I have a Catherine Mulrainey b1820 -d 28th Dec 1881 married a James Thomas Routh in 1844. Catherine was born in Bloomsbury, London and died in Islington.
On their wedding certificate, I have her father entered has John Mulrainey ( Plumber ).
I'm struggling to find out anything about John Mulrainey. I believe the surname changed around the mid 1800's. I want ( if possible) to establish if there are any Irish roots, but I need to find out a little more about Catherines earlier relatives.
Any information about the above Mulrainey's would really be of help.

Hi
On censuses Catherine consistently gives St Giles (St Giles in the Fields) as her place of birth. The LMA holds microfilmed copies of the St Giles in the Fields registers (registers not deposited so will not be part of the Ancestry digitalisation project). That is only of relevance of course if Catherine was Anglican. If she was Catholic then that is much more difficult, because Catholic churches rarely deposit their records in county record offices. Did Catherine marry in a Catholic church?

There is a 40 year old John, born in Ireland, in St. Giles in the Fields in 1841. He doesn't appear to be with any family. Could be Catherines father. :)

Ancestry have him transcribed as Mubrency

The marriage certificate reads - The Parish Church in the parish of St John the Evangelist ( unreadable comment ) in the county of Middlesex. I'm fairly sure this is an Anglican church.

I've got this census entry and have been mulling ( excuse the pun ) over it for some time as a good possibility. If I could find Catherine on the 1841 census then it might pinpoint it a little better.

Hi
Since it was standard for working class girls to begin their working lives usually around 12/13 or younger and that working life particularly in London, was commonly as a servant, then by the age of about 21 which was Catherine's age at the time of the 1841 census the chances that she was living at home are unfortunately much slimmer.
Adult ages, those over 15, were usually rounded down to the nearest 5 on the 1841 census.
No death registered in St Giles registration district between 1841-1851 of a John Mul(*)

I have a few possible entry's for Catherine on the 1841 census. But the spelling variants and transcription accuracy are making things a tad harder then normal.
I have presumed she was in service, but she did change her name to Rainy at some point prior to her marriage in 1844.
She may have had a sister called Ellen & her mother may have been called Mary ( 1851 census Marylebone district HO107 1493 ). The address on this census matchs another I have for Catherine at some point.
Its speculative, but all I have at present.

I think this may be possible. I am researching my Routh line of Islington via James Routh b 1848, father to my ancestor Alice Routh b. 1871. All born in Islington with rumors of coming from Ireland. I have not yet uncovered the Irish part as of yet.
If I am on the right track, this James Routh's father was James Routh b 1819. His wife is listed as Catharine b. 1820 (no maiden name listed). Their children would be:
Catharine b 1846
James b 1848
Ellen b 1850
Henry b 1852
Charlotte b 1854
Mary Ann Charlotte b 1855
This information I have been cross checking with the mormon files, ancestry.com, and findmypastuk.
I am still working on all the details, as much information is unknown about our Routh family.
I will try to help you by keeping an eye out for Mulrainey in Islington or Ireland.

You'll have to forgive me,but this was an old post, so I had to double check what I had. I have pretty much all I need on the Rouths, its Catherine and her Father ( Irish roots ) that I was stuck on. The Rouths go back to Thirsk in North Yorkshire back in the 1720's
But the census info below may help you. I have all the BDM certs and the odd picture
