Title: Joseph Whitton from Tandragee
Post by: icini on Tuesday 14 August 07 23:28 BST (UK)
Hello: Am interested in information on Joseph Whitton(en) son of Joseph Whitton and Elizabeth Greenaway. Joseph was born about 1857 in Tandragee, near Port-a-Down Armagh.  he and brother Thomas left and resided in Glasgow for a while. Thomas settled in Newcastle. After marrying Jane Martin in St. Silas Church,  Joseph deserted her in the 1890s and went to Newcastle.

Does anyone know or have information on his family. I know what happened to him after but am anxious to go backward to see if I can find anything about his parents.   thank you.  Donna

Hello icini,

What denomination were your Whitton (en) and Greenaway ancestors?

The 1861 directory on the Lennon Wylie website shows ...

George Whitten, spirit dealer, Market Street, Tandragee.

Hello and thank you for your reply.  Poorhouse documents list them as Protestants. St Silas church in Glasgow is the Episcopal Church of England.  I thought they might have been transplanted English because of the move to Newcastle. First the brother and his family , then Joseph.   Donna

If Joseph got married in Scotland does his marriage certificate not contain any helpful family details?

Hello: yes it gives his parents; Joseph Whitten and Eliza Greenaway. I know how difficult Irish research is and was just hoping that someone out there had some knowledge of the family or how to go about getting more information. On census returns all it said was birthplace Ireland. It was the poorhouse application that gave actual towns.  Probably I have gone as far as able with this branch and should move on. Thanks anyway.   Donna

hello: Have narrowed place of birth for Joseph Whitten , son of Joseph Whitten and Eliza Greenaway ; he was born 1857/59 in Tandragee. I went on a " history from headstones" website and there were Whittens in this town but I only looked at one and it was too far back. Joseph moved to Glasgow and married Jane Martin Irvine  from Armagh.

If any one knows where else I can post or search I would appreciate it.  Thanks. Donna

A John Whitten emigrated to Australia on the "Cambodia" arriving March 1852 age 21. in Melbourne.
He married Margaret Harvey in 1853 who also emigrated on the "Cambodia"  at the same time.
Marriage reg. 559

It is understood they came from the same area- Tandragee - with William Pentland and John Tully.
Perhaps this helps in your research.
