I am searching for mary jane power who was born 1876 in ballynelly in ireland and her fathers name was james power who was a labourer
Mary jane married james cooke in 1899 and her parents and other siblings apparently went to america a year or two after she married.
Can anyone help on links to find mary janes parents please..... I do have her marriage certificate but it only has her fathers name and states she was of full age at time..... wat does that mean?
thanx
-
'Full age' means that she was 21 years or older. Unfortunately only the father's name and occupation will appear on a marriage certificate but both parents should be listed on a birth certificate (unless child is illegitimate).
The 1901 census for Ireland is due to come online shortly and might show Mary Jane's family if they are still in Ireland.
Where did the Power family go to in America? Each state keeps its own vital records (births, marriages, deaths) and many of them list birthdates and places as well as parents' names on death certificates.
-
I dont know exactly where they went I am only goin on wat mum told me
Apparently they left ireland not long after mary jane married and she never saw her parents again so I dont have specific details to go on thats why I always look for hints or suggestions etc
-
There are lots of American records online but difficult without more details like names and ages and a location in U.S.
-
I only know her father was called samuel power so dont really have enough to work with just now but thanx
-
Was her father James or Samuel Power. Where exactly did the marriage take place?
-
her fathers name was samuel and mary jane power married james cooke in moville in ireland.

I am searching for mary jane power who was born 1876 in ballynelly in ireland and her fathers name was james power who was a labourer
1911 census has Mary Jane born in Co Derry

-
Ellis Island has Alexander Power and Henry Power emigrating from Donegal in 1898 to their brother Samuel in Chicago
-
sorry about my last post...I was workin on somethin else and mixed up the names
The mary jane power I am lookin for...her father was james power and yes the link you put on is the family I am researchin.... I already have that census report....
She married james cooke and i have all the details for that even her marriage certificate but it only gives her fathers name and they were livin in ballynelly prior to her marriage
My mother told me that mary janes parents moved to america shortly before or after her marriage
I also have mary jane as livin with her aunt and uncle in 1901 with her first two born sons but dont know where james cooke was at that time...
-
I have come across a problem relating to the death of mary jane power cooke
I have her death as 1948 in inishowen, ireland and after writing to dublins record office, they have sent me wrong certificate and they have done 2 searches for her death between 1940 and 1950 and cant find her.
They found a lady with same name but the lady they sent me certificate for was spinster and servant so I know its wrong certificate.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I can find the right certificate?..... This is baffling me
Her husband died in 1957 and it stated on his death certificate he was married but it was his son signing the death certificate..... I thought if mary jane was dead by that time then it would have stated widower on his certificate so am I right in assumin if it stated he was married at time of his death then his wife mary jane was still alive at that time
All help much appreciated

I have just been told by another relative that mary jane power was definitely born in derry in ireland and her father was james power.
Apparently they left mary jane power with relatives called hemphill when she was 10yrs old (I have her birth as around 1873-1878) and they were supposed to come back and get her wen they had got a house and settled etc but they never came back for her.
She is on the 1901 census as with the hemphill family and her 2 first born sons so that explains that now..... But I still dont know how to find the parents and all I have to go on is that they went to america wen she was around 10yrs old.
can anyone help....thanx
-
What is the location for the Hemphill family? If the Hemphills were relatives that might give you a lead.
-
the hemphills are on the 1901 census for moville in donegal
james hemphill and sarah anne hemphill were teh relatives she stayed with
I am rackin my brain tryin to work out wat do try next

I found the following on Emerald Ancestors. Many of the families in the Magilligan area had links with Donegal. It may be of help.
James Power married Mary Allen 20 Dec 1847 in Tamlaghtarde C of I, Magilligan, Newtownlimavady. Co Londonderry.
James Power married Mary Moody Tamlaghtarde C of I, Magilligan, Newtwonlimavady, Co Londonderry.
-
so do I try trace those 2 james power families to see where that leads me then?....
Im not very good on the ancestry stuff so all help much appreciated so thanx for above info dear

Think you need to sort out a few things here before you'll be able to get the information you are looking for.
Starting with the place "mary jane power who was born 1876 in ballynelly in ireland" which is supposed to be in Co. Londonderry.
I've checked 2 different sources and neither list a townland called 'ballynelly' in Co. Derry.
There does, however, seem to be a Ballynelly in Moville area:
www.movillerecords.com/covenant4.html
www.movillerecords.com/history1.htm
In 1911 census it's listed as Ballynally in Moville D.E.D.
-
Griffith's Valuation for Ballynally (Moville, Lower Parish) shows the surnames Hemphill and Cook/Cooke but no Powers. Only Powers listed are in other places but Griffith's is mid-1800s.

What makes you think this is the correct James Power? what were the names of your Mary Jane's siblings that went to America?
James Power and Mary McConnell had several children according to submitted records in IGI (www.familysearch.org)-
1. Jane born 5 Jan.1869 Mileford [Milford?], Co. Donegal
2. Mary Ann born 7 Apr.1871 Carrowkeel/Carronkeel, Co. Donegal
3. John born 6 June 1873 Carronkeel, Co. Donegal
4. Letitia born 17 Sept.1875 Crowhan, Co. Donegal
5. Alexander born 8 Jan.1877 Carrowkeel, Co. Donegal
6. Alice born 22 Dec.1879 Carrowkeel, Co. Donegal

I dont know if its the right people.... I am so frustrated with this that I am researching all james power links I can find in the hope that I will come up with the correst one at some point.....
I dont know if mary jane power had any sibblings and thats why I cant be sure of any of the power links I find...... I only know for definate that mary jane power was born in derry coz thats wat it says on census reports and she was church of ireland religion
-
I dont know if mary jane power had any sibblings and thats why I cant be sure of any of the power links I find......
From your 1st post "Mary jane married james cooke in 1899 and her parents and other siblings apparently went to america a year or two after she married."
Think it might be wise to start from scratch from the facts in a logical order rather than jumping about in case there's a connection to a record that you find. It's difficult for us to help when you post details, we search and then you change the details.
First source is Mary Jane Power's marriage. What about date and place of marriage? names of witnesses? father's name and occupation (James Power labourer?)? Mary Jane's residence?
-
My first post was usin details from my mums memory..... I could only work with info given to me at the time..... and I have contacted other members of family to see wat they knew and it was only in past week I discovered from elderly aunt that mary janes parents left her with hemphills wen she was 10yrs old to emmigrate to america.... My mum thought it was just before or after her marriage but this elderly aunt is adamant that mary jane was around 10yrs old wen left with hemphills because she saw old letters from america and her parents many years ago but they have since been lost because the building the stuff was in was burned down and they had to build new cottage but elderly aunt cant remember which part of america the letters were from but they were from her dad james power.
I got the marriage certificate from dublins records office which states mary jane power married james cooke on 5th april 1899 in parish of st columbus and witnesses were james cookes mum annie cooke and family friend called john peoples.
It states mary jane was of full age and residence was ballynelly, lower moville and her father was james power, labourer.
James cookes father was benjamin cooke, farmer and they resided in drumaweir, lower moville and james cooke was 24yrs old at time of marriage and son of farmer.
I have for definate mary jane power on the 1901 census for moville as livin with the hemphills who were her aunt and uncle, and she has her first 2 born sons with her but I dont know where her husband was at that time.
In 1911, she was then back on family farm in moville with husband and more children and her mother in law and uncle lived next door with her sister in law elizabeth.
That is the facts I have..... I have not put misleading info on the page....I have tried furnishing people with the facts I get as people give them to me so people could maybe help or point me in right direction to get info I need.
I am frustrated with this search and am so desperate for info that I am willing to waste time searching any names associated with james power to hopefully find a link.
I have spent over £100 euros trying to find her death certificate as well but dublins records office has searched and cant find it......
So I am sorry if you feel I am misleadin you with false information, I am just eager to find links then hopefully the right ancestors......
-
I forgot to mention that it states on census reports that mary jane power was born in derry but it doesnt say where exactly.
I dont know if she had any sibblings but the elderly aunt thinks a son went with the parents but he was only baby and she cant remember if his name was ever mentioned in letters....
mary janes husband james cooke died 9th april 1957 in drumaweir, moville

Family stories, even if they turn out to be incorrect, can be a valuable resource but do need to be checked out as they can be mistaken (and different relatives often have different versions of the same event).
As I said, start with your first source, the marriage certificate. Mary Jane's residence listed as Ballynelly, Lower Moville which fits in with Griffith's Valuation (1850s) showing Hemphills there.
Normally church records would be useful but since Mary Jane seems to have been born elsewhere they may not help in this case.
'Derry' can refer to the county or the city (and in the case of the city perhaps even the area surrounding it which could extend into Co. Donegal).
I searched Irish civil index again for a likely birth and found no 'Mary Power' born 1870-1879 in Co.Donegal or Londonderry that looks like her.
-
my mum always said that mary jane power was older than wat she told people.... Mary jane was my mums gran and she does look older than her husband in pics I have of her but it has been source of debate since I started ancestry trail but cannot be confirmed as her marriage certificate doesnt state her age.
I have just spent 20 euros checkin out 4 births in ireland of a mary jane power but altho it has james power as father, without knowin her mothers name then I am stumped and this search is causin many headaches.
I just keep tryin anythin to find the slightest hints.
I am just confused at to why the hemphills can be on the census and griffin valuation if mary jane power parents are not on it as same time at some point.
I found one james power in templemore, church lane, co derry but other than his name, I cant be sure he is the father of mary jane....
-
Now for another important bit of Mary Jane Power's story- the family going off to America. Please note that this post is just ideas and not facts.
If Mary Jane was about 10 when parents left that's about 1886ish. Unfortunately 1890 U.S. census was destroyed by fire years ago so next census is 1900. Lots of James Powers born Ireland in that census. Without a place or age for James it's very difficult to find him anywhere in U.S.
If James was married in Ireland then his marriage, if a Catholic ceremony after 1864, should appear in civil index but without knowing wife's name and where it took place just as difficult to find.
If the Hemphills took in Mary Jane there had to have been some connection/reason. Are there any descendants still alive?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just ready to post and I see your latest post.
-If Mary Jane did lie about her age and was born before 1864 that would explain lack of birth registration. Checked for 'Mary Power' born 1864-1869 in index but nothing in Londonderry/Donegal.
It would seem that the Hemphills lived in Ballynelly but that doesn't mean James Power came from the area.
-
My mother remembered an aunt of mary janes called sarah and it was her fathers sister so that may be the sarah who married james hemphill but again its a fact I cant confirm but mary jane continued to visit them till their death and because my mother was brought up in scotland, she never saw her gran (mary jane power/cooke) as often as she would have liked......
I just dont have many facts to go on which is why its so frustratin.....
There is my mums cousin who now runs the family farm in ireland and she is in her 80's..... I have written to her many times and only had 2 replies and she wanted to make sure I was who I said I was before givin me any details......
I had to confirm some things for her and then she asked me wat I wanted to know and since I sent request for info on mary jane power, the lady has not written back yet so I am hopin she does so soon coz I have been waitin 2mths already and I know she elderly so Im tryin to be patient.
I will come back with more details wen I get some but thanx for your time tonight...it has been much appreciated
-
I found a mary jane power born in limmerick in 1864 but again its not neccassarily the one Im lookin for but Im willin to try anythin to find the slightest hint......
-
Limerick is nowhere near Derry so I wouldn't think there's any connection at this point. If Mary Jane was born around 1864 her birth might not have been registered (apparently many early ones were not).
-
I know but like I say.....Im willin to try anythin to find even the slightest link or hint etc.....This is really frustratin coz its only mary janes family causin me headaches on mothers side......... and Im patiently waitin on elderly aunt from ireland replyin to letter in hope she has info which my mother thinks she does......
thanx so much fro bein helpful anyway and Im sorry if Im testin your patience as well
-
I can understand wanting to grab at any possible clues but you might end up researching a completely different Mary Jane Power. Fingers crossed that you soon get more information from aunt.
-
Its not just my fingers I have crossed.......lol
-
Im a distant realitive of the Cooke line.
Benjamin Cooke/Anne Breden
George Cooke/Anna Porter
Dudley Cooke/Clara Ulmen
Jim Cooke/Barbara Humes
Jason Cooke/Estaline Cooke...Im Jason
Abi Cooke
I have tons of info but not sure if I can help that high up.
My father talked with Ethel Dunken.
Jason Cooke
-
it certainly sounds like you are talking about my ancestors.....I got as far back as benjamin cooke and anne breden......
any help would be much appreciated
thanx
-
im still on this trail and gettin nowhere fast
-
Some of the things you mentioned can be checked and verified so that you don't keep jumping to incorrect conclusions. For example-
My mother remembered an aunt of mary janes called sarah and it was her fathers sister so that may be the sarah who married james hemphill but again its a fact I cant confirm ...
It's quite easy to look for the marriage of James Hemphill to see what Sarah's maiden name was- James Hemphill married (1876 Inishowen registration district) Sarah Anne Peoples. One of the witness at Mary Jane Power's marriage was Peoples (perhaps a connection of her aunt Sarah).
-
thanx.......i been away for quite a while from ancestry so its like startin anew but all help/advice is appreciated
