Title: Edinburgh Poorhouse
Post by: JackyF on Tuesday 29 December 09 23:04 GMT (UK)
I've got some ancestors in the St Cuthbert's /Craigleith Poorhouse around about 1890-1910.  I understand that the records were destroyed some time ago but can anyone tell me where inmates would have been buried?

Presumably funerals would have been as cheap as possible and so would probably have been in common ground but would all inmates have been buried in the same place? If so where?

Dean Cemetery (previously shown as Edinburgh Western Cemetery on the maps) is not far away and there is also a cemetery at Comely Bank.  Neither would have been far awy.

Thanks Nell,

The burial I'm looking for is in 1893. I've already asked Mortonhall (without success obviously) so I presume that covers Comely Bank although Dean Cemetery, which is private and opened in 1845, is a possibility I haven't tried yet.

I think Warriston Cemetery opened in the mid 1840's and Warriston crematorium about 1930. These two places are not far from Comely Bank. Either of these places may have an office although they do belong to the Edinburgh city council.   :)
