Hi all
A relative of mine was adopted when a few weeks old. She was told by her adoptive Mother, that the maternal Mother was a friend of the family, who's occupation was Nurse.
We have managed to find the detail of the birth and the maternal Mother, and have just received a copy of the birth certificate.
Column 1 shows the address as 76 Howards Road, West Ham. Column 5 gives the Mothers name and shows a Hospital domestic of the Home, Brickham ? Green, Betchworth Dorking.
Column 7 shows the Mothers name again, and her residence as The Nurses Home, Howard Road Plaistow.
This was in 1948. I know that in some hospitals domestic staff did live in at the Nurses Home, but did this happen in 1948, or were untrained Nurses classed as Domestic Servants until they had completed their training ?
Your help will be very much appreciated. Many thanks
Lyn :)

- mention of the institution at Howard Road, Plaistow
I would guess that 76 Howards Road (could it be read "26", by the way?) and "The Nurses Home, Howard Road Plaistow", were the same place. It was where the child was born and where the mother was resident when she registered the birth.
More information here, including information on what records are held - your relative may be able to access further details:

The information in column five, where an address isn't normally given, probably relates to where she was working. "Brickham Green" = Brockham Green?
I wonder if this could have been where she was working:

Hi jorose
Thank you for your response to my posting. It was Brockham Green, not Brickham. I had a mental blank when I was typing the posting ::) As for the number of the road. There's no bottom loop on the first digit, and to me it looks like 76, but I may be wrong :-\
There's no Father's details so believe she was an unmarried Mother. Thank you for the links you've given. The house in Brockham village looks nice doesn't it.
Hopefully my relative will be getting more documents into the new year. Once again, thank you for your help. Merry Christmas
Lyn ;D

Hi essexgirl
Just to confirm its 26 Howard St. I've just acquired a birth cert, with that address. A FB page confirmed its function as maternity hospital. memories of Plaistow and beyond.
