Title: Elsie Fullagar
Post by: KPM on Saturday 09 January 10 12:07 GMT (UK)
Hi

I'm just looking for a few suggestions as to what became of Elsie Fullagar.  I have searched extensively for her (as have other rootschatters throught census records) and she vanishes into thin air.

Elsie May Fullagar was born in 1888 in the Workhouse in Hoo - I have a copy of her birth certificate, have found her baptism in the parish records and also the workhouse entry when she was born.

That is all I have ever been able to find.  In 1891 there is no sign of any of the family - Census records have been checked numerous times and I am certain they have not been recorded.

By 1901, her mother and brother are once again in the workhouse but no sign of Elsie.

I have searched for a record of her death and found nothing.  I have also searched for a marriage in later years and the 1911 census - she's just not there.

I think she was probably 'adopted' and changed her name but would dearly love to know what became of her.  Can anyone offer any other suggestions?

Hi KPM,
I dare say you  know of this source. If not maybe there is something in the records. Maybeshe was adopted or assigned to an external guardian or something it would have been recorded.
Records for the Hoo Union Workhouse are held at

Medway Archives and Local Studies Centre, Strood.
Holdings include: Guardians' minutes (1835-1930); Ledger (1835-1930, with gaps); Births (1838-1922); Deaths (1838-1922); Creed register (1869-82, 1900-23); Admissions and discharges (1906-23); Punishment books (1851-1918); etc.
Definitely worth a look if you havent already been there and got the teeshirt.
                                                             Regards Rog.

Hi Rog

Thanks for coming back to me.

I've spent many hours at Medway Archives going through their records :)  However, I dont remember going through the Guardian minutes so it may be that there will be some information there.

As soon as this lovely snow goes I will have to take another trip to the Archives.

Thanks for your help

Hi Anne Marie,
I notice on the Parish Register entry for her Baptism Page 67 entry 531 she is shown as

June 29 1888  Elsie MaRy FullagEr Illegitimate Daughter of Elizabeth.

I know it seems nit picking but could make all the difference searching.
                                                                          Regards Rog

Hi Rog

This family are a bit of a nightmare!  The spelling of the surname differs depending on what record you look at.  As for Elsie, I not sure if she should be May or Mary - the work house records also record her as Mary but her birth certificate records her as May.  Who knows which one is correct!! ???

Thanks for your help

Hi,

A possible death, I can't find a birth to match this Elsie, and her death age could have been guessed by the informant.

Elsie FULLIGAR    Jul Q 1899    Tunbridge    2a  522
Age: 13

Hi Daisy

That's certainly given me some food for thought.  I hadn't really extended my search too far outside of the Medway Towns at this point.

The age is about right so it may we worth taking a chance and ordering the death certificate.

Thanks for your help

Hi Daisy

Just wanted to update you on this one.

I ordered the death certificate for the record you found mainly I think to eliminate this one.  The certificate arrived yesterday and although the age isn't quite right this is certainly my Elsie.

I was so lucky as whilst her death was registered by the superintendant registrar at the hospital she was in, it also recorded the name of her father and the fact that she was from Hoo.

I can now start looking into why she was in hospital so far from home!!

Thank you once again for your help in finding Elsie ;D ;D

Which hospital did she die in?

What was the cause of death?

There were hospitals that specialised in specific conditions.

Hi Bearkat

She died in Pembury Isolation hospital and the cause of death was Dyptheria and Cardiac Failure.  I'm trying to find out where the records are likely to be held - I think it will probably be the Centre for Kentish Studies but will send an e-mail over the next few days to confirm this.

Hi Roger

Thanks for your message.

I have no record of Susannah on my tree.  Most of my Fullagars came from the Frinsted area originally although I believe they probably originated from Maidstone but just havent been able to tie any of my ancestors in with the many Fullagars from Maidstone!!

If I come across a link I will of course let you know.

Good luck with your search

Anne-Marie
