Hello
My husbands ancestors are from Lancashire mainly around the Rivington - Chorley area.
The family are shown living at Gills Farm, Rivington early in the 19th century.
Is anyone able to help with information about Gills Farm and also the surnames, Bain, Yates and Taylor.
We are in Australia and coming to the UK in Aug 2010 so are trying to do as much planning as we can before coming over.
Any help is very much appreciated
Regards

Hi Lynne
Gills Farm is listed in 1861 but not in 1871. The Rivington Reservoir was built in the 1860s, and at the end of the 1871 census it states that Liverpool Corporation owned 273 acres unlet. So Gills Farm could be under the reservoir. You could contact the Lancashire Record office and see if they can supply you with a OS map of Rivington prior to the flooding of the valley.
Or find the address of the library in Rivington in case they may have some information.

Hi Again
I have found Gills Farm on an OS map. It says 1849 but that must be when it was first surveyed as the Reservoir is shown. The scale is six inches equals one mile. You should be able to match the lanes with modern roads. They tend not to change, especially in hilly country.
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/mapsheet.aspx?compid=55125&sheetid=4722&ox=1496&oy=449&zm=1&czm=1&x=393&y=289
Alice may have been a tenant farmer. I don't know the law regarding the leasing of land, but for houses it was usual for the agreement to allow one change in leasee. Alice may have been the second after her husband died, so if she died or became unable to farm the land, the lease may have been terminated. The 1871 census also mentions unlet land owned by the Marquis (Marquess) of Rothwell. They were big landowners in Lancashire, so it would not surprise me if he was the actual owner of the farm.
If you can find the modern M. of Rothwell they might have an archive or estates office who may have information.
There is a farm in Lever Park, just off Rivington Lane that looks to be in the right place.

Thankyou so much for the information Ken. We are getting quite excited and looking forward to our trip.

Have you put 'Rivington Reservoir' into Google? It will bring up information about the area and pics, though not necessarily anything about Gill's Farm.

They held the cycling road races around Rivington in the 2002 Commonweath Games at Manchester. They would have cycled down Rivington Lane.

Hi Lee, Hope you don't mind me butting in, but I am interested to know if the house you mentioned is the one just below Rivington Pike. I come from Chorley but live in Australia now, but on my last visit 10 years ago I saw a big posh house just below the pike.

Hi Lee
- Isaac Bain was born about 1806 at Rivington to John Bain and mary Taylor
- Isaac married Alice Yates on 5 Oct 1835 at Bolton-Le-Moors. Alice was born about 1808 in Rivington however I dont know who her parents were
- The 1841 & 1851 census shows Isaac and Alice living at Gills Farm
- By 1861 Isaac had passed away and Alice is shown as a widow and farmer living at Gills Farm
- In 1871 Alice is shown living with her brother at Charnock Heath. I'm in the process of trying to find out who was at Gills Farm in 1871.
- Any help you can give is very much appreciated.
regards

Hi Lynne,
Isaac Bain is buried with Alice at Rivington Church and they have a gravestone:
In Memory of
Isaac Bain of Rivington
Who died February 19th 1861 Aged 55 years
He was for a many years the
Respected sexton of this place
Also Alice his beloved wife
Who died May 12th 1888 Aged 80 years
Let me know if you want me to check my database (of gravestones, births, burials) for other Bains/Banes, Taylors or Yates/Yeats. I do recall, and can check for you, that a couple of male Yates were the "purported fathers" of illegitimate children as they were all recorded in the church registers by Rev Sutcliffe who seemed to clamp down on illegitimacy.
No matter what, you simply must visit this delightful churchyard as there are many people of these names buried there. Gilsbrook House is still there and has recently been used as a children's care home.

Here's a likely John and Mary Bain, also at Rivington Church:
Three breadths
The property of John
Bane of Rivington
The above John Bain
Died March 1st 1834 Aged73 years
Mary his wife
Died January 15th 1840 Aged76 years
Will check the graveyard register to see who else is buried in these 3 plots.

Hi Lynne,
Just checked the graveyard register for Rivington Church for you. There is the 'burial' register and a 'graveyard' register. The graveyard register is split into plots, who owned the plot, who's buried there etc and can often give more info than the burial register.
So, with John and Mary Bane (see post above) we can confirm they lived at Gills and here are the others buried, but have no mention on the stone:
Nancy Bane 1st May 1797 (this would be the interred date)
Mary Bane 1st May 1797
Jane Bane 6th April 1798
Peggy Bane 17th Sept 1802 Aged 18
Isaac Bane 14th Jan 1802 Aged 10
Buried with Isaac and Alice in the next plot are:
Abraham son of John Bane 20th Jan 1803 Aged 2
Alice daughter of John Bane 27th Jan 1803 Aged 6 months
Jacob son of John Bane 10th May 1811
John son of John Bane 13th Feb 1814 Aged 1
Alice dau of John Bane 11th Jun 1839 Aged 25
James Bain 15th Mar 1846 Aged 1 and two thirds (No mention of parents for children below, probably grandchildren of John and Mary)
Esther Bain 25th Jun 1849 Aged 5 and half months
Isaac Bain 14th Jul 1849 Aged 10
James Bain 12th Feb 1854 Aged 1 and one quarter Halliwell (this is the abode)
Eleanor Bain 4th Jun 1854 Aged 71 Halliwell
Eliz. Julia 5th Nov 1854 Aged 1 Halliwell
Next plot number 3.
Betty Bain dau of Abraham 23rd May 1844 Aged 9 and half months
Judith Bain wife of Jacob - Mar 1860 Aged 48(? bit illegible)
Alice Bain dau of Abraham 27th Jun 1865 Aged 23
John Bain of Halliwell 11th May 1866 Aged 83
Sarah Alice Bain of Witton 3rd Mar 1872 Aged 6 and half
Levina Bain of Witton 27th March 1872 No age
Phew! Didn't they cram them in? Clearly they are all related and the plots were bought by John and Mary, so assuming they are the 'head' of the family then the rest are children, grandchildren or possibly other close relations.
There are quite a few other Bains, so let me know if you want me to check other names.
Enjoy!

Hi Tipps,
Thankyou so much for all that information. I really to appreciate your help. I have been able to 'fill in some of the blanks' which is really great.
I don't have any information on the Yeates/Yates or Taylor families other than John Bain married Mary Taylor abt 1782 and their son Isaac married Alice Yates abt 1835.
I would very much appreciate any information especially births/parents etc for Mary and Alice.
We're so excited about our trip in Aug and are in the process of looking to book accommodation in Rivington so we can spend a few days there.
Thanks again for your help
Regards

Hi Lynne,
I've done some more trawling for you. Alice Yates was baptised 28 Sep 1807 daughter of John. There are actually 2 couples called John and Ann Yates. So, we've established the link to the correct one through Alice living with her brother James in 1881, and the relation of the burial plots. 1841, 1851 (Yater on census) and 1861 John is living at Old Cates (Kates) with some of their children.
Here is his gravestone at Rivington Church:
Sacred to the Memory of
John Yates
Of Rivington
Who died December 3rd 1866
Aged 83 years
Also Ann his wife
Who died April 23rd 1847
Aged 62 years
Also Ann their daughter
Who died February 24th 1852
Aged 32 years
Also George their son
Who died March 19th 1827
Aged 1 week
Also Richard Yates
Who died December 17th 1873
Aged 63 years
Also Hugh Yates
Who died April 7th 1897
Aged 79 years
In Loving Memory of
Lillie beloved wife of John Sefton Berry
Who fell asleep January 20th 1939
Aged 49 years
Until we meet again
Also Leah Yates
Who died July 22nd 1861 Aged 2 days
John was baptised 18 Nov 1783 son of James.
Interestingly 2 plots away from the above gravestone is the grave of 3 James', but they have no stone. In the plot is :
James Yates of Rivington 28 Feb 1827 Aged 85 (interred date)
Nancy wife of Jas Yates 17 Feb 1834 Aged 32 (no stipulation as to which James she was married to!)
James Yates of Rivington 13 Feb 1836 Aged 27
James Yates of Rivington 22 Feb 1837 Aged 55
2 plots away from this one is:
In Memory
Of
John Yates who departed this life (This John could be Alice's brother or cousin)
January 20th 1886 Aged 70 years
Also Ann his wife who departed this
Life November 12th 1893 Aged 77 years
John son of John and Ann Yates
Who died January 2nd 1854 Aged 3 years
Also Thomas their son who died
December 31st 1871 Aged 25 years
Also Ann their daughter who died
June 12th 1874 Aged 21 years
The next plot has no stone, but holds:
John Yates Jnr. 1854 (I think this is the other John and Ann)
Ann Yates 7 Oct 1847 Aged 72
John Yates 7 Jan 1854 Aged 2 years 11 months
A few rows away is Alice's brother James:
In Loving Memoryof
James Yates
Who died March 20th 1889
Aged 74 years
Also Rachel Yates wife of the above
Who died May 31st 1863
Aged 41 years
Also Thomas Yates son of the above
Who died March 10th 1856
Aged 14 months
Also Alice Yates daughter of the above
Who died February 20th 1858
Aged 14 months
Also Sarah Yates daughter of the above
Who died May 12th 1861
Aged 9 years
Hope this is some help, I realise it's a lot to digest. Will look at Bains family next.

Not having as much success with the Bains family. I've found:
John Bain baptised Rivington Church 13 Jan 1760, son of John of Anderton.
John Bain (of Rivington) married Mary Taylor (of Rivington) 22 Dec 1782 at Rivington Church
Possible baptism: Mary Taylor baptised Lee Chapel, Horwich 17 Sep 1767 daughter of William (and possibly Ann), abode Rivington
I do have some gravestones for Taylors, but they would have been born c.1790's onwards. I'm not sure whether they are Mary's family, so I'll not bombard you with extra info until you're ready for the onslaught!
Let me know if there's anything else I can help you with.
