Title: Henry and Alice DANIEL or DANIELS & Dau. Jane Ann b. 1875 All born Cheshire, UK.
Post by: knittree on Saturday 26 December 09 23:34 GMT (UK)
Hello

Henry Daniel (sometimes spelt Daniels) married my great grandmother's sister Alice ASPIN in registered Sept 1868 Stockport, Cheshire = surnames Daniels and ASPEN.

They had a daughter Jane Ann born Hazel Grove, Birth reg. March Qu 1875 Stockport (Cheshire England).

Henry was born 14 April 1846 Bosden (A parish which later formed part of Hazel Grove, Cheshire, ).  Sometimes he puts Norbury parish which adjoins Bosden.

Alice was born 1845 in Poynton,  Cheshire.  Her birth was registered as Alice but surname spelt HASPIN = Registered Macclesfield, Cheshire 1845.

Now the complicated bit.

Alice's family came from Blackburn/Over Darwen where the traditional spelling of the surname there was ASPDEN.  Neither Thomas or his wife Ann nee Hargraves/Hargreaves could read or write.  Their childrens births were each registered with different spelled surnames.   ASPDEN   HASPIN   ASPIN and ASPEN.

I have Henry, Alice and Jane in Hazel Grove, Stockport on 1881 census.   Henry was a coalminer all his working life as was Thomas ASPDEN/ASPIN his father-in-law.

The family rumour is that Alice tried to adopt my grandmother Alice Ann Taylor b. 1886 (eldest daughter of her younger sister Betty Taylor nee ASPEN born in 1859) as she was emigrating with her husband and she wanted to take Alice with her.  We did not know where they were emigrating.

I can find nothing after 1881 in the UK for Henry, Alice and Jane.

I did once find details of Henry and Alice in an ancestral file by someone giving an them an incorrect marriage date in Poynton which should have been registered Macclesfield but was not and giving Thomas = Alice's father mysteriously wrong  parents from Rochdale, but it did say Henry and Alice died in Sydney Australia.   1917 and 1905.

I have found Henry DANIELS death in West Maitland 2793/1917 and Alice DANIELS Newcastle 2387/1908.   No death for their daughter as a DANIEL or DANIELS.

There is a possible marriage for Jane A Daniels to a Joseph Orr = Newcastle 5319/1894.

Could some one please look up census  after 1881 to see if they are on them.

Hopefully they will have put their birthplaces as Bosden Parish Cheshire or Hazel Grove or Stockport or in the case of Alice - Poynton Cheshire.

Perhaps if it is Jane's marriage her parents names may be shown.

I did not find any Australian born children on the NSW free index.

Hope this is not too complicated.   You cannot believe the hours of extra work that these different spellings of Alice's surname has caused.

Hi Kath

If you are refering to a census in Aus,  well,  we dont have any available to search,   :'(

We have Electoral rolls,  but the ones online dont start until abt 1901 ( i think)

The marriage of Joseph ORR and Jane A Daniels,  produced 3 kids i can see,  on the index,

Joseph H  1896 ,  Eva  in 1898,  George R 1901  and William S  in 1905

Do these names ring any bells,  as family names ? ?

Did Alice have the middle name of Eliza?

There is a document on National Archives, date 1918, which mentions a Susan Orr and Alice Eliza Daniels. It has to do with the will of Margaret ASGCRIFT. I do feel that the Asgcrift should be Ashcroft. There is a death for Margaret in 1915.

I note from the 1851 census that Henry DANIEL b 1846 Bosden has parents John and Jane.  The death you found in NSW BMDs for Henry DANIELS, 1917 at West Maitland also lists parents as John and Jane.  At least it doesn't rule him out!
Parents for death of Alice DANIELS, 1908 Newcastle, are Thomas and Ann, again a hopeful sign.

Cheers, Judith

Since 2009 I have found ships Plymouth to Queensland Henry, Alice and Jane then later  Alice  Jane AND Martha ship Queensland to Sydney.    Alice of Jane's death cert says 15 months spent in Queensland then rest of life in NSW.

I don't know when this Martha was born.   At sea or in Queensland as no age given.    Cannot seem to find birth registration Queensland or NSW (late).

Was sent scans of "HASPIN" original 1845 birth cert for Alice and also death certs by an ORR descendant.   Can be seen on my public tree on Ancestry.

I see there is a probate packet for Jane Ann ORR at nsw state records
http://investigator.records.nsw.gov.au/Entity.aspx?Path=\Item\1119569

I can photograph this next time I am there if you wish.

If you see any other probate records or divorces I can photograph those for you too
http://investigator.records.nsw.gov.au/ (best for probates but there is a gap in online indexes for probates between 1891 and 1927) so in that case refer to other online online indexes https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/

(I have to admit that since NSW SRO have revamped their homepage I am having trouble finding some of the usual stuff but that's probably just me  :( )

Daughter of Jane and Joseph - Eva Edgar is at Sandgate with her husband Harold Stanley. Edward and Elizabeth are Harold's folks.  Eva death: 15-7-'67. In the photo the plaque has fallen down. I think there is a newer one behind it.

Hazel Grove in Cheshire consisted of three parishes.    Bosden, Norbury and Torkington.   These names are not used now.

There were literally hundreds  Daniel / Daniels people.  So many in fact that the final s gets added and taken away when it shouldn't.  Henry seems to have the Daniel version.

Henry's two sons who died were John Daniel June Qu 1870 - Dec Qu 1870  and Rowland Daniel Mar Qu 1872 to Mar Qu 1874.  both born in Hazel Grove.

Henry's grandfather John Daniel was married twice and the cousin visiting Henry, Alice and Jane on the 1881 census was the daughter of the son of one of John Daniel's half brothers - she, the cousin emigrated to the USA just after Henry left for Australia.

Thank you so much for the links to the gravestones and everything.

Henry died of heart disease and dropsy.   Dropsy is now called Congestive heart failure and my mother died of that and I have it too sad to say.    My mother had a cousin on her father's side who had it so that is a double dose in her DNA and mine.

What a shame about Eva's husband dying before daughter was born.

Thanks again.

Isn't it awful, I love it when people feel the need to fix something that isn't broken.  >:(
