Title: COMPLETED: Off to take photos at Rookwood, this weekend.
Post by: Jamjar on Friday 15 January 10 07:38 GMT (UK)
I'll be out at Rookwood most likely, tomorrow, but possibly Sunday.

I'm happy to do headstone hunting.

Oh Jamjar ;D

I'd be most grateful if you see if there is a headstone for the following
Anastatia FLANAGAN
Mortuary 2
Area 2
Grave 1972

In the "nice" mown part I think :D

Many thanks
Annie

I know the feeling.  :(

Is that the correct spelling of her name?

There are two E's. I'm hoping it the easier of the 2. Not that I mind either.  ;)

Well sometimes spelt as Anastasia, Jamjar

also known as Anna

but I'm sure the death record said Anastatia also

EDIT: death entry was for Anastasia

Hi Jamjar,

I would be most grateful if you could see if there is a headstone for Ann McGrath. She was buried in the Anglican section of the cemetery in 1884.

Thanks and regards,

Elfie ;D

Oh, the Anglican section. My favourite area.  ;)

For your records:

Area   Anglican(AN)
Section   R
Grave No:1082

Date of interment:    27/10/1884

I don't like my chances. The area in which she is buried is Crown Land and was used for public burial. I wonder if it means for people who couldn't pay to be buried.

I'll check it out, but if the grass is too long and the graves are to scarce, I'll never find a number for the grave.

;) Ah yes, the Anglican section.

So the R stands for Crown Land? What you said would account for why the rest of her family are buried together in Rookwood Independent (Old Ground). I am still waiting for her death certificate, but from what I have gathered her family was not financially well off.

Thanks Elfie :)

Not just 'R' Elfie, from J to RRRR. It's a very large area indeed.

You can see the map on the Anglican website. It's coloured yellow.

Jamjar,

Thank you :) :)
Agnes was a bit of a fibber with her age...when she married she reduced it by about 15 years...seems Hans Peter never found out. ;D

Hi Elfie,

No luck finding the grave. As I thought, not many headstones at all and most of the graves there don't have numbers on them, so you can't even get a general idea. So, I walked the lot.

Had a lovely chat with a blue tongue, who didn't mind me invading its space.

Thought I'd post these photos to give folk an idea of how overgrown and neglected the area is.

That is a disgrace!

Glad my family aren't there :'(

Photos on their way Annie.

Yes, it's a disgrace.

Some folk have been in there and put new markers on the occasional grave. There were even a couple of those war plaques the govenrment put on.

All they need to do is tether a few goats for some months and the area would be cleared.

No it wouldn't have.  ;D

The Catholic section is well layed out and neat and tidy. Many graves have numbers, so you get an idea where you need to be and then do a little counting.

Oh, and there is a very clear map to print, which makes it easy to find the sections.

I was thinking, when I was wandering, how I'd love to do that as a full time job. Just seek and search and take photos.  ;)

Thanks for having a look Jamjar. I would have said thank you earlier but I didn't have the chance to check my email until just now. The state of the cemetery is just atrocious! :'( Is it just the Anglican section that is bad? You'd think a big cemetery like this would be well maintained. It's sad to see.

Not a problem Elfie.

Yes, it's only the Anglican section in that state.  >:(
