I have ancestor William Bonney born 1780/81 in Winwick according to 1851 census.
I also have an affiliation order for him prior to his marriage which says he was from Lowton.
A recent contact has said that his parents were Thomas Bonney and Ann Dickonson who married in 1776 at St. Oswald's Winwick, but they have no date of birth for William or names of any siblings and I think may just have picked out a convenient couple to be William's parents.
This marriage checks out on Lancs OPC but I can find no children to this couple.
William's children were all baptised RC.
Unfortunately I cannot get to the Lancs Record Office so any advice on online resources where I can look next would be greatly appreciated

Where were William's children baptised please. Not all RC registers are at the Lancs RO. Is it likely that William was baptised in the same church

Hi,
If it's any nearer to you,
Manchester Library hold copies of the Registers for St Oswald's in Winwick.

Hi lancsann
All William's 9 known children were baptised at Bryn Catholic Chapel in Ashton in Makerfield, the first child was Ellen in 1804, my ancestor William baptised there in August 1807, another and the last known child was Susannah baptised in 1816. On various census all the children give their birthplace as Lowton.
Wliiam senior whose birth I'm looking for actually married in St. John's Preston to a Catherine Harrison in 1803. No idea what he or Catherine were doing there, as in the 1851 census Catherine gives her place of birth as St. Helen's.
To date I have not found Catherine Harrison's birth.
Thanks for the info about St. Oswald's records being held at Manchester Cancan - I'm probably closer to Preston but it is useful to know.
Liverpool Annie - those other Bonney names from St. Oswald's may come in useful if Thomas and Ann Dickonson turn out to be my William's parents, as they could potentially be siblings of William.
Any info may help in the future, and I've even got my filing systems sorted properly now so I don't lose the leads, which I have been known to do in the past!
-
presumably you have looked at Bryn Chapel for William seniors baptism?
As St John's Preston is a Cof E church, I wonder if it was a mixed marriage and they were also married in an RC church. As you probably know RC records often give more info.
-
Hi
Haven't looked at Bryn Chapel records. They do not seem to be on the Lancs OPC site or IGI.
I got William's childrens baptisms from a distant relative. These were actual phtocopies of registers. I assume when she got these she also checked the Chapel records for earlier Bonneys, but then again, you know what they say about assume!
-
Bryn chapel baptism registers in the Lancs RO start at 1776
Do you want a look-up or are you able to get there yourself. Alternatively as you know roughly the year the staff may do a look up for you.

Hi Lancsann
So sorry I didn't respond to your last post. I'm just going through my posts for Jan to enter Completed when I spotted this one.
You must think I'm very rude :-[
If you have time to do a look up in Bryn baptisms at Lancs RO I would be grateful. His name is William Bonney, born 1780 - 1781.
-
It may be a week or three before I can get there again. I have just arrived back home after spending the day there!
Will look for you next time. (It won't be in half term week as we have the grandchildren.)
-
No rush - thank you very much for your offer and I'm very grateful however long it takes.

Had a look at Bryn baptisms today.
I found James Bonney 26-4-1770 sponsors Thos Unsworth & Eliz Wilson and Thomas Bonney 11-7-1784 but no William. Also the register only named the sponsors not the parents!
did you have the baptisms of Williams children? Just jotted down a couple (they were not large registers) Helen (Latin form of Ellen?) 22 Jan (or June - can't read my scribble!)- 1804, William 3 May (not Aug) 1807 and a Mary 25-8-1805
There were a couple of other Bonney parent combinations in the register
let me know if you want any further lookups
-
Hi Lancsann
Thanks so much for doing the look ups. It's interesting that there were Bonneys being baptised there in the 1770 - 1784 period - just the right time for my William even though he wasn't there.
And fancy not naming the parents? very sloppy recording by that priest!
I do have the baptisms of William's children thank you, although you've identified my transcription mistake on William 2 baptism - I've got a photocopy of the record and for some reason I put August instead of May.
Many thanks again for your help
:)

Hi greenpaula,
Which of William Bonney's children are you decended from?
His sister Ellen b1804 is my 2xggrandmother.
I've been in contact with someone who thinks there is a connection to Lytham!! I've not managed to find this yet.
-
William Bonney b 1782 to Thomas & Ellen. St Peters Lytham
Also Wllm b 1776 Lytham. Maybe he was born in Winwick & christened in Lytham.
An Eleanora / Ellen Bonney b 18/8/1783 Lytham married in Winwick.1803.
-
Hi Winifred,
Ellen Bonney's brother William 1807 is my 3 x great grandfather.
I've heard the Lytham connection too, and some trees have it on as fact but I am not convinced. I think Lathom is more likely. I am in touch with another Bonney descendent and we are both still looking.
Regards
Paula

Don't know where Winifred 1 has got to - her PM box is full - but I for one would like to find out what happened to the Halliwells who descended from...

Hi
Sorry I've not been involved with the Bonneys for quite some time. I didn't think I could get any further with them.
Good photo of the grave. Roger & Ellen are my gggrandparents. I am descended from their son Joseph b 1843. What is your connection?
-
Hi Winifred, glad that you're okay etc. :)
I'm from Ellen's brother William's line, and reading your posts above, I am leaning toward William's parents being from the Lytham area. It doesn't make sense for people to travel 30 miles in winter to live in a Parish just to get married.
My interest in the Halliwell's would be just to see how they fared after the originals had passed away, and to possibly add them to my Bonney Family Tree.
