I have traced back to John Galvin who arrived in Melbourne, November 1852 on the ship "Severn" (I think that this is the correct person). I cannot find any evidence of where he was from or of his family. His eldest son was born in St Kilda 1854, (this was recorded in a family bible some years latter) but no record was lodge with BDM. His wifes name was Mary McNichol. Not sure if they were married as there is no record.
Thanks

I can't see any reference to the immigration of John Galvin. Did he arrive in Melbourne? Do you know if he was ans assisted immigrant or unassisted?
I will be at the ANL next week and am happy to look up the fiche/film if we can find a reference.

Hello checking the birth rego as R usually means a duplicate registration:
I found as Daizi did:
Charles Frederick Galvin parents John Galvin and MAry McNichol #11967R 1860 St Kilda
then:
Charles Frederick McNichol mother MAry McNichol #11967R 1860 St Kilda
and more strangely:
Charles Frederick MORRISON mother Mary McNicholl #11967R 1860 St Kilda
So some good reasons for perhaps purchsing at least on if not all of these certificates ::)
good luck

Funeral notice for John GALVIN.
The Wills Index at PROV has date of death 22 Sep 1867, the burial record at St Kilda Cemetery has the date of service 23 Sep 1967, funeral notice 24th Sep 1967, and the MI states he died 26 Sep 1867.
Jenn your link to PROV Wills Index does not appear to be working...well for me.

A copy of the 1860 birth cert for Charles is also there - putative father John Galvin, General Dealer, 37, born London, England, mother Mary Morrison, formerly McNichol, 27, born Glasgow, Scotland. Parents not married.
Details on the death index appear to contradict John's place of birth, but I would believe the birth cert before anything else. Perhaps his family was from Kerry, but he was born in London.
The "Severn" arrival in 1852 simply says John Galvin, aged 25, Clerk, English (out of a choice of English, Scottish or Irish) The age given on the online indexes is incorrect.
On a tangent - there is a marriage for a Mary McNichol (aged 20) and John Morrison (aged 28) (extracted) at Paisley in Renfrewshire on 14 May 1852, and an immigration record for a couple by this name and with the same ages arriving at Melbourne on the "Wanata" in Oct 1852. Perhaps John Galvin and Mary did not marry because one of them was not free to do so.

A BIG thankyou to you all for your help. I do have a copy of the B&D for Charles Galvin and I do believe that the union between May and John was a little bit cloudy. For this is the only child to have a registered birth and then to have the father stated as "putative" under his own signature. And also to state the mother as Mary Morrison. Latter death certs. show her as Galvin nee McNichol from Scotland
I think Debra has hit the nail on the head. I could not find anything on Mary Morrison or a spouse.
I have looked at the Rates Book @PROV for the house in Octavia St St Kilda (which by the way is pronounced as written - there is no saint) and it shows that the property changed from John Galvin to Mary Galvin after Johns death in 1867.
My father worked with his father for 40 years and yet my father was told very little about his fathers family so it is possible that my grand father learnt from a young age not inquire about or talk about earlier generations, hence little was passed on.
It would be interesting to discover what became of John Morrison???
Thank you all again and have a wonderfull New Year
P.S. All this makes us apprreciate what a wonderfull time we live in
Just got your latest reply Cando....gosh.. the plot thickens

I have been trawling the death records trying to match up a death for John MORRISON - hopefully his age at marriage was correct.

Hi Cando
I have just tried BDM for that birth cert but it comes up a blank

I am not sure what you mean by 'a blank'.

Hi cando
I have finally found the birth certificate. Thanks
Gosh ... it looks like our family has the wrong name. Wow is that going to make a few surprises.....
The birth date is exactly that shown in the family bible written in his own hand.
Thanks so much for your help. I have to sit down and ponder over all this again and look for the links to the other children.

What do you mean "our family has the wrong name"? Who was the informant on the birth registration?
Do you have John GALVIN's death certificate?
Who was the informant?
Was Mary mentioned as his wife?
Were the children named as issue of the 'relationship' and was Alfred John included?
Cheers

Hello all;
Wrong Name >:( Should it have been Morrison all along?
Did John Morrison adpot the name John Galvin here in Australia?
A coincidence perhaps but her third husband was also a John >:(
Have you noticed that Mary & John CREFT had a son John Arthur Pollard Creft born 1875 in CAST #7652 :) died aged 7 weeks same place 1875 #6945
There also a duplicate registration for their marriage one 1868(109X1869) the other 1869 (109)
regards

GalvinClear is only giving us information which was entered in the family bible by John GALVIN.
The reason I asked who was the informant on the 1854 birth of Alfred John [I am hoping it is John MORRISON] then GalvinClear will be able to compare the signatures with the signature on the Will, ie if he has downloaded it from PROV and of course he has John G's writing in the family bible.
There are many reasons for registrations being amended with the R and/or cross referenced. I have a couple in my family where incorrect information was entered by the priest on the civil registration and the parish record was correct. Registrars also made errors.
John is a rather commonly occurring name ::) ::) ::)
