I have just found an entry in the Bywell St Peter parish register for my ggg grandfather William Stobbart baptised 19 May 1793 son of Wm and Rachel Stobbart of looks like Rochey-foot. His brother (twin?) on the line above looks like Roacheyfoot. Checking for siblings I found Roachafoot, Rochelfoot, and Rochel Foot. I then went to the Bishop Transcripts and found Rochel Foot, Rochel foot, Rochel-foot, and Roachefoot. Does anyone know the correct name for this place and where it was?

Hi Sue
You can check out its entry in GENUKI here http://www.genuki.bpears.org.uk/NBL/BywellStPeter/

Gary,
I had checked this site before. I must be missing it. Please tell me where it has the correct name of my Rochel Foot or whatever.

Hi Sue
My apologies I thought you were after information on Bywell. That will teach me to drink the first cup of coffee before replying to posts. I have checked every place name beginning with R in my Place Names of Northumberland but nothing even close. Perhaps it was a farm?? I will check some of my other books to see if it gets a mention.

Can't see anything on the Northumberland Farm Index that seems to correspond :(

Hi Jennifer
Nothing at all remotely like it any of the books I have. Even scoured old maps on keys to the past, nothing diddly squat.

I can't see Bywell St Peter in the Bishops's Transcripts - only Bywell St Andrew.
Can you point us to where in the Transcripts you found these entries, please?

Found a reference in Google Books http://www.rootschat.com/links/07t6/

Bywell St Peter index http://www.rootschat.com/links/07t8/
Not that this is helping us work out exactly where it was. But at least we know it was definitely there somewhere ;D

So it could be south of the river ???
I will have another look at keys to the past.

Thanks everyone for all the work you are doing on my behalf.
In the Bishop's Transcripts Bywell begins with Bywell St Andrew and on image 171 goes to Bywell St Peter. Page for 1793 baptism of William is missing but some of his family members are on other pages, for example image 210 sister Margaret.
The farm index is very interesting even if it doesn't have my place on it. I didn't know it existed. So thanks for that also. I'm sure it will come in handy in the future.

I can't yet see anything on the old maps that looks anything like it.
Next time I slide down the hill to the library I'll see if I can find anything in the Local Studies collection that might give a clue.

I have scanned the 1854 map north to south as well as east to west and nothing.
I think everyone will be sliding these next few days Jennifer. A temperature of -4 here was the daytime high.

Brilliant!
I had searched addresses in Bywell St. Peter in 1841, but it didn't show up on there.

Now Redshawfoot in Stocksfield NE43 7RJ

Sue, if you want to see the exact location, go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/intermap/viewer.htm, click on search at the top of the page, and then enter the postcode Peter gave - NE43 7RJ.
This will centre the map on Redshawfoot. You can then look at the older maps by using the drop-down menu at the bottom of the page.

One more question
What do the numbers before Pete's name mean? If they are a reference to something, I'm sorry, but I don't know what.

It's the census reference number. To show where he found the name Rochefoot in the 1841 census.

My family lived on this farm from 1881 to 1924 it started off as Redshawfoot Farm but was corrupted later and became Rochafoot Farm they were the Milburn Family but the farm was taken over by the Dodd family which was the illegitimate sons of Dorothy Milburn
