Title: Someone pinched my desktop
Post by: Indaloman on Wednesday 30 December 09 20:09 GMT (UK)
Despite having an medium sized UPS my PC has crashed several times today due to power cuts.

Now I cannot restore my desktop. I have tried using My Computer/Display to no avail.

Clicking onto restore my desktop, I get the attached error message.  :'(HELP PLEASE

I'm not too sure why Internet Explorer is involved in restoring your desktop.  I've just opened my desktop.htt file and after a couple of warnings about ActiveX it displayed a picture of my wallpaper.

You could try booting into safe mode and selecting Last Known Good if nothing else is working.

Hi Downside

After tearing hair out yesterday I booted up this morning and all is well

Happy New Year

If that comes back, you should try doing a "Repair install" of Windows.
It fixed this kind of pesky problems.

I would not attempt a Repair/Install of Windows as this is not specifically a Windows problem.  It seems to be an Internet Explorer problem and if that is the case then you can try upgrading or rolling it back to a previous version in order to fix it or get another browser.

A repair as in, booting from a Windows installation disk and going into the Console screen and running repair is a fairly drastic solution and should only be attempted if all other solutions have failed.  Usually it will remove your registry and many other files plus Windows Updates so it is almost a re-installation of Windows.

Hi Downside

I hope Willmington is a little frost free now! Its a freezing 15ºC here!

Once again, after several power cuts, I again had the same error message, and again, after several attempts to restore my desktop, I shut down, booted up the next morning, and again all was well. Its just strange that it happens, it must be the Spanish electricity ;D

Thanks for your input
