Title: Confused...are there two places called 'Ballinamore' in County Leitrim?
Post by: PabloC on Saturday 02 January 10 19:32 GMT (UK)
Hi,

Might anyone be able to clarify whether there are two places called 'Ballinamore' in County Leitrim?

My Great, great grandfather's military service record says that he was born in the 'Parish of Ballinamore, in or near the town of Leitrim, in the County of Leitrim' (Bold text indicates the handwritten elements of the service record).

Now, I can see that there's a town called Ballinamore, in the parish of Outeragh, however, this is almost 25 kilometres north east of the town of Leitrim.

Yet, there would appear to be references to a place called Ballinamore much closer to the town of Leitrim, which is located right on the border of Co. Leitrim and Co. Roscommon adjacent to the 'Ballinamore and Ballyconnell Canal, very close to 'Carrick On Shannon'.

So...would anyone agree that it's likely to be this second place, even though it doesn't appear to feature in the Griffith's Valuatio searches...the nearest placename being classed as the 'Road to Ballinamore'?

Any assistance would be appreciated thanks!!

Paul

The church in Leitrim is in the parish of Kiltoghert, but can ask the priest tomorrow morning!

Leitrim town is actually called Leitrim Village

Hi Hallmark,

That would be much appreciated thanks.  :)

Unfortunately, the service record is the only source of information we have that indicates his place of origin, although it's a detailed one, and I don't have any reason to doubt its validity.

Cheers

Paul

Names and dates would have been helpful.
Be aware that most old records are in Civil parishes. The only records in Catholic parishes are baptisms and church marriages.
In County Leitrim there is a town named Ballinamore in Bredagh townland, Carrigallen Civil parish. It is in Oughteragh Catholic parish.
There is a Registrar’s District named Ballinamore.
There is a District Electoral Division named Ballinamore.

Well if the priest doesn't know then I give up! Will let you know what he understands about the wording you have! Parish boundaries may have been moved but Ballinamore is quite far away. Carrick on Shannon is 5km west from Leitrim Village and the river is the county division with Roscommon.

Leitrim Village is very hard to figure out as most of the older properties don't have deeds and nobody actually knows who owns them, was talking to someone there last night who had a deed signed in 1790...he wanted to transfer the property to his son and had to prove that the person who signed it in 1790 was actually dead!

It took him over 3 years to find where the person was buried which was in Sligo...strange but true!

Thanks again Hallmark.

The ancestor in question goes by the name of John Clisham.

I hadn't considered the fact that parish boundaries may have shifted actually...

As can be seen, I've attached a copy of the relevant section of John's service record detailing his place of origin.

Regards
