Hi
My Gt Gt grandfather (born 1840) and Gt Gt Gt grandfather (born 1807) both Thomas Taggart, who lived in Liverpool both claim to be Shipwrights. Are there any registers which list the names of shipwrights in liverpool and might give me more details about them.
To call yourself a Shipwright did you have to do some sort of apprenticeship and get papers or did people just call themselves it.
Any information much appreciated.
Thank you Atticus

Have you tried the maritime museum? They were very helpful when i tried to find information about a ship my grandfather sailed on and have many archives.

Hi
Thank you for your reply.
Do you have to go in person or can you send a written request, as I live a long way away now.
Thanks Atticus

They would have to have served an apprenticeship as a shipwright was a very skilled job. See http://www.wcml.org.uk/contents/trade-unions/shipwrights/shipwrights/

Hi a little info,
Shipbuilding is the construction of ships. It normally takes place in a specialized facility known as a shipyard. Shipbuilders, also called shipwrights, follow a specialized occupation that traces its roots to before recorded history.

Hi Celia
I saw that earlier and as far as I know there was no John in the family at that date (I could always be wrong). His father was William and no brother called John, I have no idea what his occupation was yet. Thomas did have a son called John but not born
until 1845.
Thank you Atticus
Will reply on post topic.
