Title: Ede family in Epsom, Surrey
Post by: Just Claire on Saturday 09 January 10 19:00 GMT (UK)
I'm working on my husband's line and have got back to the father of Thomas Ede, baptised 14/12/1851  at St. Martin of Tours Parish Church, Epsom, Surrey. Thomas Ede married Susan Reddick in 1873 in Stoke D'Abernon. Thomas Ede has been traced in the census in the following towns:

1861 in Wilton, Wiltshire
1871 Epsom Common, Surrey
1881 Carshalton, Surrey
1891 Carshalton, Surrey
1901 Carshalton, Surrey

I think Thomas Ede died before Dec 1907.  From his baptism date it said he was born 20 Sep 1849 but the family have the 20th September for four of the children's birth dates but I know one of his siblings, Matilda was born on 9 Oct 1851 and not 20 Sep as the baptism record stated, so I found that a bit weird - I don't know if it was a clerk's error or not!

I can't find Thomas Ede as a baby in the 1851 census.

I know that Thomas Ede's father was called George Ede and his mother was  Eliza Duke.  I think George Ede died before 1871 and he married Eliza Duke after 1841.  Eliza was born in Banstead, Surrey.  I'm not sure where George was born or when but I'm assuming it is in the 1820's, possibly in the Epsom/Ewell, Surrey region?  George had been a labourer and game-keeper.

I can't definitely find George Ede in the census 1841-1861

1841 Census
There was a George Ede in Fetcham in Elmore House, born in Surrey in c. 1825, age 16 in the same household as a publican John Coleman. Occupation 'MS' man-servant?  I can't be sure this is my George Ede yet as there were Ede's in Cobham and Guildford, Surrey and it might be a George from one of their families.

1851 Census
There was a George Ede in Charlwood (District 5b) in the 1851 census, Ecclesiastical parish of Wincester, schedule no. 40 Rose Cottage (next to Woodlands Farm No. 1), who was married, age 26, born c. 1825 in Epsom, Surrey.  George Ede was recorded as 'Mr Richards Servant Groom Domestic. Also living in the same cottage was a 19year old Edward Lee, a ? miller, born in Shellwood, Leigh. I'm not sure that this is my George Ede or not but the born in Epsom, c. 1825 is interesting.

1861 Census

I can find Eliza living with some of her children with her sister's family.  Where was George Ede her husband (separated/prison/workhouse?) and why did Eliza get recorded as unmarried?

Old Workhouse, Banstead, Surrey - schedule no. 94 next to Tadworth Cottage, schedule no. 99

William Harris - age 42   born c. 1819 Chipstead, Surrey, head, Ag. Labourer
Caroline Harris - age 42   born c. 1819 Banstead, Surrey, wife
Harry Harris - age 24   born c. 1837 Banstead, Surrey, son, Ag. Lab.
William Duke - age 22   born c. 1839 Epsom, Surrey, son Ag. Lab
Elizabeth Harris - age 1   born c. 1860 Banstead, Surrey, daughter
William Jones - age 44   born c. 1817 Banstead, Surrey, gardner, boarder
Eliza Ede - age 39   born c. 1822 Banstead, Surrey, servant, unmarried, sister
Matilda Ede - age 9      born c. 1852 Epsom, Surrey, scholar, daughter
Mary Ede - age 4      born c. 1857 Epsom, Surrey, scholar, daughter
William Ede - age 2 months or 2  born c.  1860, Banstead, Surrey

George & Eliza Ede had 8 children

George Ede - born 10 May 1847, Epsom, Surrey
Charles Ede - born 20 Sep 1848?. Epsom, Surrey
Thomas Ede - born 20 Sep 1849?, Epsom, Surrey  died before14/12/1907
Matilda Ede - born 9 Oct 1851, bapt 14 Dec 1851 St. Martin's Epsom
Eliza Ede - born 20 Sep 1853? Epsom, Surrey
Charlotte Ann Ede - born 9 Aug 1855, married George W. Hammond 17/6/1879 Christchurch, Epsom, Surrey
Mary Ann Ede - born 16 Jul 1857, Epsom, Surrey
William Ede - born about 1861 Banstead, Surrey

I can't find yet where George Ede and Eliza Duke married after the 1841 census.

At one point (1871) Thomas was back living with his sister, Matilda, on Epsom Common, i don't know what happened to her?  There were 2 Ede families on Epsom Common but I have not yet linked George & Eliza Duke to these 2 families. There was also the famous Chuter-Ede family in the High Street in Epsom but again I can't link George & Eliza Duke into that family yet.  There were also Ede families in Ewell and Dorking but again I can't find the missing link!

I don't know where Thomas Ede was in 1851?

If anyone has any links with Ede families in the area and has any information about George & Eliza Ede and their son Thomas or other children, I would be very interested. There were so many Ede's in Epsom and Dorking that I feel that at some point they must be linked but I'd love to know where!

Thanks!
Claire

It is possible, of course, that they didn't marry (couldn't? George was previously married, etc)

Here's a link; I looked for the other children of George and Eliza in 1861 and found in Epsom:
(indexed as "Eads" on my index):

RG9/419 138/19
Epsom, Surrey
Common, Pan Tile Row (? not sure about address)
Thomas Eade, 37, married (no wife in household?), labourer b. Ewell
Elizth, 84, widowed, mother, housekeeper, b. Bath Somerset
Martha, 11, daughter b. Surrey
Charles, 9, son b. Surrey
William Per???, boarder, 30, labourer b. London
Eliza Eade, niece, 7 b. Epsom
Charlotte Eade, niece, 5, b. Epsom

It's possible Thomas is in 1841 with sister Margaret and parents Charles and Elizabeth; there are some older children on the IGI but no George - but no baptism for Thomas, either, so some might not be in the indexed records.  They're all christened in Ewell:
Elizabeth, 1800, Mary, 1802, Matilda, 1804, John, 1806, Harriott, 1808, Eliza, 1810, James, 1812, William, 1814, Harriot Jane, 1816, Margaret Maria, 1826.
(Children between 1816 and 1826 may  have been baptised at another church?)

This is probably a different family but Swete's 1860  Handbook of Epsom has an ad for

ELIZABETH EDE
wholesale retail and family
Bread and Biscuit Baker, Pastry Cook and Confectioner
corner of Church Street
HIGH STREET, EPSOM

A George Ede died in Epsom on 28 Jan 1850 aged 40 and has an M.I in St Martin's churchyard with his son George who died 9 Oct 1849 aged 3 yrs.  He left a will dated 1842 and describes himself as a miller. He left all to his wife Elizabeth. I think he is the George who married Elizabeth Falconer in Leigh, Surrey in 1832 and then moved to Epsom. He is the grandfather of James Chuter Ede.

The Elizabeth Ede in the advert above is the widow of the George who died in 1850

Hi all

Thanks Jorose -

I have found the Thomas Ede/Eade family before in census/baptism records.  He married Eliza Chapman and I had noted that William Ede, their son born 24/12/1853 was baptised on the same day as Eliza Ede, daughter of my George Ede and Eliza Duke.  This had seriously made me wonder if they were cousins and your find on the 1861 census does seem to show Eliza Ede and her sister Charlotte with their Uncle and his mother. I had previously wondered if Margaret (Thomas' sister on the 1841 census) was the mother of Charlotte and Eliza but perhaps now my George Ede is the brother of Thomas Ede c.1824 born in Ewell?

I'd forgotten to look at the other children's names on the IGI to see what they bring up, so thanks for that.  I will try and spend some more time on this at the weekend and see what I can find to try and link George Ede and Eliza Duke to Thomas Ede and Eliza Chapman.

Thanks for your help with this.

Hi ShaunJ and bdmayes

re. Elizabeth Ede - I've found her as a Grocer and Baker and she was James Chuter Ede's grandmother.  His Grandad was a George Ede and he died before 1851, so that could be his death record as his grandad was a miller.

I had their 4 children as:

Rebecca c. 1834 Epsom, Surrey
Elizabeth c. 1837 Epsom, Surrey
James c. 1840 Epsom, Surrey
Louisa c.  1845 Epsom, Surrey

I'd not picked up on a George Ede yet who died 9/10/1849 age 3 in this family group and the marriage in 1832 would tie in well with the birth of Rebecca Ede 2 years later in 1834.  I did not have her maiden name yet.  So far, I've not been able to tie my family into the well known Chuter-Ede family group.

Thanks for this info.

Your Thomas Ede appears in the 1851 census on Epsom Common with his mother Eliza Ede - both are incorrectly indexed on Ancestry as Elizabeth Fensham and Thomas Fensham, an understandable error when you look at the original entry. George is not there, so appears to be the one in Charlwood.

I am a researcher at Epsom and Ewell Local History Centre and will pursue this when I am there tomorrow (weather permitting)

Eliza (not Elizabeth) Fensham

Matilda Ede (1851) appears to have married William Stacey in Croydon RD in 4Q 1874 (2a 399).  There is a probable 1881 census listing for them in Ewell - William is a coachman born in Winchester.

Hi Brian

Many thanks for your help.  I've found the Henry Fensham and his wife Caroline A.R. Fensham in the1851 census on Epsom Common but do you think it also says Eliza Ede, relationship to head, 'wife'?  How come the enumerator recorded 2 wives for him in the same household?!

Eliza Duke had a sister called Caroline so I wondered if Henry's wife's maiden name was Duke but I found them marriage for Henry and Caroline

Apr-Jun 1844 vol 2 page 75 Holborn
Henry Fensham to Caroline Amelia Rachel Willshire

The children shown on the census as

George Fensham born c. 1847 Epsom, Surrey age 4
Thomas Fensham born c. 1849 Epsom, Surrey age 16months

tie in with Eliza Ede's children

George Ede born 10/5/1847 Epsom, Surrey
Thomas Ede born 20/9/1849 Epsom, Surrey

but Charles Ede born 20/9/1848 does seem to be missing on that 1851and not with his mother if the George and Thomas Fensham are actually George and Thomas Ede.  Perhaps Charles Ede did not survive infancy?

But who is the Caroline Fensham?! I did not have a Caroline Ede as a daughter of George Ede and Eliza Duke at all!  She must be Henry and Caroline's 6mths old daughter but why put Eliza Ede above Caroline when completing the form?

Also why would Eliza Ede be living with Henry and Caroline and their baby Caroline and Henry's 2 nieces?  It does not show her as a nurse of any sort or give her any occupation that might indicate what she was doing there.

Thank you for your help with this as with Ancestry's transcription error I don't think I would have found her.  I have posted an update on Ancestry to point out their error.

I've got Matilda Ede's birth certificate and it says birth date 9/10/1851 and not the data as stated in her baptism record. Her Dad George Ede was shown as a Labourer and her mother was Eliza Ede nee Duke.

I've got Thomas Ede's marriage certificate to Susan Reddick and it says his father is George Ede a Game Keeper.  It does not show that he is dead but I thought from census reports that Eliza Ede appeared as a widow before 12 Jan 1873.  Thomas' occupation was shown as a groom.  I've not got Thomas' birth certificate yet but had his cousin's one for Thomas Dukey Ede son of Eliza Ede nee Chapman.

I met Peter Reid at the Family & Local History centre and he put me in contact with Terry.  It turns out that Terry is related to one Epsom Ede family on the Common but I can't link into them yet! They were very friendly and helpful there!  Thanks for any help you can give!

Hello Claire

My interpretation of this 1851 census entry is that Eliza Ede and her two children were merely lodgers with the Fenshams. Eliza is shown as a 'wife' because she is neither unmarried nor a widow. I think the enumerator has also muddled his 'dittos' and included the Ede children below a Fensham name rather than below their mother Ede.  Charles Ede was buried in Epsom on 22 Nov 1849 aged 15 mths.

Thanks Brian for your thoughts on this.  I tried do look for connections between the Ede and Fensham/Duke names to see if there were any but could not find them, so lodging could explain it.

Thanks also for the sad info on Charles' death.

Where was Charles Ede buried as I can't see him on the Epsom cemetery burial listing on the Epsom & Ewell History Explorer website for Epsom cemetery?

How were you able to find him? Just curious!

Thanks

The cemetery did not open until 1871. Charles is in St Martin's churchyard.

Thanks Brian!  I did not think of that today.

He must have been born in Aug 1849 if he was 15months old and not the 20th Sep 1849 that I've always queried as the parish clerk recorded 4 of George & Eliza with birthdates of 20 Sep and I wondered if that was true!

Thank you for that. I did not think of being able to check the records for the Church or the date that the cemetery opened, though I was reading earlier about the first internment there, the dates did not hit me that I needed to be looking elsewhere for earlier burials!

Thanks!

Hi, I don't think my family tree directly relates to any of the Ede's mentioned above, but as I've only just stumbled on an Ede connection today it may be possible. I'm trying to find out more info on an Harriet Eliza Ede born in Epsom in 1884 and married James Cox in 1909. I have her in the 1901 census aged 16 working as a domestic servant in North Wimbledon but can't find her as Harriet Cox in 1911. Any help or pointers would be much appreciated. Happy to share any info I have although its quite limited at this stage.

Thanks
Tony

Hello Tony

I have a large amount of info on the ancestors of this Harriet Eliza Ede (but not on her decendants). She is indeed connected to the Ede family discussed above and is also distantly related to me.

I'm working on someone with the same surname who lived not far from Epsom. I think they maybe the same family. Her name would be Deborah Ede and born around 1965. If you get this message could you send me a private message as I don't fully understand how to use this website. Thank you.
