Title: Ellis family Witton / North Walsham, help needed please.
Post by: jensquest on Thursday 07 January 10 19:30 GMT (UK)
Hi there,

Is anyone  researching the Ellis family from Witton / North Walsham?

Im doing a tree for a friend and its this family that I am interested in. I have got the bare bones of his direct line from all the usual sites, and have gone as far back as Tobias c1756,but would love to be able to go back further if possible.

Thank You, Jen  :)

Hello,
I have not found any further information of his birth.
There's a possible link as follows; 1770 marriage Tobias Ellis - Mary Fox at Belaugh, Norfolk, UK. see Family Search, Indexing; I07383 3; GS film 1596069; Item 18 page 2.

Another source Norfolk Transcription Archives, Norfolk, Aylsham District, Belaugh village, by Banns,
Parish Register 1757 - 1891 a Tobias Ellis did not complete his wedding Banns to a Mary Fox.

I believe he may have died in the Smallburgh Work House A Tobias Ellis burial was recorded 21.05.1802 aged 56 years. See Smallburgh Burials Register 1802.
If you find any further info please advise me of it.
Ken.

I had forgotten all about this thread!!  ;)

After doing further research I found, like many who have public trees of the Ellis family that I was tracing half the right branch then the rest were wrong. After a few months of trying to find the right family and drawing blanks, the lovely people on here helped me with a scavenger hunt and discovered that the person who was driving me crazy - Charles Howell Ellis born 1819 Norfolk had actually changed his name from Charles Rayner Howell! He deserted his family in Norfolk and set up home in Wakefield Yorkshire with a new 'wife' and took the name Ellis.

Thank you for the interest in this thread, and good luck with your research

Jen
