Title: Joseph Wild- Little Dalby and servant Emma Shotter
Post by: vickifperry on Tuesday 05 January 10 12:51 GMT (UK)
Hello,

I am researching Emma Shotter, who lived in Little Dalby, Leicestershire in 1851, working as a servant to Joseph Wild. Emma was born near Chichester, Sussex and before ending up in Leicestershire worked at West Dean House in Sussex and Hatfield House in Hertfordshire.

I haven't been able to trace what happened to her after 1851 and was wondering if anyone had come across her in their own research? I am also interested in Joseph Wild and who he was, as he appeared to have had a large retinue of servants, yet I can't find out anything about him, other than that he was a farmer.

It is a strange census entry.
John Wild and family and a couple of farm servants and a couple of house servants seem to be one household.
Then another household starts with 13 yr old MAria Georgina Hartopp, described as daughter and then several younger siblings, then some adult relations (cousins, mother in law etc) then a governess, then a full household of servants (ladies maids etc,) incl cook Emma Shotter.

I would say that the parents, the actual head of this h/h are away, leaving the children in the charge of the governess and older relations. But the census enumerator has not designated anyone else to be head, just started the list with the eldest daughter and worked through the other rellies and then the servants in the usual way.

I would therefore guess that Emma does not work for John Wild at all, but for the Hartopps in the Big House.

Interesting - 1861 is the same. The household starts with Maria Georgina Hartopp, daughter now of course aged 23.
The address is at least more defined - Dalby Parva Hall, and I see the Cook is now Ann someone, so Emma Shotter has moved on.

Thank you! I thought that it was a bit odd that Mr Wild had so many servants  ;)

I wonder what happened to her. I can't find a marriage or a death, nor an entry on the '61 census.

Best wishes,

Vicki

Out of interest 1871 census for Little Dalby Hall shows the Head as Edward B Hartopp, widower age 64, landowner, bn London.
Again a large household of relations and full quota of servants! (No Emma, though)

I haven't looked at the entry so don't know Emmas age on the 51 - could she have married?
