRE ;D - lodgers maybe, but true relationship to the Head, Mary Ann: is son-in-law, daughter & grandchildren :
MARRIAGE: Dec Qtr 1876 - Sheffield
Major DARNELL and Ann Eliza /Ann Elizabeth EYRE
on same page - 9c, pg 477
I think Ann's birth was registered as Ann Eliza - Jun Qtr 1858 Sheffield. The only possible one I see.

Possible death of the father/husband:
Thomas EYRE 36 - Mar Qtr 1872 - Sheffield
http://www.sheffieldindexers.com/BurialIndex.html
EYRE, Thomas (Filesmith, age 36).
Died at Graystock Street/ Buried on January 4, 1872 in Consecrated ground/
Grave Number 14, Section F1 of Burngreave Cemetery, Sheffield.
In same grave are:
EYRE, Alfred age 1 (Son of John EYRE) bur 1861, died at Corby St,
EYRE, Helena age 8 days, (Dau of Thomas EYRE) bur 1862, died at 33 Marshall St.
EYRE, Thomas age 2 & half (son of Thomas EYRE), bur 1868, died at Greystock St
MASON, Jane age 48 (wife of George MASON), bur 1875, Died at 24 Andover Street
If you look at Norroy St on a map, you will see it's location in realtionship to streets Corby, Graystock, Saville .
I think the combined family of :
Widow Mary Ann EYRE with her unmarried children Mary, Ralph H, William & Charles, along with her married daughter:
Ann DARNELL & her husband Major & their children
are all missing off the 1891 Census where by all accounts, they should be at 20 Norray Street. I can't find hide nor hair of any of them.
1891: District 48 Brightside Bierlow -contains the parts of Norroy Street lying between Greystock Street & Corby Street and is recorded in RG12/ Piece: 3834/ Folio 85/ Page 38 to page 40. Page 40 is the last page of that Folio and ends with 34 Norray. In all, even numbers 22 to 34 Norray are there and also odd numbers 23 to 31.
1891: District 47 Brightside Bierlow - seems to have the other part of Norray - the part which runs between Saville & Graystock. It ends with 18 Norray. No 20 and no 21 can I find. I suspect 20 may be on the cnr of Greystock - partly because of the address given for the Thomas EYRE who died 1872.
Possible death of the mother/wife:
Mary Ann EYRE 56 - Mar Qtr 1894 - Sheffield
So only the daughter Ann Eliza is producing descendants so far - her siblings Mary, Ralph Henry and Charles almost certainley had no children, going by what we see above.
If the Thomas EYRE who died 1872 is the right one, Charles can't be his son but that's not to say Thomas' widow isn't the mother - Mary Ann would have been around 40 when Charles was born and older mothers have a higher chance of a Downs Syndrome baby which Charles may well have been - tagged as he was with the 'label' imbecile? Then again - - I wonder if Charles was the illigitimate son of the daughter Mary, passed off as her brother?
Which leaves the last known sibling, William b abt 1870 to look at..

The most likely match for William is this one:
1901: 81 Danville Street, Brightside Bierlow, Sheffield
RG13/ Piece: 4376/ Folio: 163/ Page: 16
Head: William EYRE 31, Overhead Steam Crane Driver in Steelwks, b Sheffield
Wife: Martha EYRE 30, b Sheffield
Dau: Mary Ann EYRE 4, b Sheffield
Only likely marriage 1881 to 1901 is:
FreeBMD: Dec Qtr 1895 - Sheffield
William EYRE and Martha BLYTHE on same page.
I can see no match for this William on the 1891, strengthening the suspicion he is the right one and is part of the missing household in 1891.

And for completeness, the DARNELLs in 1901:
1901: 245? (or 275) Greystock St, Brightside Bierlow, Sheffield
RG13/ Piece: 4379/ Folio: 164/ Page: 13
Head: Fred WRIGHT 24, General Labourer Steelwks, b Sheffield
Wife: Edith WRIGHT 23, b Sheffield
Dau: Nellie WRIGHT 3 mths, b Sheffield
Boarder: Anne E. DARNELL 42, married, b Sheffield
Boarder: Annie DARNELL 18, unm, Confectioner Sweet (worker), b Sheffield
Boarder: Ruth DARNELL 7, b Sheffield
Boarder: Major DARNELL 45, married, Blacksmiths Striker (worker) b Brigg, Lincolnshire
Edith WRIGHT is their daughter (the one age 3 in 1881)
FreeBMD MARRIAGE - Dec Qtr 1900 - Sheffield
Edith DARNALL & Fred WRIGHT on same page.
Also of interest, while 20 Norroy Street isn't found in 1891 (by me at least!) - Nr 24 is there and occupied by James DARNILL age 39 b Brigg, Lincs and his wife Elizabeth & chidren. He is Major's brother (per 1861 census). In 1901, James is still at that address and they have a nephew, George BIRCH age 6, with them. (James' son Edwin age 25 in 1901 is also described by that unfortunate term "imbecile").

Hi Yorkshire Granny
This just to let you know that I have sighted your posting. I have been distracted from this line of enquiry for quite some time now but am still keen to pursue it if I can seize upon something to investigate. I have no idea whether or not the forebear you're interested in is of the same family as mine. However, I would like to contact you by 'Personal Messages' but cannot do this because you've only so far had this one posting. (if you would care to post a couple more messages, I think it will then allow me to get a Message to you).
I look forward to making contact.
