Title: Simmons family londons east end
Post by: wayne1041 on Monday 14 December 09 19:17 GMT (UK)
Hi all being new to all this I stared well but have now hit a brick wall. What I can not find is any info relating to a Alfred Arthur Simmons bn @1848 in the Stepheny area of london.
On the 25th July 1850 in St George East he married a jemima Michell bn 12.3.1851.
Alf may have had a father by the name of James but that could be another Simmons.
Where would I look for the married certificate for Alf and jemima an where is St George East? etc.
many thanks
wayne

Hmmm, on first glance, the only Alfred Simmons marrying Jemima Michell took place on July 25th 1870.   :-\ Alfred's middle name is given as Amos though.

Alfred was resident at 1 Princes Sq, and his father was James Simmons (publican)

It looks as if Alfred and Jemima baptised 2 children on 20th Sept 1876: Amos William and Jemima Jane.  Address given as 11 Bromley St, Alfred's occupation is Seaman and the church is St MIchael and All Angels, Bromley.

Jemima and these two children (7 and 5) were still at 11 Bromley St in 1881 (husband presumably away at sea): RG11/501/53/34.

I wonder if it is Jemima's mum and brother living in the same building but separate household (surname Michell)

if he was born in stepney or near there
i can only find 3 between 1840-1850 none have amos down as middle name
1/ birth regd in stepney 1844
2/ birth regd in stepney in 1846
3/ birth regd in whitechapel 1849

the nearest one would be the 1849 one but i have found a baptism in 1849 in the right month and right area and his father was david simmons so probably not him
that leaves the other 2 but they would seem to be a bit early?

have not had a look at censuses for alfred
have to go to work shortly so will have a look to-morrow if no one does in the meantime

Hi,

Assuming the couple Spidermonkey found on the 1871 are correct, there is a possible birth for Alfred Simmons - Q2 1848, Brighton, v7 pg313

Wayne, you could order this cert from the GRO, but specify that you only want it if father's name is James.  That way, you do still have to pay a checking fee (?£4) but not the full price of £7 if it is the wrong cert.  This cert should have Alfred's full birth date on
