Title: Cardwell's of Dromore/Dromara
Post by: aljepeka on Saturday 19 December 09 01:53 GMT (UK)
Hi All,

I have hit a BRICK WALL!!!!

I am trying to find info on a family named Cardwell from the Dromore/Dromara area.

The Husband is Robert Cardwell, Wife Unknown.
They had the following children:

Margaret Ann C1835 married to Adam Black
William John B 1839(bapt 1st Dromore Presbyterian)
Samuel B 1842 married Agnes Black
Eliza jane B1844 married to Thomas Hamilton
Robert     married Eliza Craig
Mary Ellen B 1854 married Michael Corbett/Corbitt

I am descended from William John and as luck would have it he is the only one who I can not get any info on!!!!!!

I do not have a birth date or a marriage date.

If anyone can help I would really appreciate it and also with the name of the mother .

Thanking you,

Aljepeka

Hello,

If you go to the Ros Davies site their are several Cardwell's of Dromore listed.  Also Emerald Ancestors has Cardwells.

Hi Americangirl,

Thanks so much for the reply, but unfortunately this is a real BRICK WALL!!!
I am hoping some rootschatter has access to sources I don't .   I have been researching this family, periodically as time permits, for quite a few years.  I have a subscription to Emerald and also The Ulster Historical foundation and I think I know most of the sites online which give access to records.   I have checked (not entirely)  school records and church records of some of the neighbouring schools and have found answers to some of my queries but the stumbling blocks are :

Who did William John Cardwell marry and when??Who were his children?

Who did Robert marry?

Thanks again for your input.
Regards,
Aljepeka

Hi Sam,

Yes, I have . Again I am afraid no joy as to these specific queries :(.

Some day though when I am on another quest maybe I will turn up some info.

William John I do know had a son , my great grandfather, also called William John. This William John married a lady by the name of Sarah Moreland.  I have the details of their marriage(Banbridge Registrars) and also of his death in 1925.  He was born C1860-62 .  At the time of his death his religion was Plymouth brethren.  This may account a bit for no available records but I think at the time he was born his family were either presbyterian or C of I.

Back to the drawing board for another while!!!!

Regards,
Aljepeka

Hi Bob,

Yes, I've been there , done that for several years now lol :), but still not the correct family and when it is the correct family it does not answer the queries above.  I think my only chance is to find something in a church record.
Tradition tends for the groom to marry in the brides church- in that era they normally married someone within the vicinity/neighbourhood- but my William John may be an exception to the rule perhaps he married someone not local to the area.

Thanks all the same  :),

Hi Bob,

I have the family of William Cardwell and Margaret Chambers pretty well documented and have even saw extracts from their family bible.  Yes, this family would be a connection but is not the family I am after.  It too as you say has a William John. But if this were  the man I was after it would have made him quite young to have fathered my Great Grandfather . Also older family members recall Mary Ellen(younger sister of William John born 1839) visiting with them.

It is, as many who are researching their trees find  .... that the same christian names run in so many of the families which  makes for confusing deciphering of info.

While searching for my Cardwell tree I have come across several different spellings of the surname. One of which is Cardle which is how my own Great Aunt (who was Cardwell by birth) pronounced it.

Also in the Griffiths valuation the family were misrecorded as Carroll (Drummiller Townland).
I Have used the 'ask about ireland 'site to pinpoint  their location at this time and have explored the area. :)

Thanks again Bob for your input.

What was Miss Moreland's father's name?  Perhaps we can find some info through that.

Hi RosemaryJoan,

Sarah's  Father was Henry Moreland and her mother was Harriet Gamble.  I have info on both of their families.  Henrys father did not share his surname?? It was McCandless.
I was told once (I don't know how accurate it is) that there are 4 pages missing from one of the dromore churches records in Proni...so maybe , knowing my luck this is where the answers to my question lies .

Hi Crowlie,

I have noticed this Robert Cardwell before and if I recall he DID have a son by the name of William but there is a bit of a distance between Loughgall and Drumiller in Dromore...maybe it is worth investigating although I know at the time of William C1860 and Sarah Morelands marriage they were living in Dromore.

Also the Loughgall Cardwells are linked to the Annaghmore and Dungannon Cardwells.. I noticed this when doing a gravestone search and the info on it linked the two.

Thank you both for the input....Hope you both had a lovely Christmas :)

Hi Lily/Cardwell,

I can post you the info re  your Chambers/Cardwell connection via pm ( ie the personal messaging) but I think you need at least three postings on this site before you can use it- as you have two postings already just reply to this one and that will make the three :).  It will be late this evening before I get back online again.   Looking forward to corresponding.
I also have a few email addresses of other descendants of William And Margaret too.
 Talk very soon,

I don't recognise the name Cardwell, but there are plenty of Corbetts in the area still, so it may be worth you altering course and researching via Corbett to break your brick wall

http://www.igp-web.com/down/Dromara_1886.htm
http://www.lisburn.com/archives/info/news-2009/installations-at-waringsford.html Waringford is a hamlet at the bottom of Aughnaskeagh Road.....they will all know where any Cardwells or Corbetts are now

Aughnaskeagh is about 5 mile from Dromore and 3 miles from Dromara, right in the middle...I bought a flax millers cottage in 2004 and on the deeds a Corbett built it, the old water wheel is still there next to the Lagan and Corbetts owned the Flax Mill , the other side of the water at Aughnaskeagh House lives a Corbett (next door neighbours brother)  who was a Corbett, I do  know she was researching the family history as I  helped her get started so if you are interested let me know.... I am on the mainland for a couple of years otherwise it would be some door knocking...hope that gives you something to work on.....

Hi There,
Thanks for replying.  Good to know there are still plenty of Corbetts in the area :-).  There are a few Cardwells still in the area but not in great number.  I am pretty familiar with the area as I only live about 15 mile away (near Portadown/Lurgan).  My Cardwell who married a Corbett did not have any children. However, she is the only sibling of my GGrandfather  that my Dad, Aunts etc. remember.
So it may be a long shot but still worth a try.

Thanks for your help.
