I looked up an 1891 census return on Ancestry, and the address was Ballencrieff Tollhouse. Can anyone enlighten me, please ?
Cheers

I don't know about the actual "Tollhouse" but Ballencreiff Toll is a small group of houses situated to the north of Bathgate, just outside the town, on the road to Torphichen.
My wife's granny lived there. :)

Thank you for that. ;D

There's a reproduction of an old postcard of Ballencrieff Toll in a booklet called 'Old Bathgate', by Sybil Cavanagh, published by Stenlake Publishing www.stenlake.co.uk. I suspect that the original card is among the holdings in West Lothian Archives.
