Title: LAUGHLAN of Drumachose, Derry
Post by: joody_anne on Saturday 12 December 09 08:06 GMT (UK)
I have a William Laughlan & Jane Stewart supposedly married c. 1826 in Ireland.

Their first son, also William Laughlan (actually he may not be the first son, I dont know of any other kids) William was born in Drumachose, Derry. on 15th April 1827.

Can anyone find the marriage of William Laughland & Jane Stewart please?  And any other children of that marriage?

I have had Laughlan spelt Laughland - even Lanchline - which makes things a bit difficult.

Hi
I have sighted your information on the IGI and noticed that a Catherine Laughlin (sic) was christened on 15 Apr 1814 in Drumachose. It states that her parents were William Laughlin and Jane ? (extracted information). Unfortunately no maiden name was given but it is possible that the marriage was much earlier especially as the marriage submitter did not seem sure of a marriage date.

Regards

Thanks Kingskerswell.  That information sounds good - even tho there is a difference between one birth (Catherine 1814) and the other (William 1827) - 13 years.

Interestingly this William (the one born in 1827) went on to have (among other children) - a daughter whom he called Catherine.

I appreciate your help.

The William Laughlan (born 1827) in IGI is from a submitted record so the date or parents' names might not be accurate. Another submitted record there gives William (father) born c1801, married c1826 Jane Stewart born c1805 (it is quite common for IGI submitted records to have bride as 4 years younger than husband and married at age 21- not sure if this is to do with their software but often not correct or unable to be proven by existing records). In this case you will need to check the actual church records to determine what information might be available.

LDS have microfilmed many church records- which you can order from your local LDS library for a small fee to be viewed there.
Drumachose Presbyterian Church have baptisms starting in 1837 but Drumachose Church of Ireland baptisms for 1729-1752, 1804-1832 still exist and have been filmed (although the copying was done years ago and parts can be difficult to read). See www.familysearch.org to check their catalogue.

Hey Siledee - that could well be one of his brothers - I can't see why not.   The particular William and Jane in question had another son William b. 15th Apr 1827 born there.

Funnily enough by the time my grandfather arrived in Australia, he was calling himself Lochlin, which was my maiden name.    Many a time, people misspelt it as Locklin.

ps - was that in Drumachose, Derry?

Thanks Siledee!

Yes, it was in Drumachose. You'll find it on the familysearch.org site mentioned by Aghadowey in a post above.

Drumachose baptismal register contain only two children to a Wm & Jane Loughlin before 1830:

Catharine dau of Wm & Jane Laughlin Parish of Ballykelly Jan'y 24 1814

Robert son of Wm & Jane Lochlin, Broglasco, T. Finlagan Feb'y 5th 1823

The address given is Broglasco in Tamlaght Finalagan parish sometimes called Ballykelly parish. Ballykelly is a village 2 miles from Limavady. I would also check the registers for Ballykelly Church of Ireland which go back to 1798.

I also did an advanced search in the Derry genealogy database for Tamlaght Finlagan parish church

http://derry.rootsireland.ie/quis.php?searchType=adv

I found one match for a baptism of a child namely John to parents William & Jane Loughlin dated to 1820. There did not appear to be any other children baptised to parents Wm & Jane. I used Loughlin in the surname search.

Thank you so much.   I have found the name to be spelt so many different ways - even MacLag - Lachlan, Laughland.   It could be a difficult one.
