Hi
I found an index entry in the Sydney Directory for a business in 1890
BEAVIS A. & S. Fruit wholesalers and commission agents . 123 York Street Sydney.
I could not find the birth of A Beavis, but this could be the death
Death
In 1945 BEAVIS, ALFRED father ROBERT mother ELIZABETH HURSTVILLE reg. 17193
Perhaps this was the beginning of the FRUIT business with the brothers together, which Karenlee spots in the 1930 & 1933 electoral roll.

Hi Karenlee and Sue.
Lionel Worthington was my uncle so it is the correct family that you've turned up. I didn't know much about Lionel. Funny to see him listed as a "Motor Driver' as he was one of the worst drivers I have seen!
Didn't know about the fruit business either so that will be something else to check out.
Lionel was married to Marjorie but they divorced as you say. Lionel married my aunt in 1959.
Thank You both for your efforts.
Cheers

I did not see the marriage of ROBERT & ELIZABETH on the NSW indexes.
There is this marriage in IPSWICH on FREEBMD UK
June 1/4 1859 Vol. 4a. Pg. 848.

Your ancestors are buried in the Anglican section of Rookwood cemetery.
I can do a headstone hunt and take photos, next week, if you like.

Excellent, Spruso.
So if Cando's information is correct - I'm sure it is - she has the missing Elizabeth covered. That only leaves the mother of Elizabeth - Sarah Cole to account for.

And a Leslie Charles Beavis in 1997, Independent.
There's a Sarah Cole over there. She corresponds to a NSW BDM entry 1887- parents Joseph and Ann G, Petersham.

Geez!
It's starting to get busy now!.
I have a photo of a WW1 soldier that I found in Lionel's photos. There is nothing written on the back. I can't find anything on the Comm. War Graves site or Aust.Nat.Archives that link up with a Sydney NSW Beavis.
I will scan and post it as soon as I can.
Merry Xmas to you all,

Couldn't find Robert and wife coming into Australia. As they had a child in 1851 it counts out the marriage in '59.
There was a convict Robert Beavis who was pardoned 1 July 1846. He was given a ticket of leave passport in 1842.

From a post on Ancestry:
Robert McKenzie
Occupation: sailor
Birth: c.1792, Scotland
Death: 19 February 1825, Windsor, NSW, Australia
Buried: 21 February 1825, Ebenezer Churchyard, NSW, Australia
Married: (by banns) on 13 April 1818 in Windsor, NSW, Australia
Jane Grono
Birth: c.1803, NSW, Australia
Death: 9 August 1865, Kanimbla, Hartley District, NSW, Australia
Buried: 12 August 1865, Mount York, Vale of Clwydd, NSW, Australia
(Married secondly Michael (Malcolm) Mitchell, 1827, NSW)
It is believed that Robert McKenzie (alias Robinson?) was among a group of sailors from the ship Active who were marooned during a sealing expedition on the New Zealand coast line for four years. They were rescued in 1813 by Captain John Grono and his crew on the Governor Bligh, all arriving in Port Jackson on 15 December 1813.
Children of Robert McKenzie and Jane Grono:
John Robert McKenzie
b. 29 November 1823, Pitt Town, NSW, Australia
Elizabeth McKenzie
b. 11 November 1821, Windsor, NSW, Australia
Married: 1840, Windsor, Sydney
Robert Beavis (Baveis)

Further info:
Application to marry Nov 1839
Robert Beavis
Aged 30
Bachelor
Transported for life "Burrell"
Holding a TOL
Elizabeth McKenzie
Aged 21
Spinster
Born in the colony
7th child - Samuel Beavis born 1864.
Elizabeth's age on her MI cannot be correct if her son Robert was born in 1849. There are death notices for this family at http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home
Robert Beavis was convicted of "stealing one ewe sheep" at the Dorset assizes 12 March 1830. He was sentenced to death, but this was commuted to transportation for life. His partner in crime was George Lester the younger.
Conditional Pardon - 1846
In 1854, a Samuel Beavis aged 40, born at Weymouth, Dorset, arrived with his family as assisted immigrants onboard the "Tantivy". He stated that he had two brothers, Robert and Jacob Beavis residing near Parramatta. His parents were John and Mary Beavis, and his mother was living at Bristol in Somersetshire (sic). I can't find immigration for Jacob - mentions in newspapers including "of George Street Markets, Fruiterer", and also in Elizabeth's funeral announcements in 1876.

BEAVIS Samuel 21
BEAVIS Sarah Ann 12 There is a marriage and a death for Sarah - If the death is correct then her
father was Jacob
BEAVIS Robert 29
BEAVIS Emma Maria 24
BEAVIS Emma 3 I can't find a marriage or death for Emma
BEAVIS Robert W 1 Died on voyage
Appear to be two families. So, who is this Robert? A cousin, possibly. Possible death: 1898 Robert J father William and mother Elizabeth at Balmain North.
Emma could be a sister/in-law. There's an Emma Beavis death in 1908, with father John and no mother listed.
Death
1863 Samuel Beavis of John and Mary
1885 There's a Jacob, but parents are listed as Robert and Mary. Could be him, though.

Robert's death notice lists three son-in-laws:
Thomas Gladman - so I do believe that the Sarah on the ship, was his daughter. Married in 1868
John Anderson - married Charlotte Beavis in 1868 - Where did she come for. I can't see her in BDM
Thomas Boulton - married Elizabeth in 1877.

From NSW BDM:
with parents Robert and Elizabeth:
1845 Bavers Sarah C
1847 Bavis Sarah A
1851 Beavis Robert S
1852 Beavis Jacob
1856 Beavis John
1859 Beavis Elizabeth
1861 Beavers Alfred
1864 Beavis Samuel
Re "Tantivy" 1854 - Samuel, Eliza and Sarah Ann are a family, and also with them is Eliza Gill who appears to be Eliza's daughter from a previous marriage (father Thomas dead, mother onboard)
Robert and Emma (formerly Dyer) with their children, also named Robert and Emma, were from the Isle of Wight in Hampshire. Robert's brother Samuel was also onboard. Despite the common names, there seems to be no connection between these two families, and Robert stated that they had no relatives in the colony. Just to confuse things even more, this Robert returned to the Isle of Wight and appears on the 1881 census with his son Samuel(!!) who was born around 1855 in Sydney.

1851 census, Marylebone, London:
Lionel Cole 63 Gate Keeper born Woodbridge, Suffolk

St Marylebone:
The borough includes almost the whole of Regent's Park, with a portion of Primrose Hill north of it. These have altogether an area of 472 acres. The park, originally Marylebone Park, was enclosed by James I., and received its modern name from the Prince Regent, afterwards George IV. It contains the Zoological Gardens, one of the most noteworthy institutions of its kind, attracting numerous visitors to its splendid collections of living animals. Here are also the gardens of the Royal Botanic Society, incorporated in 1839. They are enclosed and beautifully laid out, and contain hot-houses and a museum. Exhibitions are held each year. The Toxophilite Society, founded in 1781, has also occupied grounds here since 1883. The picturesque lake is supplied by the ancient Tyburn. The Regent's Canal skirts the north side of the park. Another famous enclosure is Lord's Cricket Ground,

Hi,
A search of the worldconnect project here will show a number of contributors interested in the BEAVIS family branches including yours. The details given may be additional to the tree found by DEBRA
As always, the information needs to be treated cautiously as it is contributed and may or may not be accurate.
You may think that is worth browsing and possibly even making contact with others sharing your family interest

Thanks everyone for all your information. After assessing it all I think the couple below are the direct line for Lionel and his father Samuel. I have discounted the "Tantivy" Beavis families. Funeral notices in the SMH seem to tie in as well. (All opinions welcome.)

Sarah Jane COLE must have been born a Catholic. This may be why she chose to be buried in the Catholic Section. I think around then, and well in to the 20th century, there was a strong division between Catholic and Protestant religions so religious beliefs may have overridden family.
Sarah COLE (GILMORE)'s birth would appear to be around 1839. No GILMORE on NSWBDM but a Sarah GILMER for 1839 with parents William and Jane which may be her misspelt.
I think you have all provided me with enough information to start putting it together. Thanks everyone for your contribution. Have a great New Year.

Yes, there was a strong division where death and marriage was concerned. I'm wondering if Benjamin wasn't catholic also.

I don't know if something happened in the family over religion but I remember as youngsters, if we wanted to really stir Lionel up, we would ask his opinion of the Pope or Catholics. That was enough to get him going on a tirade for about five or ten minutes! Ha Ha. ;D ;D

Hi Spruso,
I have photos for you, if you'd like to PM me an email address.
There wasn't a headstone, on CCC 69, 70, that I could find. That was for Sara Ann Beavis, Benjamin Cole, Elizabeth and Samuel Beavis.
Also couldn't find one in Section A Row 16 Grave 328, 320 for Robert J Beavis, Sarah, Annie, Robert.
Maybe someone with the MI's could see if there was one.

Hi, I'm new to this but I noticed a comment about Elizabeth Mckenzie age on a MI.
Firstly what is MI? Marriage index?
I am a direct decendent of their daughter Mary Jane Beavis b 1841. Mary married James Edward Hatch and had 12 children of which photos show some are dark. I am trying to track my Aboriginal heritage (confirmed markers in blood tests) and family rumor has it descending from the Hatch family in Moree.
The dates seem odd to me to. Any help or leads would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

I can see that Mary Jane BEAVIS married a James HATCH in 1857 and the marriage was registered at Parramatta. (NSW BDM #2299). This would be a very long journey from Moree to Parramatta in 1857. There's quite a few probable birth registrations to the couple, but I did not notice any registrations for Moree.
Are you suggesting that James Edward HATCH was his full name and that he has an Aboriginal heritage?
