Title: accessing baptism/birth records for Symmons
Post by: roby on Sunday 20 December 09 04:48 GMT (UK)
Dear All,

My ancestor Henry Thomas Symmons was a Church of Ireland clergyman ordained at Trinity College Dublin in 1864, and 5 of his 7 children were born in Dublin :).

I would like to access these records, is anyone able to point me in the right direction.  I live in Australia and would need to pay by credit card, is this facility available from the GRO?

Many thanks
Roby

Gerard.

Brilliant, thanks so much. this is the family including one child Alice Louisa who I believe died early and I had no name for, until now.

I have been to Dublin and visited 12 Ushers Island where this family lived which was very exciting for me.

Would the actual birth certificates give further information? or the link is the actual certificate.

Once again, your help is much appreciated.

regards
Roby

Hi Roby,

You could order the birth certificates from www.groireland.ie for the births after 1864

Using this website
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#c=1408347;p=collectionDetails

You can get the Volume Number and Page number which would be handy for you application

For example

FANNY ELLENOR SYMMONS
Registration District: Dublin South
Year: 1865
Volume 2 Page 783

The form is not designed for this information but include it where you can and don't mention that its from LDS site as they may reject application.

A photocopy of the certificate's would be the best option for research.

The birth certificate would have some additional information such as father's occupation and also an informant of registration which was usually one of the parents but sometimes could be someone else like an aunt uncle etc.

Any other help you need let us know

I not sure if the Baptism recorded originally kept at the church will have more information. The original links i posted are a transcription of the church records but i not sure if there was no witnesses are maybe they did not transcrib them.

On the irishgenealogy.ie/ site i had a look at Agnes Isabella Symmons and it gives her fathers occupation as clerk in holy orders and on Hannah's its Esquire and on Alice Louisa its Tutor.

Gerard and Michelene,

Thanks so much for the replies your help is much appreciated and  I will send for the certificates.
 Another query re: this family
Alice Louisa Symmons born 24 January 1862 did not emigrate to Australia with the others and there is mention of the death of 1 female child.  This family were back in London in 1877 for the birth of another son, but Alice's death is not found in England.
Any way of finding this death in Dublin??

Many thanks
Roby

If Alice died before 1864 then she would not be recorded on the Civil Registration.

I had a look for her on Civil Registration and no sign of an death of an Alice SYMMONS born c.1862.

So could be possible she died very young before Civil Registration which started in 1864.

Dear Roby

From my source work on the Irish Times newspaper I note 2 births to the wife of Henry Symmons on 23rd March 1863 and 25th January 1865
In an advert. on P.1 of the edition for 25th January 1861 it is noted that Mrs Symmons has purchased the Boarding and Day School of Mrs King at No.12 Usher's Island. That school was later removed to Dalkey House,Dalkey (see Irish Times 6th June 1873 in an advert. on P.8)

Quaxer,

thanks so much for the information.  I tried to access the Irish Times, but they charge a hefty fee online, is there another site that I can access these articles??

Kind Regards
Roby

the only way to access the Irish Times Archive is via their own website at http://www.irishtimes.com/search/archive.html. The do have a short term (24 hour/1 week) membership options.

I too am an ancestor, Agnes Isabella Symmons (later Hutchison) was my great grandmother. Do you have any information about when they came to Australia? I understand their mother Eleanor came too and they settled in Cowra NSW. Did Henry come as well?

Yes I do. My ggrandfather was Vincent Henry Symmons ,Agnes older brother.  They lived at Corowa (Cowra is another town in Nsw). I live very near Corowa and I have researched this family  extensively
Presently I am overseas and willreply in greater detail in a few weeks,

Henry died about 1880 and was buried in Bethal Green in London , so Eleanor and the younger children followed Vincent to Australia
Talk soon
Roby

Thank you so much. I realized just after I posted that it was Corowa not Cowra. I look forward to hearing from you. I am still unsure how to use roots chat as I have only recently started doing family history. I can give you my personal email if that is easier for communication.
