Title: Geo Marshall b1813 Headley, Hampshire
Post by: adamthomas on Friday 01 January 10 21:54 GMT (UK)
Hi Everyone

Getting a bit confused with one of my relatives and wondered if anyone is able to shed any light.

I have Geo Marshall b1813 in Headley. I understand he married a Mary Murrell (nee Knowles) in 1848 in Farnborough. She already had a daughter Mary Ann who took the surname Marshall. I therefore believe Mary Knowles must have married Mr Murrell who fathered Mary Ann? (i cant seem to find any info). I also understand that when Geo and Mary married, he was listed as a widower, but again i cant find an earlier marriage. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Geo was living in Harting, Sussex on the 1871 census i believe.

In 1851 William KNOWLES is at a place called Lambolds, in Empshott, with his wife and family. He is an ag lab and also the Parish Clerk. Lambolds is next door to the Vicarage. One of William's daughters is Mary aged 20 born Empshott. There is also a grand daughter Mary Ann KNOWLES in the same household aged 1 or 4 m, born Empshott, so it looks like Mary KNOWLES was not married to George until after 1851, probably closer to 1856.

1871

Geo MARSHALL, head mar 58, Shepherd, born Hampshire, Headley
Mary MARSHALL, wife mar 40, Schoolmistress, born Hampshire, Empshott

Walter MARSHALL, son 9, Scholar, born ditto
John MARSHALL, son 7, Scholar, born Sussex, Harting
Jane MARSHALL, dau 2, born ditto
RG10/1122/50/16

George has died between 1871 and 1881 as Mary is still there in 1881 and 1891.

From FreeBMD
Mary Ann KNOWLES birth, Dec qtr 1850, Petersfield, 7 134. Petersfield covers Empshott.

Have you got the two Marys confused. He married Mary MURRELL. She has died and then he married Mary KNOWLES, where he would have been listed as a widower.

Just found it.

George MARSHALL married Mary KNOWLES, Mar qtr 1856, Petersfield, 2c 177.

FreeBMD has him as Feorge MARSHALL, which obviously appears to be a typo. Found it by looking for her instead.

From the IGI extracted
George MARSHALL married Mary KNOWLES, 29 Mar 1856, Empshott. His father John MARSHALL, her father William KNOWLES.

Wondered about the connection with Jane myself. She looks to have died Dec qtr 1852, Farnborough, which covers Headley. What would have happened to their children, unless they were old enough to have left home by the time George married Mary.

George MARSHALL married Jane TELLETT, 12 Oct 1833, Headley, IGI extracted

Hi adamthomas,

It looks like Mary Ann Knowles (she was only named as Marshall on a census return - which doesn't really prove anything) was illegitimate -so you may not discover who her father is.

Where does the name Mary Murrell come from???

The children on 1841 census with George Marshall and Jane are not all necessarily their children as no relationships are given on 1841 census.

1851 census gives george as their son and he would have left home by 1861

I'll look for him shortly

I think I have discovered where you went wrong.
Did you think the marriage in 1848 Farnborough district was George Marshall to Mary Murrell???

If you look at the names on the same page they are
George marshall
George Skeate
James Bajent
John Cobbbett
mary Murrell
Eleanor Antrobus
Louisa Harmsworth
Sarah Elizabeth parke

It seemsd this George marshall (b farnborough) married Sarah Elizabeth parke (b Yately)

so this is not "your" George

that makes more sense! thanks. i was wondering where i had Murrell from, it now seems like George married Jane and then had 3 children, he then married Mary Knowles who already had a daughter Mary Ann outside of marriage.

George Marshall bapt 21 Feb 1813 married Charlotte Aldred 13 Oct 1835.  He is my 3 X Gt Grandfather. We know it was this George as his abode is the same as Sister Harriett .He was convicted 18 Oct 1847 at Winchester for two thefts of Wheat and sentence to 7 years Transportation. He arrived in Van Dieman'S Land & Norfolk Island in 1850 and that is where he remained dying in Hobart 03 Sep 1880 of cancer. His Wife Charlotte bigamously married Edward Shrubb some 15 years her junior in Farnborough Register Office 17 Nov 1866. We Know it is this George from the Transportation papers which list's his wife as Charlotte, and siblings Thomas, William & Richard and Sisters Harriet, Lucy, Mary & A.N. Other (Unreadable). It is interesting that he list's a brother's as William. From the list of siblings we can tell his Parents are John & Anne, however there were 2 John Marshall's of Headley at that time,  both married to Anne's, One is Anne Spooner, the other was not married in Headley and maiden name remains a mystery. Neither John though baptised a son William, however Anne Spooner had a baseborn son William one year before she married a John Marshall. As this was before civil registration none of us Marshall descendants from a John & Anne. will ever know for sure which family they came down from :-)
