I am seeking information on the Monks family from Dublin.
My g/g/grandfather was Richard Monks, born in 1834. His father was also Richard Monks. Having searched the church records, I know he married Helen Keogh in 1831 in Dublin, but no more.
-
I have checked the voting registers of Dublin in the 1830's.
Richard Monks is listed as living in Old Kilmanham and as a Farmer.
There are a couple of other Monks also on the list.
Thomas
Denis
Joseph
Laurence
Patrick
William.
If you want any further info please give me a shout
In the 1851 census of Dublin there are also a few Richard Monks
Rich. Monk 34 Vicar St. St. Catherine's South
Rich. Monk 12 Engine Alley St. Catherine's South
Rich. Monks 15 Ship St. Great St. Bridget's South
Rich Monks 8 Clanbrassil St. St. Nicholas Without South

Interested in your post as my name is also Monks and very involved in family tree at moment. My grandfathe Richard was born in 1876 to what I am 90% certain were parents Patrick and Mary Monks (nee Mary Nolan). Cannot find birth cert for gandfather nor marriage cert for g/grandparents so am now turning to church records. Would you mind indicating what church records you managed to access please ?
-
4 children of Patrick Monks and Mary Nolan listed in IGI (www.familysearch.org)-
1. Sarah Monks born 16 Oct.1864 Dublin, Co. Dublin
2. Patrick born 1 Nov.1866 Dublin, Co. Dublin (page 618 in civil register)
3. William Monks born 28 Oct.1868 Dublin, Co. Dublin
4. Christopher born 7 Jan.1871 Co. Dublin

Not sure if I should feel happy at your info or deflated. I have a birth cert for a Thomas Monks born to Patrick Monks and Mary Nolan in 1876 and I have a marriage cert for Richard Monks dated 1899 showing a Thomas Monks as Bestman so I am assuming its the same Thomas who was born in 1876. Richard at marriage was 25 years old so makes him born in 1874, two years before Thomas. You have 4 births so am now puzzled as to why records you accessed did not show further births if any of course. If a connection can be made between the 4 births and Richard + Thomas you have opened up a whole new side to family tree and I thank you
-
IGI has some, not all, Irish births 1864-c1882.
Have you searched for Richard Monks' birth in civil index?
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=collectionDetails;t=searchable;c=1408347

Thanks a lot for link to that index, it has solved a problem with age given on G/fathers marriage cert.
Interested if the 1830's voter register and 1851 Dublin Census you have mentioned in posts is available to general public to browse
Just noticed a gap of 2 years in 1860's and 4 years in 1870's when g/grandparents didnt have children. Will have to find out why !
Thanks again for your great help

BrendanM - do you know where in Dublin (city or county) Richard and family were from ?

sangal - except for a few people with dual addresses (e.g. separate home and business) I dont believe that Shaw's directory covers areas outside Dublin city like Clondalkin.
Do you know occupation/trade/business for any of your Monks ancestors ? If so it may be possible to locate them in a Thom's directory.
The Dublin 1851 census mentioned earlier also only covers the city area (roughly the area between the two Canals) and this is available (for a fee) on OriginsNetwork
Is this the Monks family you are researching : Hamilton / Monks household - Bushelloaf, Clondalkin (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Clondalkin/Bushelloaf/38612/) ?

Yes Shane it is that Thomas Monk I am tracing . His father is listed as Patrick and mother Mary.
Myself and another roots chatter marpat think he has a brother Richard.

My g/grandmother was Catherine(Kate) Monks. She married Joseph Mullen on 9 Aug 1875. Her address was 19 High St., Dublin. Her parents were Richard Monks and Anne ? He was born Sep 1834 - baptised 16 Sep in St. Andrews Ch. Dublin.
Siblings - Catherine, Rosanna, Joseph and Mary Jane.
His father was also Richard Monks, and he married Ellen Keogh on 14 Feb 1831 in St. Andrews Ch. Dublin.
I have checked al Monks on 1851 Dublin Census and Griffiths Val. but cant be sure of any being related.
I located the following cert.s but cant be sure of these either
Richard Monk -Death -20 Jul 1904 -age 91 -Dublin (This must be the one on 1830 Voting Reg. Farmer, Kilmainham, although on Death Cert. he is listed as Printer.)
Mary Anne Monks -Death -19 Mar 1865 -age 85 or 35 -Dublin
Ellen Monks -Death -5 Jul 1869 -age 70 -Dublin
Jane Monaghan or Monks (it is written like this) -Birth -15 Dec 1864 -17 Kilmainham -Father Thomas Monaghan or Monks -Mother Mary Daly. Informant is her mother, also Mary Daly.
Maybe one or some of you may recognise some of these and see a connection with there own ancestors.

I had a look at that census form and see that there is some additional birth location information listed for some of the children that might be useful in tracing where the family lived :
Patrick Monks 11 - Fox & Geese
Jula Monks 5 - Blue bell
Eileen 1 – Inchicore
One strange detail about the return is that Thomas relationship status is listed as 'Boarder Son in law' - which would suggest that Margaret's maiden name is Hamilton ?

Margaret was a Forde her mother remarried.James Hamilton was her Mothers second husband .The first Husband was John Forde.
-
BrendanM
My eye caught your remarkre Monks?Monahan
On 13-6-1863 The Irish Times reported the bankruptcy of Christopher Monahan and John Monahan (Grocers) trading as J.Monaghan & Co. (note the G in Monaghan). Thoms gives the street No. as 3.
In my source work based on the Irish Times there are no entries for Monks/Monaghan at No.19 but the Police Court Section on Page3 of the edition of 15-7-1887 shows that a Miss Margaret Monks was charged with disturbing a congregation.(no street no. given).
Some help or does the plot merely thicken?

As someone who has spent a lifetime asking people to add the "e" on to the end of his name, it's always nice to see some of the other Fordes out there!
- John Forde

Hello John Forde
Yes Forde with an E. Actually as I was tracing our family tree it was amazing the amount of times that the name was incorrectly spelt over the years?
Are your Family from Dublin ?any relation ? I wonder?

Ambyrne - I saw your post below from a while back and was wondering if you might also have any information/records on a James Moncks/Monk/Monks/Monck from Dublin (born ~1797-1801), who married an Elizabeth (born ~1810). They had at least one child, Mary E. Moncks/Monk/Monks/Monck (born ~1824 in Dublin). That's as far back as I can go on that family name. Thank you in advance if you can help!!

Ambryne - PS on James/Elizabeth Monks/Moncks/etc -- they emigrated to London, England on or before 1861 since they show up in the England census that year. I do know James was a tailor as well.
