Title: Clara McCann - where is she?
Post by: grubheam on Friday 08 January 10 20:22 GMT (UK)
Hi

I am trying to find Clara McCann / MacCann b. 1851 in Holborn. She's daughter of James and Hellen MacCann. I have her on 1861 in Farrington age 10. Then she disappeared from records.

Can you help please?

By 1871 she could have married - have you checked freebmd.

This 1871 entry may be worth following up

Hi
Some time ago you enquired about details of Frederick J Luker on the 1901 census.  I'm interested in this family and wonder if you could contact me regarding him and his family.
My family website is at www.luker.com.au/familyhistory  This will also have my contact details.
Thanks
Glenn

St Andrew Holborn baptism if you did not already have it

She is not with parents in 1871

The Clara marriage in 1881 was to a GLENDENNING.

CaroleW - I am confused - is she Clara Cooper you mean? I used your details RG10 etc and she came up as Clara Cooper on ancestry. Is that her? If it is, I can't find her marriage on freebmd.

Jennifer, I couldn't find Clara Glendenning on census record if my Clara married to Glendenning.

Help please

I checked the image on A******Y and could read the number , so went back to FreeBMD and put in the folio and page number and got the other three names. Then searched in the census for matches. The only thing is in 1891 her birthplace is given as Birlingham, Worcestershire, which does not fit - RG12/506/70/64. She is at St Andrews in 1881 as Clara Maccan, again born Worcester - RG11/340/85/9

She did not marry James Cooper that I can see.

The MacCanns were at Baldwin Gardens in 1851 if you had not found that - Yes the ones Jennifer found.

Do you know she was still in England? Did she emigrate?

1861
13 Fleetham, St Sepulchre
James McCANN, head mar 60, Goldsmith, born Middlesex, London
Helen McCANN, wife mar 49, born ditto
Edwin McCANN, son unm 14, Errand boy, born ditto
next page
Clara McCANN, dau unm 10, Scholar, born ditto

HI Ian,

She was registered in Holborn. The clue to finding her is in the spelling of the name, it seems to be Maccann

Birth registered June Qtr 1851 Holborn

Edwin William Maccann Holborn Dec qtr 1846 ref. 2/124

If you order the cert. it would give you Ellen's maiden name.

A possible death for John Glendenning Mar 1884 Greenwich aged 64.

This may explain why she is a widow so quickly and just allows for the birth of her daughter shown on the 1891 census. Clara in Greenwich in 1891.

Her birthyear and birthplace fitted your profile but there is no James Cooper marriage to a Clara that I can find so it's impossible to say whether she is the right one or not.  I just gave the reference as a possibility

The Glendenning marriage does not appear to be her as -

We are basically back at square one - no trace after 1861

We seem to be losing track of the purpose of this post which is to find Clara after 1861.

Hi, We think this is Clara in 1881 & 1891 census although for she seems to be giving Birmingham Worcestershire as her place of birth?

1871 seems to be evasive, perhaps she is in Birmingham?

Had a look for a Clara born 1849 in Birlingham, Worcester to see if there was one and there was, a Clara JAMES, born 1849. She is there in 1851 and 1861, but not 1871. In 1871 she is a servant in Battle in Sussex.

There is a marriage in Dec qtr 1871, Hastings for a Clara JAMES, and one of the possible grooms is a Charles John McCANN. Charles John McCANN dies Mar qtr 1877 aged 29

Therefore I believe this is the Clara McCANN in St Andrew in 1881 and Clara GLENDENNING in Deptford in 1891 and 1901, and therefore NOT the Clara MacCANN born 1850 in Holborn, daughter of James and Helen/Ellen.

Back to the drawing board.

No sign of a death that I can see either.

If you look at the 1891 census - there is a 16yr old son s/n McCann.  I could not see any way in which this was the right Clara given the diversity of birthplace

Goodness me what a long thread!

Thank you very much for helping me to clearing up on Clara McCann - shame still don't know where she is.

The other information on my McCann family I already got them - thank you anyway.

I am going to re-read the thread again!
