Title: How do I find my great-aunts grave - scotland
Post by: egar on Wednesday 29 April 09 12:48 BST (UK)
Hi All.  New to this but making fabulous headway in my family search.  We have discovered that our Great Aunt Agnes Young (who we didn't know existed) was murdered (yup) on 1st July 1929 at 48 Gallowgate in Glasgow.  An insane sailor called David Petfield from Aberdeen shot her in the head.  Wrong place at the wrong time.  Anyway, it will be 80 years this year and we'd like to try to find out where she is buried.  I've tried the Mitchell Library who can't find any records - does anyone else know where I can search.  There was no line after Agnes so it seems really sad that she's all alone somewhere and we'd like to go and put down some flowers but have hit a 'dead end' here.  Any thoughts or suggestions - I'm running out of time till 1st July.  Many thanks, hope you are all well, Eva

Hi Eva,
A warm welcome to Rootschat.
Once you have posted 3 times you will be able to send pm,s Personel messeges to fellow rootschatters.
Avoid posting your e-mail details to avoid spammers and no posting on living relatives.
Firstly I think we need to get your posting into the Lanarkshire page.
I am not quite sure how to do this we may need the help of one of the Rootschat moderator,s to do this, who by the way do a fantastic Job!
The second step is to contact Glasgow council,s dept of Cemeteries and cremetoria Register.
20 Trongate,Glasgow G1 5ES, tel 0141/ 287/ 3961.
email= land@glasgow.gov.uk
You have the details it should be fairly easy to find the burial records and possible gravestone  of your great Aunt Agnes.
Good luck,
Billy
ps, I have just asked the Moderator to move the post.

Hi Eva,

You may have seen this, but there was a story in the Scotsman newspaper on 2 July 1929 [page 9],  It's certainly a sad story and it does seem that she was unfortunate in just being in the wrong place.

It doesn't give details of her burial, as it's too soon after the event.

Best wishes

Rockford

Possibly could have been cremated at the Western Necropolis. They will check the register if you call and give any details you have regarding name and date.

We hopefully will get it sorted before July,

Hi Billy - thought I was getting somewhere - have phoned lots of folks and only the Crematorian Society could tell me she definately wasn't cremated.  Glasgow Council says they will search which will be at a cost of £12.36 per half hour - am willing to pay but thought before I forked out more money I'd post a look up request.  Actually  think I may have subsidised all the councils in scotland for family research over the last six months.  Everyone has been very helpful but basically keep getting sent to the Mitchell Library.  Do you think it's best to just give them more money - would that be an easier route - don't want to cause anyone any more work than they need.  It's Agnes Young died at 48 Gallowgate in Glasgow on 1st July 1929 (murdered by an insane seaman).  Her residential address was 116 Drygate, Glasgow.  Unfortunately I wouldn't know one area of Glasgow from another so have no idea what cemetaries are in the area.  All advise welcome.  I think I've pretty much hit panic mode since we're getting so close and I can't get any time off work before july to get the the Library myself.  Eva

Hello Eva,

The 2 closest cemeteries would be either The Necropolis, right beside Drygate or possibly Janefield (The Eastern Necropolis, on the Gallowgate.

If you have a look on Multimap, choose the aerial view, and key in NS604652, that'll show you how close Drygate & the Necropolis is.

NS619642 is the reference for Janefield, no more than five minutes along the road on the Gallowgate.

Anne

Hiya  -  sorry - been otherwise engaged i.e. working all hours - her parents at the time of her death stayed in Bell Street?  Just to let you all know I got the picture - she looks so lovely, fresh faced and a nice genuine person.  Have been speaking with one of the Petfield relations and discovered Douglas (in the nicest possible way - her murderer) and he died in 1979 in Morningside.  have found out quite a bit more about him and he seems to have had a terribly sad life before my g-a-agnes and spent the remaining 50 years in an asylum institution.  Eva

Dear Eva,
Hello, your posts popped up when I was searching so have signed up.

Please forgive any intrusion but I wondered if you had tracked down Agnes Young’s last resting place since your last post? – I know it was a long time back, some years now. It’s an incredibly long shot but my family have been trying to trace an Agnes of our own for 10 yrs to no avail and I wonder whether she may have changed her name (due to some skeletons we think)– there is no record of her death etc anywhere and she disappears from the record in the early 1920’s (was born Falkirk). Every attempt to trace her has failed. Many of the details match the account of your Agnes such as similar age range, likely whereabouts and so on and little available info on her early life – I just wondered whether was a chance they might just be one and the same? – long shot I know…..
I wondered if you might have a picture I might look at? - I'd be so very grateful if . The Agnes I am looking for is my Great-Grandmother and my Mother has tried so hard to find her and just kept hitting a wall.

All the best, Kate
