I have a separate thread regarding my Irish 3x great grandfather but I thought I'd start a new one so things don't get confused.
I was lead to believe that his name was Eugene Callaghan but I now know I was on the wrong track.
This came to light recently when I was contacted by a lady in the USA saying that she was related to him.
Everything seemed to check out apart from her Michael Callaghan.
Anyway, this morning I have had another look for my Michael was born in Navan about 1870/1871 and I think I have found the correct record!
This one says his baptism/birth was on 19 October 1870 in the parish of Navan, Meath.
Parents are Thomas Callaghan and Ellen Melia.

I got the information from this website;

Nudge up. Can anyone help me out please? :-\

Bumping up posts isn't really allowed and since you only started this thread this afternoon you haven't really given much time for answers.

Have you the marriage record of your Michael Callaghan?
Your first posted that his father was Eugene and now you think Thomas that's a big jump?
Picking random Michael Callaghan's wont work i am afraid. All the post are getting very confusing and need some logic about the research. And i mean this is a nice way.
What you need to do is get as much solid information about your Michael Callaghan that you can be 100% sure of.
1. His Death record does this list his parents? In UK and Ireland it wont probably. But in US and Australia/NZ it should?
2. His marriage record must at least list his father's name usually if not the mother's also, depending on what place he married. Also Church record will have different information to Civil Registration Records. have you exhausted all these areas?
3. Other information his will, ship manifest, grave, occupation of father on wedding cert etc can all help
4. Children's names can prove major hints to past generations!
Its important to work back from what you know.
Otherwise you could spend years picking random Michael Callaghan's.
If you cant be sure of anything on his generation maybe his children generation will be the one to work on first. So we are fully sure who Michael Callaghan wife's name was.
Otherwise
If you are 100% sure that your Michael Callaghan married Julia Gerrard you need to order their marriage from www.groireland.ie using the below information. The form is not designed for all this information but include it where you can. And leave blank or put N/A the PPS and other fields that are not relevant.
Michael Callaghan and Julia Gerrard
Registration District: Navan
Year and Quarter: Jan-Mar 1898
Volume 2 Page 794
This is the only way to move forward this research. As this record will give father's names and other solid information.

My Michael married Julia Gerrard on 16 January 1898 in Navan, Meath.
There is no father listed for either party but I have done a little research on the Gerrard line so I know her father was John Gerrard. He died in 1900.
I know my 2x great grandfather is Michael as his name was on my great grandfather's marriage certificate when he married in 1920.
-
I think I mentioned the site where I got the Callaghan information from.
If I get Michael's marriage certificate is it guaranteed to tell me who his father was? There is no mention of it on the record I have printed off from the Irish site I have been using.

It's not guaranteed, but most civil marriage certs will show father's names and occupations.
The details included in Parish records can vary quite a bit, and may not include details of parents.

Thanks Shane :D

Yesterday afternoon I filled in application form for my Michael's birth certificate and marriage certificate.
I'm hoping that both of these will show the same father, Thomas Callaghan.
-
I am still waiting for my certificates to arrive.
-
The marriage certificate arrived today and it shows that Michael's father was Thomas Callaghan, labourer.
Julia's father is John Gerrard, labourer.
Married 16 January 1898 at Roman Catholic Chapel of Navan, Meath.
The birth certificate I ordered wasn't the right one so it wasn't issued.
I went looking for a birth around 1874 as Michael was 24 when he married and was given the date of 28 December 1874 in Navan, Meath. Parents Thomas Callaghan and Mary Hughes.
-
I am finding it hard to find information on Thomas Callaghan.
-
I.G.I. (www.familysearch.org) lists children of a Thomas Callaghan and Mary Hughes in Co. Armagh:
1. Susan Calaghan born 25 Aug.1864 Keady district, Co.Armagh (page 50 in civil register)
2. Catharine Callaghan born 29 Apr.1866 Co. Armagh
3. Thomas Callaghan born 4 Apr.1872 Co. Armagh
There are also Michael Callaghan born 28 Dec.1874 Ireland to a Thomas Callaghan and a Mary Hughes but there's no way of knowing where all these 4 children belong to the same family or if that Michael is the one you are looking for.
-
All I do know for sure is that my Michael's father was Thomas Callaghan, labourer.
Michael married Julia Gerrard on 16 January 1898 in Navan, Meath. I have his marriage certificate.
Michael died on 8 July 1952 in Keighley, West Yorkshire and is buried along with his wife, son John Thomas (my great grandfather), mother-in-law Ellen Gerrard and Julia's nephew Christopher Gerrard at Utley Cemetery in Keighley.
The age at death was given as 81 meaning that he was born about 1870/1871.
My great grandmother Ada May Callaghan (wife of Thomas) was the informant. I suppose she could have made a mistake and he was actually a bit younger.
What do you think?

A few days ago I e-mailed St Mary's, Navan and I've just received the information I've been waiting for :-)
It tells me that Michael Callaghan was born and baptised on 19 October 1870 at the church St Mary's, Navan.
Parents are Thomas Callaghan and Ellen Melia and the sponsors were Thomas Melia and Anna Fitzsimmons. There doesn't seem to be a record for Thomas and Ellen's marriage.
Do you think Thomas Melia could be Ellen's father?
-
I.G.I. (www.familysearch.org) lists 3 other children for Thomas Callaghan and Ellen Melia:
1. Margaret born 9 Mar.1874 Co. Meath
2. Josephine born 2 Mar.1876 Butterstown, Co. Meath
3. Ellen Callaghan born 13 Aug.1879 Co. Meath
-
Thanks for the information on Ellen. I already had information on the others.
The lady who sent me the baptism information said that there were six children in the family. How do I go about finding the other two?
Thanks.
-
If there are 6 children listed in baptismal records then the logical thing to do would be to check the church records.
-
I can't do that as I live in the UK.
I was a bit surprised she didn't tell me who the others were but as I was just asking about Michael that's the information I got.
-
Then you should contact her and say you are interested in the rest of the family.
-
I'll ask her, thanks :)
-
Thomas Callaghan married Ellen Melia on 25 July 1867 in Oristown, Meath. Would that be the bride's parish?
-
Oristown is a town and RC parish just to the North-west of Navan parish.
Usually marriages took place in the bride's parish.

Thanks :D
Do you know of a good site where I can find out about Navan? Michael was living in Butterstream at the time of his marriage. I love that name :D

The only place I can see at the moment named Butterstream is in Co. Kildare and near to Clane. There could be several places with the same name. The townland database (www.thecore.com/seanruad) is down at the moment.. might be worth another look when comes back online.
a few links on the history of Navan :
www.e-navan.com (http://www.e-navan.com/history.html)
askaboutireland Navan/Slane (http://www.askaboutireland.ie/reading-room/history-heritage/folklore-of-ireland/the-holy-wells-of-meath-f/navan-slane/)
if you google history of navan you get lots of results..
