Hi Pam my problem is I don't know which part of Scotland my ancestors came from I searched the I G I found all the Family in Manchester In 1841 the census saying
William Campbell married Elizabeth Moffett b 1799 about 1830 in Scotland, at least two of the children were born in Scotland ,the rest in Manchester, the ones born in Scotland were
I have on the 1841 census that William was a silk weaver b 1797 Scotland
I have Isabella b 1826 Scotland
Jane b 1828 Scotland
My brother has spent a few pounds on Scotlands people and cannot find the birthplace we really don't know where to look next I have all the info from them reaching Manchester but not where they came from
any Ideas would help please

Pam isn't around much these days to help, and this is a resources thread, so I'll move your request where it should get more help!
Do you have the children at least in later censuses to see whether they say where they were born in Scotland?

Alan can you post whatever Facts you have eg which census records you have for which family members, the names you know from any certificates, ages at marriage/death etc.
The entries for them on the IGI are submitted and rather vague and may be based on what was found in the census records!
The more you can tell us the better we can help :)

1851 census shows Manchester Ref HO 167/2225
Will Campbell Head 54 Silk weaver Born Scotland
Elizabeth Wife 52 born Scotland
Isabella 24 Silk Weaver born Scotland
All other children born Manchester
1861 census shows Manchester ref RG9/2929
Will Campbell 65
born scotland
No wife shown
Mary 21 born Manchester
Douglas 19 born Manchester
Bruce 18 born Manchester
John Campbell Head 26 Born Manchester
Wife Elizabeth Harris 26 silk weaver born manchester

on any childs cert I have it only shows Will Campbell as born in Scootland

Bodzy, apparently the first Jacquard Loom in Britain was installed in Paisley for the weaving of silk, they supplied the Colonies and even France as well as the home market. I would have try the Paisley "Buddies" first.....Skoosh.
