Hi
From google maps it seems to be on the A4047 between Merthyr Tydfil and Abergavenny - north of Newport & Cardiff
You could also try this

Hi
Beaufort is now part of Ebbw Vale in Gwent. A few miles north of Ebbw Vale town centre. It was originally part of Breconshire but bondary changes brought it into Monmoutshire and then later to Blaenaugwent.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

Hi,
this may be mis-leading for you, but my ancestors lived at Beaufort Square, Llangattock, Nr Crickhowell, Breconshire.
On the census record it just says Beaufort.
Hope I'm not leading you astray,
Cheers,
Rob

Hi all
Llangattock is on the north side of the mountain, whilst Beaufort is on the southern edge. They're not far apart and are joined by a mountain road which has the most spectacular scenery - though I suspect it would be a bit hazardous in the current climate! There are numerous remains of quarrying and various other industrial workings on the mountain so it is likely that people who worked there lived both sides of the mountain.

Hi thanks for all of your replys. On the the census all it says is Beaufort Breconshire. So i think this could be a bit of a nightmare.Cheers Lee.

Shouldn't be a major problem, Lee. Beaufort is the village and although it is now in Blaenau Gwent, it used to be in Breconshire. Various county/local authority boundary changes over the years are the reason for this. But it is quite easy to identify the place of Beaufort, which is still the same, regardless of which county it is in at any particular time!

Hi Lee,
the census pages showing my Ggrandfather show him born; Beaufort, Breconshire. I knew of Beaufort, Ebbw Vale and at first assumed this is where he was born.
However when I eventually obtained birth cert, it shows Beaufort Square, district of Llangattock. I am convinced that this is not Beaufort, Ebbw Vale.
I haven't been to find Beaufort Sq yet, but Google map shows Beaufort Ave forming three sides of a rectangle in Llangattock town / village, (with Park Drive being the fourth side).
Maybe someone can pinpoint Beaufort Sq for me or prove me wrong.
For info there is also a Beaufort Street in Crickhowell, part of the main road (A40).
Best wishes,
Rob

Hi Lee
Is it possible you could let me know what census and the references are that you get Beaufort Square from please. Having a look at the original census information might be useful.
Cheers

Ian,
On the 1841 census Beaufort Square is shown under ED7; HO107/1366/14 Folio 42-44, Pages 19-23.
There appear to be 21 Households.
Enumerators Schedule also mentions Beaufort Square.
The 1861 census simply shows 'Square'. ED8 this time, and it is associated with Beaufort Ironworks.
This time there appear to be just 16 Households.
RG9/421844/p31-34
Hope this helps to nail it down; I haven't been scouting yet, but if this weather keeps up, I will have to find the time.
Cheers,
Rob

Hi Rob
I have looked at the 1861 Census, at the schedule and the streets and I have no doubt that the area you are looking for is in Beaufort Ebbw Vale. Although most of the original streets have been knocked down the area that this centres around is the Waungoch district of Beaufort. The arrangement of some of the streets here are strange but down to the fact that they were built along a jig saw of tram lines. I think it would be more profitable for you to check this area out for Beaufort Square.
The link below doesn't mention Beaufort Square but does discuss the Waungoch district. It may be of interest.

Hope you find what your looking for.
All the best and happy hunting

Thanks Ian,
that's pretty decisive then; Beaufort Sq is in Beaufort, Ebbw Vale.
I guess it will not exist now, but I'll go and have a wander around.
Maybe I'l be able to find a photo in the library.
Thanks for the link.
Best wishes,
Rob

Hi Rob
If you are going to make enquiries, the Library in Tredegar (next to the town clock) is supposed to be the centre for local history and genealogy. Not been there myself but I'm told it's very good.
Hope you find what you are looking for and happy hunting
