Post by: maidmarianoops on Monday 04 January 10 08:58 GMT (UK)

sylvia

                       LILI ET SON CHIEN

O I LA DOUCEUR CALME DES BETES
POUR CES BLONDES PETITES TETES

SOUHAITONS UN NOVEAU MEDOR

POUR TOUTE LILI QUI S'ENDORT

Is it from this postcard?

http://cgi.ebay.com/LILI-ET-SON-CHIEN_W0QQitemZ280440886256QQcmdZViewItemQQptZFR_JG_Collections_Cartes_postales?hash=item414b9453f0
There's a machine translation there but it doesn't make too much sense!

Médor is a generic francophone dog name (like Rover )

So maybe it's something like this:

Lili and her dog

Oh the gentle calm of animals !
for all the Lili(s) who fall asleep,
for these little fair heads
let's wish for a new dog
.

It's one of a series of postcards featuring Lili and "Medor". Here's another one:

"douceur calme" would translate better as calm softness or sweetness...calm is the adjective here.

Cheers,
China

Isn't the whole ~ seeming ~ nature of that card a little macabre?

I wonder if it's something to do with a series, portraying a 'known' story?

Apparently it's dated 1922.
