Title: HENDERSON- Syerla, Clonfeacle, Tyrone, Laughgall
Post by: popkiwi on Thursday 24 December 09 02:01 GMT (UK)
I am searching for the parents of my 5x Great Grandparents, Isaac Henderson and Jane (Askin) who were married in Syerla, Tyrone in abt 1797.

They had four children,
1 - James, who was born in Syerla, Clonfeacle, Tyrone in 1799 and married Ann Jane Shillington from Glasmulaugh in abt 1828.
James' eldest son immigrated to America.

2 - Isaac b 1801 in Syerla

3 - Ann b 1802 in Syerla

4 - Joseph b 1805 in Syerla. Joseph married Nancy Allen (not known where or when)  Joseph and Nancy had one known child,
 - Thomas Henderson b in Armagh in 1831 who married Elizabeth Walsh in Laughgall Parish Church on 06/10/1853. Thomas and Elizabeth had nine children but between the 3rd and 4th child they immigrated to New Zealand in 1867 aboard the Lancashire Witch.

I was born in Leeston, New Zealand.
I have studied a map and cannot find a place called Syerla, although there is a Syerla Road not far from Laughgall

Any information would be appreciated - Evan Bennett (Australia)

Evan,
Syerla is a townland (a small administrative area) in the Parish of Clonfeacle near the town of Dungannon in Co.Tyrone.

Shillington is a fairly unusual name here and it may be of interest that I have a cousin's wife whose grandmother was Letitia Maria Shillington, born 1869 in Dungannon.

Regards

Thank you for your reply.
I have now determined from what you say that maybe I should be looking for Clonfeacle rather than Syerla.
What would you suggest would be my next step in tracing Isaac Henderson. I have searched Parishes in Tyrone but have had no luck.

Evan,
You will have to depend on church records where these exist. Civil birth registrations only started in 1864 and Protestant marriages from 1845. Catholic marriage registrations started in 1864.

Do you have any other info on the Shillington family?

Very little but if you google proni you will see a means of searching the Calendar of Wills and there are some Shillingtons of Glassmullagh there.

Joseph Henderson, b 1804, had a brother James. James died in Banbeth Ireland  (1874) and was buried in Berrbush Ireland.
Are you familiar with these places?

One may be BANBRIDGE but see www.thecore.com/seanruad and change the "search method" to one of the other settings.

Were you ever able to locate the parents for Isaac Henderson?

Isaac Henderson is my 4th great grandparent though the grandson, Alexander Shillington Henderson, the son of James, who immigrated to America.

I have just started to work on this line, so I don't know where to start.

Hi Garth - Thanks for your reply.  I have found who I believe to the be parents of Issac Henderson - Thomas Henderson and Mary (unknown) born abt 1746 in Ireland.
As you state, you descend from James born 1798 who married Ann Shillington. Then there was Isaac b 1801, Ann b 1802 and then I descend from Joseph b 1804 who married Nancy Allen. They had  a son, Thomas Henderson in 1831 who married Elizabeth Welsh and they immigrated to New Zealand in 1867 where I was born in 1951.

I have my Tree on Genes Reunited if you are interested.
Do you have a Tree online anywhere? - Regards - Evan Bennett

Hi,
Have just looked at the IGI section of www.familysearch.org and noticed that they list many Shillingtons from Co. Tyrone from about 1750 onwards.

Hi Garth - No I have no documentation thus far - just joing up the dots on IGI etc.
What does encourage me though is that they appear to be the only Handerson family in the area, plus that the area concerned is very small and not far from Loughgall where Isaacs  Grandson Thomas (my 2xGreat Grandfather) married Elizabeth Welsh in Loughgall Parish Church on 06/10/1853. I do have that documentation as well as Thomas' death cert which shows his parents as Joseph Henderson  b 1804 in Syerla and Nancy Allen.
Isaac Married Jane Askin in 1798, the same year that James Henderson was born, followed by Isaac jnr in 1801, Ann in 1820 and Joseph in 1804.

I have in my notes that the link between Isaac and his father, Thomas b abt 1746 and married to Mary Unknown, I got from One Great Family.com

Trivia - It was Thomas and Elizabeth who immigrated to New Zealand where I was born. I have a photo of their headstone at the Churchyard where my brother was married in 1968.

I hope you find this helpful - Evan

I stumbled onto this discussion by  "accident". My great grandfather was Alexander Shillington Henderson. I have been trying to research this line for a number of years. Things I have learned. In 1922 the English and Irish had a argument which destroyed a significant number of records, so we look at substitutes. Which I have done, as far as I can. I have compiled an number of documents. But let's start at the beginning of my research. I found a short history of Alexander Shillington Henderson, which I have attached. It is a PDF which most of my documents are.
Will continue later if there is interest

NOTE It would not let me post it. It is to large. So we'll need to handle it another way. I have a website that It is on. So If interested I will indicate the links later.

Popkiwi, I too am related to Thomas Henderson and Elizabeth Welsh, I have his parents as Joseph henderson and Nancy Allen, grandparents were recorded as Isaac Henderon and Jane Askin.

If you are stuck for information regarding the Hendersons of Springston, I can help you out there as I have at least 95% completed.
All i have to do is confirm that Joseph Henderson and sarah Proctor that were also living in Springston was Thomas' brother

Hi - I came across your page quite by accident and it caught my attention but realise the entries are not recent BUT did you ever track down your information?  I am also interested in the  Henderson family as a later family of them was my grandmother but she seems to have disappeared off the radar.  Funnily enough I live in NZ - Tauranga.  Would love to know if you have had any success.  Maureen

Hi Maureen,
do you descend from any of the Hendersons that immigrated to canterbury, I have found several different chains that seem to go to other places in the South Island, Ive also traced some of the older hendersons in ireland, but I have since put all genealogy on hold for awhile,(well until winter any ways), Popkiwi whom lives in Aussie, seems to be a direct descendant and a close relative of mine, I might take some time and go back on to his posts

Hi Deadman!!  I didn't actually expect a reply but I guess when folk get into this geology it can cover years.  I am not descended from any Hendersons who came to NZ  and I have just had a quick look and I reckon the Isaac Henderson who would have been my great grandfather was born about 1843 and that doesn't seem to tie in with popkiwi's findings so maybe it is another branch of the family.  Will go back and put things down on paper more clearly when I have time.  I initially wanted to find out about my grandmother but hit a dead end and actually gave up until about 3 weeks ago when someone in America contacted me and it turns out we are definitely related but on my father's side which I hadn't even looked at.  Have just about worn my eyes out going through census records to try and see where my grandmother was as she definitely wasn't listed with my  grandfather.  U suspect there may be a skeleton in the cupboard!!  I came to NZ in 1956 by myself - yes I am very old Ha - so it may be I will never find out.  Thanks for your reply.  Maureen
