Title: TAYLOR George RICHARDSON Mary Ann Hindmarsh SA
Post by: Kiwitaylor on Saturday 12 December 09 00:06 GMT (UK)
I only have Hannah Taylor b 16/08/1874 at Hindmarsh and Fred (not Fredrick) b 28/09/1881 (registered 14/10/1881) at New Thebarton, Hindmarsh, South Australia. The parents are George Taylor an Engineer and Mary Ann Richardson. I have nothing more on Hannah, George or Mary Ann - don't know if they came from England or where-ever. I am unsure if there were any other children.  I have no marriage or deaths for any in Australia. Fred came to NZ when he was about 17-19 (1898-90). I have everything on Fred once he married in NZ - he is my husbands Grandfather. I do know that around 1915-20 George & Mary Ann were still in South Australia wanting to come to NZ but Fred's wife sent the mail back return to sender. Family lost contact after that.

Hi Kiwitaylor,

A Big Welcome to RootsChat.  ;D

I don't see any further births to this couple, nor do they appear to have married in SA. I do however note the arrival on the 10 May 1874 aboard the  HESPERUS

TAYLOR George
TAYLOR Mary A
TAYLOR George
TAYLOR William

Of course with such a common name there may be others.

Cheers Kris

Hi Kris
The children George & William have poped up a couple of times - they both died WW1. But I don't have their births, to show mothers maiden name. On the AIF records it showed both born in SA - George in Hindmarsh. I have a feeling they may not be Mary Ann (nee Richardson) there were so many George Taylor's married to a Mary Ann.
We were told that there were two sisters of Fred but I can't find them. I don't even know where George Taylor & Mary Ann Richardson married or died.
Many thanks. 8)
Cheers

Hi Kris
The death of George is the birth era but I think ours died in early 1900's.
The marriages for George & William would make them born 1860's they may be too old as Hannah was b 1874 and Fred b 1881.
I will keep all this just in case though. ???
What a great start, many thanks

Sons in WW1 - William was single age 26 died June 1916, George m. Cecilia Alice MC LOUGHLIN 1911 in Perth was age 32 died Dec 1916.

So probably different George & William again to yours. Never thought it would be easy !!!

All this certainly makes you interested.

Hi Kiwi,

Sorry for the delay - I am able to do a more comprehensive search tonight.  ;)

TAYLOR George was buried 26 Jun 1910 at Hindmarsh - He was aged 71 years. Residence Coglin Street. Plot H54
TAYLOR Mary Ann was buried 3 Aug 1917 at Hindmarsh. She was aged 80 years. Residence Coglin Street. Plot H54
No monuments.

DEATHS

TAYLOR George died 24 Jun 1910 Hospital Adelaide Dist Ade 349 458. He was aged 70, married residence Brompton. Relative G TAYLOR (Son)

TAYLOR Mary Ann died 2 Aug 1917 Hospital Magill Dist Nor 412 3. She was aged 79, a widow, residence Brompton Park. Relative George TAYLOR deceased husband.

Looks very promising that they are indeed the family arriving in 1874 aboard the HESPERUS Mary Ann of an age to have had all 4 children. I will check the passenger list when next at the library.

Not sure about outward passenger lists for that era. There is an index for earlier outwards but only newspaper entries so not very detailed. Alas the index does not go cover this period. Will see what I can find out.

Cheers Kris  :)

Hi Kris  ;D ;D
I can't thank you enough. You have TOTALLY blown me away, what a lot of info. It has started a whole lot of more questions.
Was there any mention of George (Snr) parents on his marriage or death cert? What was his occupation on death cert, on Fred's birth it stated Engineer.
Have you found anything about Hannah b. 1874 Hindmarsh, did she marry and have children? Did Elizabeth & Fredrick or William & Emily have children? What happend to son George, I see he was mentioned on his fathers death record?
WOW all this ties into the little bit of conversation within the NZ family over Fred's past. Just hope we can find Fred coming to NZ now.
Thank you so much Kris - what a great Chrissy present for the family.
Thank you
Kiwi

You are very welcome Kiwi,

Glad to help. Sorry the delay. It has been a hard week, but with a little quiet time last night I got stuck in.

Sorry only the certs can answer your questions, although SA certs are quite expensive and provide little more than our excellent indexes.

Information on SA certificates.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=368744.0

Alas father will not be named on death cert. Marriage cert he will be named. You can purchase this from.

Engineer seems a long way from Woolllen Cleaner.  :-\

I could find no further sightings of Hannah or Alfred in SA.

Wondering if Fred may have travellerd bith big brother perhaps?

Hi Kris,
To my knowledge Fred was the only member to come to NZ, there was never any mention of siblings in NZ, the shipping records will hopefully enlighten us when found. Fred & Ada only mentioned Fred having two sisters - in Fred's eyes they were very intelligent, giving the impression they were younger than Fred but obviously they were in fact older.
Thank you so much for all the help. A great find including Fred's siblings children. That area was mentioned on Fred's birth certificate. Were you able to find Fred in the family anywhere from your searches, birth cert page 333 Book 272 District of Hindmarsh, SA.

There are no records that I can think which will show the family group.

I cannot see any mention of George TAYLOR an engineer in anything I can access

1903 PO Directory

these seem to fit with the births of George and William's children.

TAYLOR George - Railway Terrace Wolseley
TAYLOR William - Labourer - Murray St West Thebarton

George and Mary Ann's know address at death was Coglin St. Interestingly there is a Richard H TAYLOR an Engineer in the street.

I think you will find these are the children of George TAYLOR and Mary LYSAGHT so suspect the directory entry is them also. (Railway Terrace) Trouble with such common names

and others born in the area

They married in 1880, aged 24 - his father Alfred. In 1898, aged 40 he married her sister Jane.

I did have his death as George (Agnes husband) till I noted he was 10 years too old.  ;)

Hello
Have just come across these posts for Taylor and Richardson as I am helping my husband with research into his Taylor Family.
His grandfather was George Taylor born 6th May 1892 in Hindmarsh South Australia, son of George Taylor and Agnes McGregor.
George Taylor my husband's grandfather married Louisa Bertha (Gertrude) Tannebring on the 6th April 1914 in South Australia.  Their son Kenneth Frank Taylor was my husband's father!

The George and Mary Ann who migrated on the Hesperus with their children, who were wool cleaners and weavers as shown in the English Census documents of 1861 and 1871 are NOT the parents of Fred...they lived in Birmingham according to the 1871 Census with Fred aged 3 and two lodgers.

I am seeking more information about George and Mary Ann, parents of Alfred, Elizabeth, William and George.  Particularly George (Jr) who married Agnes McGregor and went on to have nine children (by my records!).
Many thanks.

Thank you for your post josee1.

I have Fred Taylor born 1881 Hindmarsh Adelaide South Australia to George and Mary Ann (nee RICHARDSON) Taylor - as shown on Fred's birth certificate which I have.

I agree George & Mary Ann who migrated on the Hesperus are not the parents of the Fred Taylor aged 3 in 1871 census at Birmingham - a bit before our Fred was born.

I have George & Mary Ann (nee Richardson) Taylor's marriage certificate and who their fathers were. I also have the census records for both families up to departure to Australia, showing the 4 children who were born in Yorkshire UK.

Many Thanks

Thank you  :)
That clarifies things a bit.  It is all very complicated... the repetition of names and crossover of dates has confused me no-end.
So I have George Taylor (1840-1910) son of Charles Taylor (1817-?) and Ann (1816-?) and Mary Ann Richardson (1838-1917) daughter of James Richardson (1812-?) and Hannah (1813-?).  Does that line up with what you have?
Of their children, I am most interested in George (1867-1941) and Agnes McGregor (1867-1930) and their children.  They would be my great, great grandparents.  So I really want to confirm that I have the right line of George Taylors.
Any information you can share would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Josee

Hi,
Thanks!  I will change the dates I have for your George... he would be the older brother of Eva Marjorie   :D
Eva died in 1942 from an illness and her son (my grandfather) was raised by the youngest sister, Dorothy Mavis.
...making Kenneth Frank the cousin of my grandfather!
It is very exciting when pieces of the puzzle come together  :)

Yes Josee that is the same George & Mary Ann - exactly the same dates & names I have. It was a common combination - there were so many George and Mary Ann Taylor's but thankfully our's used (nee Richardson) on most documents.

They had the four children Alfred, Elizabeth, William and George born in UK then also Hannah b. 16 Aug 1874 and Fred 28 Sept 1881 (both born Adelaide).

Fred was my husbands Grandfather.
We have very little of the distant relatives in Australia, Fred's siblings children/family - it would be great to make contact with some others. I am happy to share what I have and hopefully you have some of what I am missing.  ;)

I see 'radrian' has replied to you so that is good you two can get acquainted - both from the same line, George & Agnes (McGregor).

Hi,
Thank you for posting.  I had no information about the children of Allan and Jean.
I do have my grandfather's diaries from the early 1940's with references to Auntie Jean and Uncle Allan.  Jean died just two days after her sister (my grandfather's mother) and Uncle Allan is mentioned as looking after my then-twelve-year old grandfather.
I have the children of George Taylor and Agnes (McGregor) as:
Catherine Dryborough Taylor B1888 D1968
Agnes Ann Taylor B1890 D1980
George Taylor B1892 D1951
James McGregor Taylor B1894 D1953
Violet Elizabeth Ellen Taylor B1899 D1994
Hector Gordon Taylor B1901 D1975
Eva Marjorie Taylor B 1905 D1942 (this is my line)
Gladys Jean Taylor B1908 D1942
Dorothy Mavis Taylor B1911 D1996

George and Agnes (parents) and Eva share a plot at Cheltenham Cemetery Section: Section CX Drive: A Path (#): 10(21) Site Number: 279N.  As with the other family members, the plot is unmarked.
Jean and Eva both died of TB (we think).

I have never found any photographs of any family members - this is the ultimate aim for me now.

Let me know if you want to share more!
Cheers, Jo
