Title: Help! Trying out Family Historian 4..but have a problem
Post by: tabily on Tuesday 05 January 10 10:28 GMT (UK)
Hi everyone..

I am trying the 30day free trial for Family Historian 4.  I have loaded it onto my computer and exported my FTM V 16 into it... No problems... Although none of my pictures etc went with it,  only the data.  So, I have put in some pictures to see show it works.

I loaded it onto my laptop as well as I am pretty sure I am going to buy it and I constantly work on both computers exporting back and forth...However, I tried a file export and a back up then restore, but my photos won't go across.  They just come up as blank squares and when I click on them in the multimedia window it says "unable to load object.error on file open"

Any ideas?
help?
cheers
Tabily

Hi
I have been using Family Historian for some time.  I would try posting on the FHU mailing list or going to the FHUG site where you will receive help from the wonderful experts.

Photographs are not embedded, so if the tree is moved the link is broken. The only thing to do is re-link them.

If you keep the folder etc structure the same and the file paths the same on both machines, does that work?

I haven't done that, but it's worth trying, it might work.
But I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't ;D

It's what I've had to do with other FH software.... also it helps if you can originally link it with a relative path rather than an absolute one ie relative to the folder the main database is in....

Hi,

I use FH 4 and it does the trick for me ... their after sales support is a bit odd to say the least the company wants to be anonomous BUT if you sign up for the mail list here

http://www.family-historian.co.uk/community/fhu

Then a nice lady called Jane jumps on just about every question you might ask - sure she will be able to help with your question.

Regards

Thanks everyone for your ideas..I will email Jane..Some of their answers on that site get a bit technical..

I am trying to work out if I am just stupid..

but one question to FH4 users...If you do the back up on your machine..and it asks you if you want to see the backup... If you say yes does all the media come up as well?  I did that and no media comes up  in the backed up version just a white box with a cross.
Is this what is supposed to happen?  If so, how do I reload the pictures..I tried double clicking etc?

thanks for your patience

*!  I Believe  !*

That the backup just deals with a GEDCOM format data file - you would need to manually take a copy of the working folder as well - that's the folder thats called the name of your project with an extension .fh_data inside which is a Media and aSettings folder.

The contenets of these fodlers basicaly make up the system.

When your asked to see the backup it's showing you the GEDCOM file and NOT the mediain this folder system - Persoanlly I just backup the whole folder to another drive and be done with it.

Importing and exporting to other programs I've not tried and suspect will be fraught with danger/difficulties !!

Join the forum and ask your questions - Jane is a close to a person who works for the company but will not admit to it that I've seen and I'm sure will help you out.

Regards

PS I'm sure your not stupid  :)

Thanks for that Church123.  I moved the media file onto my laptop and fiddled with it a bit..then got distracted by my kids...came back later and there were pictures there..so maybe it takes longer than an instant!!
although in the show all media bit..I just get white squares and if i double click they are there...
ANYWAY...I do have hope now I can alternate between my computer and laptop..it was so easy in FTM 16..I just exported and it was all there!!
I will keep at it..
