Title: Protestant Cemetary Castlerea
Post by: TomFE on Saturday 02 January 10 01:35 GMT (UK)
Does anyone have access to the old Protestamt Cemetery in Castlerea? I understand its quite overgrown. I am looking for the graves of William Wilkinson and Mary Ann Wilkinson nee Smiley, he born 1858 in Yorkshire England, she in 1861 in Ballindrimlea, Roscommon. Both died early part of 20th century prior to about 1830 is my guess. Many thanks, and Happy New Year

Be aware that there are very few headstones in old graveyards. Check the Roscommon County Council Graveyard website to ensure records exist before paying for research.
http://www.roscommoncoco.ie/burialgrounds/search.aspx then click “list all Burial Grounds”
The use of large family plots is common, with different branches of family buried in corners. The only inscription may be the family name e.g. “Daly” on one side of the large plot.
Graves are reused after a number of years.

Do you know the name of the Church/Cemetery where your folk are buried?

Cheers

Hi,

I did research a few years back on the Smiley/Wilkinson family which I sent to a family member in N. Ireland.  Ring any bells with you perhaps?  I still have copies of the stuff put away.  The graveyard is very overgrown and neglected and seldom used now.
I know the location of the homestead.

I have a copy of hand drawn sketch of the  protestant graveyard in Castlerea . I found it in roscommon county library. It has the location of a grave marked "Wilkinson" on it . I live in Ballindrimly Castlerea [ 4 generations ]. My elderly father tells me that  he knew a Wilkinson family who lived near to us .This would have been c 1935-45. It seems a man from that family worked as a sawyer in Connolly Bros. Hardware shop in Castlerea. The house was purchased by The Quinn Family who still own and live in it. Seamus Quinn lives there with his mother . Hope this is of some help . PC

I have a few ancestors buried there  too. George Reynolds (b 19808) was buried there in 1848. I really can't track much on him. He lived in Tarmon (termonmore?). His wife was Elizabeth. He supposedly married above his station. On a subscription list for the Castlerea Relief Fund in 1835 he was listed as Mr. Geo Reynolds.  (I have the list that has a lot of the key families but can't upload it to this site. I didn't see Wilkinson on it)

His son William Reynolds was born in 1840 and baptized in Holy Trinity.  He married Margaret Cornwall in 1871 in Kiltullagh. They lived in Creggaslin up to his death in 1889 and most of the children were baptized in Holly Trinity as well. Other names include Cotton and Glover.

After William died my grandfather was raised by relatives. An aunt paid for an apprenticeship with Connolly Brothers and he is shown living with them in the 1901 census. He emigrated to NY in 1906.

If there is any way to get a scanned copy of the sketch, it would be appreciated.

If you let me have your e-mail address I will scan that sketch map for you .  Unfortunately I can tell you that the Reynolds name is not on this sketch . However  Cornwall , Cotton &  Glover appears . The Cornwall family still live in this area and I believe they have a connection with the Killtullagh area near Ballinlough .

Thanks for the information and the offer. If anyone comes across this, the Cornwall family started in Kilkeevin. I understand that Mathias Cornwall (born around 1733) relocated from Lavally Galway. He is listed in the 1749 Elphin Census as a Weaver. His wife was Elinor and they had three children under 14.

In any case, this brings me to the minimum three posts to participate in PM. lol

Hi,

I don't suppose there are any Hussey burials on that sketch?  My 2nd great grand uncle Edward F Hussey was stationed there with the R.I.C. between 1845-1861 and there are a number children of his for whom there are baptismal entries in the Kilkeevan records but no further trace of.  Thought perhaps they may have died in infancy and been buried there?

Oh, I'm also interested in the name Hawthorn/e, although I know there are a number of families of that name in the area.

Thanks,

Simon

Hi Simon, I'm a newby on this site but have read a number of your threads relating to the Hussey Clan and though from County Galway now live in Perth WA the same as Ted Hussey with whom your already in contact.
I'm interested in the Hussey Clan from around the Castlerea area, parish of Kiltullagh to be exact. Not sure if it's the same branch as yours but do you have much info on the RC's around there, where they might have originated (I suspect Fermanagh perhaps from the Ulster Plantation) and are there docs where I could check that out. I know my Grandfather was Peter born 1883 and his parents were Patrick Hussey or Hussy and Bridget Cottle but it's hard to nail any links prior to the 1860's. I also know a bunch of the clan went to South Manchester UK in probably the late 19th and early 20th century and I'm more than likely related to a couple of well known wrestlers "Jumping Jim Hussey" and Mark Hussey aka "Rollerball Rocco" but again cant quite nail the link even after going through Irish & UK Census for 1901 & 1911.
Can you help?

Peter Hussey
