Happy New Year to everyone.
Does anyone know where Haughton lane/ Haughton back lane was in
Darlington in 1911? Some of my ancestors lived there acccording to the census
of that year. I think it was in Harrowgate Hill ward. Does it still exist ? I believe
the house was quite big', according to the census it had seven rooms.
thanks

Hello Annie, and a Happy New Year to you, too.
Whinfield Road is shown as Back Lane in maps of that era, and it runs from Harrowgate Hill to Haughton le Skerne. Most of it would be in Haughton, so I suspect your house would be near to the Salters Lane end, in the vicinity of Darlington Golf Club.
Do you have any other clues?

Colin

Thanks Colin thats helped me.
I have checked the census again and on it 139 is Glebe Farm but there are
about six houses in the 'back lane'. 144 is a house and maket garden owned
by a Mr Knaggs. 140- 146 are the ones in the back lane.
Next on the census is glebe road. Hopefully this will help.
Do you know how long the golf club has been there?

Darlington Golf Club moved to Haughton in 1915 and is still there today. 'Glebe' is church land.

Hello both,
I thought I had your houses pin-pointed because of Glebe Road and the market garden. I used to live in Saltersgate Road, which is the next one to Glebe Road. Between me and the main-line railway there was a smallholding with a much older house. Then I had another look at the old maps and now I'm not so sure. Glebe Road leads to what was Glebe Farm (beyond that was a Golf Club, but not in the same location as the present Darlington Golf Club). Glebe Road runs off Salters Lane not the Back Lane, then I noticed another Glebe Farm which was on the Back Lane (they don't like to make things too easy for us, do they?) there weren't many other houses around so perhaps 140-146 were all associated with Glebe Farm.
The location is now housing which I think is Lyonette Road.
I don't know if the enumerator's instructions are available for 1911, but they might help.

Colin

Yes they are but I'm not sure if FindMyPast have got them all loaded yet. www.1911.co.uk have had them for a while.
If you look at the original image for the relevant entry then look near the top of the page, you can click on the relevant Enumerators book images. I think it's free once you've paid for the original image

Hi,
Thanks everyone for your replies.
Yes Colin I agree it isn't easy at all.
However your theory about the Saltersgate road area seems likely.
I looked at the census again and after listing the backlane houses it then
continues with 1 Glebe road, which is Saltersgate end
Strangely the first listing before the backlane houses is "the
smallpox hospital" which is empty. does anyone know anything about this
building?

Hi Annie,
If your Glebe Farm was between the Back Lane houses then that would tend to rule out the Glebe Road one.
I haven't come across the Smallpox Hospital. There was an Isolation Hospital for Infectious Diseases in Hundens Lane, opposite the Workhouse on Yarm Road, but it's a fair distance from Back Lane. I wonder if it might be Sparrow Hall which was on the Back Lane. I'll try and give the library a ring and see if they know anything about it.

Hi Annie,
As usual, the library was very helpful, but the smallpox hospital is a long way from the back lane. It was situated in what is now the grounds of Eastbourne School not too far from Hundens Hospital.
The smallpox hospital appears on a 1919 map but not on an 1890's map, so I'm wondering if there might have been a temporary one in use before that one was built. If you have access to the enumerators instructions, as outlined by Linda, then it would be worthwhile checking them. It should describe the route to be taken.
