Title: Meagher/Mahera Coolmoney, Fermanagh -*COMPLETED*
Post by: Verbs on Wednesday 13 January 10 08:22 GMT (UK)
I'm looking for the origins of a Graham family who emigrated to Australia in 1841.  I had been told that they came from Pettigo, but the Australian immigration documents say they were "natives of Meagher (or Mahera) Coolmoney, Fermanagh.

I haven't been aber to locate any place with a name anything like this.  Does anyone know where it is (or was)?

Many thanks . . .

It seems to have suffered a bit in translation by the time it reached Australia! Most likely Magheraculmoney Parish (Lowtherstown Poor Law Union) in Co. Fermanagh. Lowtherstown itself is now called Irvinestown and is not far out of Enniskillen. Pettigo is on the Fermanagh/Donegal border. It's possible the family lived in Fermanagh but went to church in Pettigo like my relations. Pettigo to Irvinestown is only about 10 miles.

Many thanks for that.  It seems to clear up the problem.  My apologies for Australian ignorance.

Not your fault for having difficulty- probably a combination of Irish accent in Australia, phonetic spelling and possibly illiteracy.
