Title: Frederick William SMITH
Post by: baracws on Tuesday 12 January 10 18:43 GMT (UK)
Looking for the above in the 1851 and 1861 census, born around 1847, Bath.
I've found him in the 1871 census with wife Elizabeth at Walcot (no children at this time).
Thanks in advance.

There is a candidate in Walcot, with a Father Henry; a Shoemaker.

Have you got your man's marriage papers, which will name his father and his trade?

Thank you both for your fast replies.
I have sent for that wedding certificate (it is the persons mentioned) perhaps I should have held my horses until the info arrives.

The wedding certificate arrived this afternoon, but unfortunately it is blank where the father's name should be.
Does this mean (as it seems to me) that Frederick was born out of wedlock?

possibly this one, which the transcriber has struggled with it seems.

Births Sep 1847

Smith  Frederick *     Bath  11 44

Middle name could be Sidney - which ties in with one of the census I saw for a Frederick S ....

The only 'fully named' man was born in the Bedminster District in 1850. On the 1851 census his parents are John and Matilda.

Added: He is married and in Worcs in 1871.

If he was illegitimate, his mother may have married and hence he will be perhaps under a step-fathers name in 1851 and 1861 census. Very common to see people reverting to their real names on marriage.

Thank you all for your help and for your varied replies.
It seems to me that his name was Frederick William because this name has been passed down the each generations up to my brother.

I have seen the birth entry, which is a very poor copy, when viewing the original, just cannot make out the second name.

Don't know which way to go now but it's probable that all the Smiths in our family since him are not Smiths after all, but I suppose no one is 100% of their pedigree.

any witnesses named Smith - but state them anyways as it might help locate him in 1861 ...
