does anyone know if chester has a heritage center, or can recomend any books that would give an indication of what chester was like in the 1800,s

Hello Dyoll, Chester has the following wonderful resources which will assist you.
The first link is the Chester Heritage Centre and the second the Cheshire Record and Archives.
