Title: Gregory family
Post by: kereru1 on Thursday 14 January 10 01:35 GMT (UK)
Hi,  Ive just started a family tree and are trying to find links to
John & Eliza Gregory who emigrated (immigrated?)  23 July 1874 on ship Miltiades with 2 children from "Gravesend"  England.
(Childrens names George and Edith.

then in NZ other children born were:
Florence,
Alice,
Albert
Alfred
Ashwin
Ashley
(birth dates unknown).

My question is: Who were John Gregory's parents names or siblings names?  where was he born or what area did the family come from (England somewhere I suppose).   all I know is that John & Eliza lived in Puni, near Auckland, New zealand.

Hi Kereru,

Welcome to Rootschat!!!  There are loads of wonderful people who will be able to help you in your quest.

First off, it may be better to get this post moved to the New Zealand board where a concentrated crack can be made at it.  Not sure how to get it moved but a moderator could do it.

In order to go backwards from John and Eliza we may have to go forwards a bit as things like newspapers, wills, obituaries, cemeteries and certificates may/will hold the clues you need.

Cheers

Thanks,  yes I already have the info about Immigration to NZ.  Thats what got the ball rolling!

If I want to look up Deaths births & marriages (historical) in NZ then do I have to pay to get info or is there another way of getting info free?  thanks.

Dear Kereru,

Yes you can look up NZ BDM.  And I strongly suggest you read the following topic from the NZ Board:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,424797.0.html

And then apply it to https://www.bdmonline.dia.govt.nz/ as it is very handy.  You don't get everything but you can at least achieve a date without payment.

Hello Kereru, I am a great granddaughter of John and Eliza Gregory, my grandfather was Alfred and he was born at Awhitu Manukau Peninsula Auckland. There is or was a cousin called Winsome Gregory from Gisborne who was doing a family tree. The family lived down there at some stage as my mother Muriel was born there in 1922. She was the youngest of 4 daughters. I think it must have been after living at Puni, John Gregory used to play the organ at a little church called St Brides at Mauku (its still in use and has a lot of history attached to it, as maori wars were fought around it and it has tin plate over holes in the walls through which muskets were fired from) they retired to Balmoral Road Balmoral Auckland and my grandfather lived next door for a time. John and Eliza Gregory are buried at a Hillsborough Cemetery. I have quite a lot of history.

I have the family tree and I'm wanting to go back to John's Parents, all I have is his fathers name was George.
We are going on holiday in a few weeks around the east coast Gisborne, thats where my father was born.

Hello Kiwi Lass, and welcome to RootsChat!

Do you know when and where John and Eliza (or their children George and Edith) were born?  That will help us search for them in England, and hopefully find "your" John with his parents.

Have you got the marriage certificate?     this will tell you the names and occupations of the fathers, and will help to try and pin them down.

Also what witnesses on the marriage cert?

This looks like the reference for John's birth registration, with a spelling variation for his surname:

Births Jun 1848
GRAGROY  John
Evesham 18 391

Evesham registration district covers Hinton on the Green - Emmanuel and Sarah were both registered in the same district under the surname GREGORY.

Hi
Just found on 1871 census
John marr age 22 Glos Hinton on the Green
Eliza wife age 22 Worc
Kyrwick's Lane Aston Piece 3139 Folio 55 Page 29
So they are Birmingham , like me! I can't read John's occupation and Eliza's birthplace but I am sure someone else may be able to.

Hi
Don't know if you have seen this marriage

George Gregory to Anne Goodway/Hawtyn/Lovell?

Hi Marie, Thanks for that.

John occupation was a Groom, and Eliza ( Underhill) was born in Difford Worcestershire, her father was a railway Porter.

I find Ann with 3 different Surnames strange.

My they had big families in those days.

Take Care Robyn.

Hi
I think my short hand was a bit confussing - sorry.  I put the three surnames as when I look at the marriage index it gave me the choice of 3 Annes, so George could have been married to Anne Goodway or Anne Hawtyn or Anne Lovell.  I guess you have to have find the parish record or buy the cert to find out which one.  Marie

Post by: Daisypetal on Friday 27 January 12 16:18 GMT (UK)
Hi,

I think I can narrow down the choice of three Annes, the names with the same marriage details are,

John BEEVES
George GREGORY
Elisha NEWTON
Richard RILEY

Anne GOODWAY
Anne HAWTYN
Elizabeth HAYNES
Anne LOVELL

Richard RILEY
Anne HAWTIN or HAWTYN
16 Oct 1840   Banbury, Oxford

A bit of a chance but I found a Hannah who migth be Anne GOODWAYs sister,

05 May 1840 Banbury St Mary OXF Banns
John WILSON of Chipping Warden, full age, bachelor, farmer, father Thomas, farmer
Hannah GOODWAY of Banbury (Calthorpe Lane), full age, spinster, father Thomas, sawyer

In 1841 it looks like John and Hannah WILSON are in Chipping Warden,  HO107/795/6  f.3  p.1.

In 1851 Hannah WILSON widow has a sister Ann NEWTON, widow, living with her in Banbury,  HO107/1734  f.366  p.23, this could suppport the theory that Ann/e GOODWAY married Elisha NEWTON. There is a death for an

Elisha NEWTON  Jun Q  Banbury  16  2

So it looks like George GREGORY married Anne LOVELL but the only way to be sure is to get the cert. or one of the children's birth certificates.

Regards,
Daisy

Hi, if you are still looking for info on John Gregory's parents, They were originally from bicester in Oxfordshire (well father George at least). George b1820, was the last child of John (1783, ludgershall, buckinghamshire - 9 miles from Bicester) and Eleanor Timms 1783-1822. I'm a Descendant of George's elder brother John b1817 d1883. John 1783-1841 died in Banbury, around which time George's eldest two children, Harriet and Mary Anne were born, apparently then they moved to gloucestershire between 1842 and 1846 when son Emmanuel was born there.

I've put my dna on the family tree dna company, and sure hope other Gregory descendants will do the same, so we can confirm the family tree.

In 1962 a Thomas Winton Gregory completed a FT from the arrival of John and Eliza Gregory's arrival in NZ aboard the 'Miltitades' in 1874. Within that, there is considerable information about their early days in New Zealand. I still have a copy of that FT. I am the grandchild of one of their children, Florence, who married Alfred Percival Wright in 1908. If anyone would like to know more (or extract info from the FT),  I am willing to discuss.
